Just like with Brick, I disliked it the first time I saw it, but it grew on me the second viewing, and by the third... it was awesome. I don't like it as much as Mulholland Drive and The Elephant Man, but it definitely is a great, thought provoking movie. And I just love it when that guy lip synchs to "In Dreams"; so hilariously disturbing.

Alot of it has to do with the fact that Roy Orbison is fucking amazing and In Dreams is probably his greatest song. That's just one of those songs that takes you away to another place man.

Well, it's not the most pleasant song (keep in mind I never heard it before seeing the movie) and the guy singing it isn't the most pleasant lookin' fella’. Seriously, pretend you've never seen Blue Velvet and never heard that song. One night you’re at a bar and that exact same scenario happens... that shit wouldn't freak you out, man?

Laura Dern isn't 'conventionally' beautiful for 'Hollywood' standards, but yes... there is something about her. Like in Mask, for example, you can't help but find her attractive. And the same case goes for Blue Velvet.

Yeah I never would of thought the chick from Jurassic Park would've been so gorgeous only a few years before. I guess sticking your hand in giant dinosaur turd doesn't exactly scream "sexy" though.

Yeah I get what you're saying about the In Dreams scene, it is obviously off-putting in a surreal kind of way, but the first time I saw it I thought it was beautiful. Again, probably having to do with my absolute love for Roy Orbison and In Dreams being his best song. Orbison's music always gives an other-wordly kind of feel to films. Have you ever seen Gummo? Pretty awful and pretentious film, but the ending montage featuring Orbison's "Crying" over images of tornadoes ripping apart the Midwest is beautiful.

Actually not, even though I enjoyed Kids and even to a much lesser extent, Ken Park. I planned on seeing it eventually, but might not now.

And I have never known much about Roy Orbison. I remember asking my mom who he was when we went to see The Waterboy at the movie theater all those years ago, but never heard much of his stuff outside of In Dreams and the only reason I heard that of course was because of Blue Velvet.

Well if you're a fan of old school 50's rock or really just good music in general, check him out. Orbison's got a voice like no other in music history, and he's got tons of absolute classics. Here's a few songs, his music has got that perfect surreal quality that makes him seem like a musical partner-in-crime to Lynch.

Probably the most underrated of the first wave of rock singers, the man just oozed cool everywhere he went.


As for Gummo...it's worth a watch, but thats about it. Very pretentious and trying far too hard to be an art film. And for some reason there is just so much cat-killing in that movie. These kids must kill like a dozen cats through out the movie. Very weird and disturbing film, it has a few moments that are actually very good, but overall it's pretty much just a mess.

Those songs were pretty sweet. The guy's like a 1950's version of Bob Dylan, sort of. I actually have Only the Lonely on a mix cd somewhere, so I knew about that one, but never heard the other three. Thanks. I'm going to download some more of his stuff and see if there's anything else I dig.

And you mentioning cat killing really makes me not want to see it now. I'm a real big pussy when it comes to dogs and/or cats getting abused. I can watch someone getting decapitated on film (fake, mind you) all day long and not blink, but I cringe at just the sound of a dog's whelp, even if I know it’s not real. Weird how that is with me.

Same thing with me man, I've seen the most brutal gore against humans on film (Nacho Cerda's "Aftermath" anyone? Men Behind the Sun? (Jake knows that one) Probably only the most dedicated of horror fans have any idea of what I'm talking about) but the second an animal is getting hurt my stomach twists.

The cats are all clearly and obviously fake in Gummo, but two of the main characters in the film make money by hunting street cats and selling them to a butcher. It's not really gorey or anything, but there is one cat-drowning scene that is rough to watch if your an animal lover. Yeah, it's a really strange movie.

Glad you dug the Orbison songs, he really is an amazing artist who gets unfairly remembered soley for Pretty Woman and nothing else.

