Bullshit about Movies

Anyways...anyone else excited for Funny People this week? Not sure how many Apatow fans there are here, I know he and guys like Rogen are blindly hated on by oh so many. This is the first film with Adam Sandler in it that I've been looking forward to in years. I really wish he'd take on some more serious roles, he was astounding in Punch-Drunk Love and Reign Over Me.

I haven't looked forward to a Adam Sandler film in....hmmm. Click was because of Kate Beckingsale, so I won't count that. I don't remember when I looked forward to a Sandler movie, I suppose. But Funny People will be great. I saw the Comedy Central special they aired on it, and it looks hilarious.

There is one person I'm seeing that movie for. It's Aziz Ansari. That man is ridiculously hilarious. He came to the UofA with Paul Scheer and Rob Huebel as their act Human Giant. They were the funniest thing I've seen in years. And I saw a giant banana getting chased by a gorilla in front of one of the "We're High School seniors, we don't know if we wanna come here" tours. Aziz got more laughs than when Doug Benson came to the UofA, and Benson made nothing but pot jokes....which invariably kill when you're playing to a crowd of stoners....which we were.

Leonardo DiCaprio, Heath Ledger, Johnny Depp, Matt Damon, Christian Bale, Jake Gyllenhaal, Joaquin Phoenix, etc.

Leo? Leo is great, but I couldn't imagine him as that character, whatsoever. He would look so out of place. Ledger? Again, couldn't imagine him there. In fact now that I look at your entire list, I couldn't picture a single one of those guys in that role except for maybe Joaquin, but he's too busy taking himself far too seriously and making awful music while promoting his beard to take on silly "acting" roles.

I just can't imagine anyone in that role but Owen. The accent helps.

Oh, and for the record, talking about Closer... one person I can't stand more than Clive Owen is Jude Law.

I'm not a huge fan of Law, but he can be good. He was great in The Talented Mr. Ripley, and he was pretty good in Road to Perdition as well. I loved him Closer too. Really I just love everyone in Closer though, I think the film was cast perfectly and is probably Nichols best work after The Graduate.

Well, here we go to agreeing with each other again. :D

We tend to run into that alot.

I love every single Apatow production thus far, and I cannot wait for Funny People. Not sure if I'm seeing it this week, but I'm definitely catching it eventually. I've been avoiding all the trailers and commercials for it, which should so you how much faith I have in the names Judd Apatow and Seth Rogen to do that and still want to see the movie.

I can't understand those people who hate on Rogen and Apatow, and there are so many of them. It's like a backlash of people who think they're too cool for Apatow's movies or something. I don't get those people, I'd rather have an intelligent Apatow comedy than another fucking "Rob Schnedier is (insert wacky premise here)" or another one of those awful Epic/Scary/Superhero Movies.

BTW, I'm watching my main man The Prodigy dominate Joe Stevenson right now. Is it sick that I take a twisted joy out of seeing Joe gush blood all over the mat? Earlier today I swear I was about 10 seconds away from posting in the MMA section, swear to God. I think I may be starting to get back into it. I've been really casual about MMA for year or so, used to be HUGE into it. I'm trying to make it my goal to get more involved in that section again.

Adam Sandler? An actual actor? I'll give him Punch Drunk Love, but that's because that movie was able to "recontextualize" (is that even a word, probably not, you get what I mean though) his zany behavior into serious situations that called for such reactions. And, I don't think there are many other roles out there for men who can play to a tee passive-aggressive softies with hearts of gold who have been emotionally abused by their sisters (simply put, this part was probably written with Sandler in mind).

That said, I am actually not looking forward to Apatow's new movie, because it looks too serious, something Apatow should stay away from. I think Knocked Up is one of the most overrated comedies ever, although The 40 Year-Old Virgin was effin' ace.

What about Reign Over Me tdigle? That was great acting through and through, no denying that. And so what if the role in Punch Drunk Love was written with him in mind, how does that detract from the role? Countless roles are written with certain actors in mind, hundreds, fuck THOUSANDS.

I loved both of those roles. Sandler damn well can act, and he showcased that in those films.

The ending to that fight is fucking awesome. When BJ grabs that choke, as he's squeezing, you can just see the blood gush out of Stevenson's head. It's one of the most awesome images I've ever seen in MMA.

I hope you come back around to the sport. Now's the best time to be a fan.

And btw, BJ fights at UFC 101, so look out for that.

You weren't impressed with Reign Over Me?

I loved Knocked Up. A bit of miscasting with Heigl (though she was still a MUCH better choice than Lohan, who originally got the part but turned it down), but other than that, the film is tremendous, imo.

