Bret wasn't selfish. Considering that HBK underappreciated Bret passing the torch to him at Wrestlemania 12 and saying he wouldn't do the same for Bret is the reason why he wouldn't drop the belt to him in Montreal. I mean Vince McMahon was foolish because somebody's overgrown nose was up his ass. HHH was in Vince's ear and Vince neglected the trust he and Bret had. It's a shame that somebody as dedicated as Bret (a guy who said he'd never want to leave) was treated like that. I mean he said he would drop the belt to anyone else on his way out. Hmm I wonder why they couldn't have had Owen Hart win it and have a feud with Michaels... does the Undertaker come to mind too? Bret was a proud champion and got the shit end of the stick.

If he really wanted to do what was best for the company instead of feed his own ego, he should have dropped the belt to HBK. End of story.

You know, HBK's "injury" is still speculation, so you can never really be sure that he wasn't, you know, telling the truth. People do that sometimes.
The fact of the matter is, Bret was going to WCW, and Vince didn't want to risk seeing his top belt being thrown into the garbage on national television (sound familiar?). Bret had backed Vince into a corner with his creative control clause in the contract, and the fact that Bret refused to give up the title to HBK because they weren't "friends" is just pathetic.
So I'll repeat:
If he really wanted to do what was best for the company instead of feed his own ego, he should have dropped the belt to HBK. End of story.

Well, he's a big draw, so THAT'S clearly a matter of opinion.
While I used to think like you, apparently Jeff Hardy is quite a draw. I know for a long time he was the biggest moneymaker in TNA, and the fact that he is holding IC belt and working main-events, seem to suggest he is a decent draw.
For whatever reason, Hardy apparently is a moneymaker.

Bret and Alundra Blaze, not the same people. Bret was loyal, Alundra had a chip on her shoulder. Bret was nothing but loyal to the WWE for 12 years, plain and simple. He saw Vince as another father, so there was zero motivation for him to do that
And besides, didn't Vince want Flair to bring the WCW title to the WWF so he can show boat it on TV. Vince was afraid that what he did to the NwA/WCW was coming back to bite him in the ass. So again, Vince's fault, not bret.
Jeff Hardy is shit. Why is he getting a push, to try and take away from Jericho's return because the Kliq, ie Nash and Triple H, have a stick up their asses concerning Jericho and anything to ruin him they'll jump right on it. Hence, Hardy gets a push. It's all politics.