I've seen the Walter Salles film Behind the Sun, but I'm pretty sure that's not what you're talking about. And I never heard of Nacho Cerda or Aftermath. So those both must be really underground type shit, huh?

And yeah... I even hate to see horses get hit during War scenes. It makes me feel guilty too because I feel no remorse for the person getting shot, just thinking to myself when a horse gets knocked down how I wished they wouldn't have shown that, lol.

Nah I was referring to "Men Behind the Sun" (IMDB) a Hong Kong horror/war film (really an exploitation film) about the various biological experiments that the Japanese performed on their prisoners during World War II. Needless to say, not for the faint of heart. One of the most grotesque films I've ever seen, and I've seen some twisted shit.

Aftermath is a short Mexican film that's known as probably the most intensely gorey film ever made. I would describe the vague plot, but even describing the plot is likely to make some people's stomach turn.

With the plot of Aftermath? It's basically two men doing all kinds of depraved things with the corpses they are performing autopsies on. It's a short film with absolutely no dialogue, just horrifying images. In other words, don't watch it unless you feel the need to watch something that depraved.

I'm watching Speed right now on TV...I must be on a Keanu Reeves kick lately. Boy does Jeff Daniels look ridiculious with a gun in his hands. Who sends in Jeff freakin' Daniels to save the day?

I'm currently watching Toy Soldiers... such a fun fucking movie. Sean Astin did some great, great shit back in the day (Toy Soldiers, Rudy, White Water Summer, The Goonies, ect.). It's a shame he's going to get remembered most for playing a fucking hobbit walking for nine hours straight.

I liked it Norcal, but only as a trashy slasher film, which is all it's really good for. It's just as good as something like The Burning, if you've ever seen that. Meets all the slasher standards. Obviously it's not a good film, but still extremely enjoyable I thought. Had a few drinks and saw it with a few buddies and just had a kick-ass time watching it.

Oh and fuck Dice-K. I'm burning your jersey tomorrow asshole.

I expected more than a trashy slasher film I guess. I mean holy fuck man, was there ONE scene in that movie that didnt have gratuitous use of tits? I mean, a lot of those shots were just ENTIRELY unecessary. and the scrips was shit. Steaming, deplorable, not even attempting to make logical sense SHIT.

If this is how Nightmare on Elm Street ends up. well. Ill be very fucking upset. I truly dont have a lot of hope now.

But that's the point Norcal, slasher films are pure shit. That's what makes them so enjoyable in my opinion, they all follow the exact same formula and could be directed by a fifteen year old with a camcorder. They're B-Movies. All you need for a good slasher film is tits, drugs, and violence. You got those three things, and you're set.

Which is why I loved it. Jason in a field full of weed? Hilariously awesome.

Ill admit, I did enjoy the weed feild thing.

I guess I just expected better, much much better. I thought with a classic like Jason they would at least attempt quality. Just becuase its a slasher doesnt MEAN it HAS to be shit. Ive seen Slashers that were also good films before.

Thats why i dont want them fucking with Nightmare On Elm. if they fuckify that movie, which I consider to be above a slasher, and be an actual GOOD film, then ill be fuckin heated.

Then get ready to be heated man because it's Michael Bay producing again with Platinum Dunes, so it's not at all going to live up to the original in any shape, way or form. It's just going to be another trashy modern slasher along the lines of the F13 and TCM remakes.

Great trashy B-Movie popcorn fare, but nothing more is what you should expect.

I don't know, maybe. I'll probably end up waiting until the cheap night at the local theater (5 bucks on Weds). Looks hilarious though, Michael Cera + Harold Ramis + David Cross = Fuck to the Yes. I could care less about Black though, I've only really liked him in maybe one or two movies (High Fidelity and...that's about it. The Jackal.)

Random sidenote: I was just watching the episode of Raw from '97 where Owen comes back after Survivor Series, and god damn I never remembered just how good of a promo he cut when he first got back. Whoever said he couldn't cut a promo obviously never watched Raw that night.