I respect your opinion, but he has a lot of work to do before one can call him an actor. He's been trying to transition into serious roles for quite some time now, and it just don't seem to click. But, who knows? I probably would have said the same thing about Bill Murray in the 80s when he wanted to try his hand at a few serious roles and failed miserably. Now, Murray's a bona fide actor.

Incidentally, is anyone here flawlessly literate in Italian? I'm having some issues reading some shit on Argento, but, I guarantee his shit will be up tomorrow. Also, I'll be starting the Mann thread tomorrow as well so I can keep on schedule.

You know I respect your opinion highly as well tdigs, but that seems like a rather stuck-up attitude doesn't it? Comedic actors aren't considered "actors" anymore or something? Shit it's harder to be genuinely funny than it is to do drama.

Oh don't get me wrong I'm not about to say we should throw an Oscar at Sandler or anything, but he's certainly shown in those two roles that he's capable of quality dramatic acting.

It got horrible reviews. But, I love Peter Sarsgaard, so I might go see it sometime this week.

Not from the horror community it hasn't. When it comes to horror films, you really can't take anything the mainstream critics have to say seriously, because there is an overwhelming bias towards the genre in the media and always have been. Horror is a really specific genre that caters specifically to it's fans.

Bloody-Disgusting (pretty much number one place for horror on the web for those who don't know) gave the film 4 out of 5 stars, and JoBlo gave it 7.5/10. I trust both of those sources tremendously when dealing with movies, so I may check it out myself. The trailer makes it look fucking dreadful, but the same thing happened with Drag Me To Hell earlier this year and that turned out to be one hell of a movie.

Oh and Sarsgaard is fantastic, obviously. He steals every scene he's ever been in.

Fair enough.

I go to twitchfilm usually, although I haven't read their review of The Orphan yet.

I may seem like a hopeless nerd with this post, but who knows?

I'm completely stoked to here that they are remaking the Buffy movie! Totally looking forward to it, regardless of the fact Sarah's not involved, and it won't include the Scoobies. But, it's Buffy, Joss Whedon wrote the script, and I'm a dirty nerd.

Also, anyone besides me looking forward to the Thundercats movie?

I now refuse to see The Orphan, simply because of the sheer amount of floater ads they are throwing at me on this site. I've seen that little girl's face on my screen a hundred times, easy.

That, and I've already seen the film when McCaulay Culken was the crazy little kid. Something like The Good Son or whatever.

One of the reviews mentioned that film and said they're nothing alike. You don't really see Culkin murdering people in the Good Son, apparently in Orphan this little girl fucking massacres a few people I read.

Oh. Spoilers. Kind of. Too late.

Well then. I just might check it out. I didn't feel like watching a movie over again, is all. And that's not really a spoiler, considering the commercials show her hacking a nun up or something like that.

Reading the summary of the film does show the plot is nothing like the good son.

I watched "Mr. Brooks" for like the 10th time since it's on Showtime like every night, and I'm convinced it's an awesome movie. It seems to get better every time I watch it. Thoughts?

Bleh, Mr. Brooks is okay. It's decent for a popcorn flick, but nothing more. There are just far too many glaring problems with that movie for me to call it great. Costner and Hurt are good though.

Have I ever expressed here my love for B Rated action movies? Well... I love them, as much as X loves slashers.

I watched The Life and Death of Bobby Z yesterday and it was fucking AWESOME! Some very illogical shit in it, of course, but it didn't matter. Paul Walker's so fucking bad ass. Then you add Olivia Wilde and a bunch of kick ass fights that actually came off real with MMA style moves... I was in heaven, lol.

And for the record, Sasha Mitchell is and will forever remain my favorite B-Rated Action star. The Kickboxer sequels with him are fucking beyond epic. That plus my love for his character Cody on Step by Step... the guy is awesome, plain and simple.

Then that is some serious lovin', because we all know my love of all things slasher.

Paul Walker is infact pretty badass. Seen Running Scared? Great flick.

Holy shit Step by Step! Oh man I remember that terrible, terrible show.

I've just been having a convo about Cannibal Holocaust on another forum...brings back memories.

Such an awful, awful film. There's exploitation films, and than there's just pure drivel.

Yeah, I was reading that. I'm not a fan of that film in the least bit. Just too much for me.

Yes! Love it. That plus Joy Ride are my two favorite films from him. What'd you think of Joy Ride, X? Personally I think it's one of the best thrillers this decade.

Holy shit Step by Step! Oh man I remember that terrible, terrible show.

Terribly awesome, that is. I never get tired of that Brady Bunch rip-off.
