American Idol Season 11 Discussion

D-Man

Gone but never forgotten.
Being the fact that I've been a part-time singer for the past 18 years, anything on television that's based around music or vocal prowess sparks my interest. Therefore, I've been a fan of the show for quite some time now.

I'm tempted to create one of these every year but I know that most of the forum aren't fans of the show. But there are some who watch it and formulate their own opinions. So, here's a thread for all of us to weigh in on this year's contestants. I'll try to keep my opinions short and sweet.

(All I ask is that it doesn't become a derailed, bash-fest of the television program. If you don't care for the show, feel free to weigh-in about it. But for the most part, I really would like to keep this thread on-topic.)

Positive: This kid's got a really amazing voice. No denying that.
Negative: We've seen about a billion others just like him. I don't see enough originality for him to pull through this week.

Adam Brock

Positive: He's got a really original, throwback type of vocal. I also believe America will relate to his backstory and put him through based on that more than how well he did last night.
Negative: Pretty good voice but he can't hold a candle to the talent that he's up against. He'll get swallowed alive in this. Plus, I'm about 95% convinced that this guy is either bisexual or not straight and his marriage is a lie.

Positive: Good looking, country boy. As we saw with Scott McCreery last season, sometimes that's all it takes.
Negative: I believe he's the most mediocre person in the lineup this year. His vocals are forgettable and he lacks star power.

Colton Dixon

Positive: EVERYTHING about this kid screams superstar. He's like a reincarnated Jared Leto. The kid's got chops, he has a memorable, modern, rockstar look, he's good looking and has good stage energy. I think he made a good choice in coming out from behind the piano last night.
Negative: He's middle of the road in vocals, compared to the other contestants.

Creighton Fraker

Positive: BIG vocal range. He's not afraid to go for the big notes in songs. Very recordable sound to his vocals.
Negative: He's very strange and flamboyant. It also boggles my mind how he looked so unique in his package video, yet he was plain Jane last night. just not memorable enough for me.

DeAndre Brackensick

Positive: What ISN'T positive about this kid? Extremely good-looking, such a unique voice, great pitch, great control... one of my top picks of the season.
Negative: His voice might be TOO unique for America. It's very feminine, which makes it tough to appreciate.

Eben Franckewitz

Positive: Not a whole lot. He's young and genuine. That's about it.
Negative: This contest will swallow him alive. His voice was very nasally last night and he made a horrible song choice with Adele's "Fire to Rain".

Heejun Han

Positive: The true underdog of this season. He's an awkward Asian kid who seemingly doesn't belong in this setting but it can change his life. He has a very smooth and silky R&B voice that can really make a dent in this competition when you combine it with his overall persona.
Negative: TERRIBLE song choice last night. It did nothing to show off what he's really capable of doing. I hope America can look past that mistake and put him through.

Jeremy Rosado

Positive: A very nice, relaxing, controlled vocal. He's a humble kid and America can probably relate to him.
Negative: He's very forgettable. Sure, he can sing. But then what? I honestly forgot about him until I wrote this review.

Jermaine Jones

Positive: He's already been labeled as "The Gentle Giant." He has a very good, baritone vocal. His soft persona might get America behind him. Plus, his surprise return automatically makes him memorable.
Negative: He falls towards the bottom of the pack in vocal ability. Yes, he can sing but there are SO many others that are better. Plus, America wants to hear big notes. Not long, skilled bassy notes. I don't think they're going to appreciate Jermaine's skill.

Joshua Ledet

Positive: Holy SHIT... what a voice on this kid. A church voice like this always goes far in this competition. He's very much like Jacob Lusk from last season, except without the femininity.
Negative: Nothing so far. He's got all the tools.

Phillip Phillips

Positive: EVERYTHING about him is positive. He is my favorite male in this competition. Randy said it last night and I was thinking it; this kid is the next Dave Matthews. He has an easy name to remember, he's good looking, plenty of energy, his style is extremely unique for American Idol, he has a great personality and he's a true musician.
Negative: Bad song choice last night. I hope to God America puts him through. It'll be the best choice they make this whole season.

Reed Grimm

Positive: Another indie-musician type. A good voice, I like his use of the drums, and he has a great personality.
Negative: I don't think America appreciates this type of musician enough to keep him in the competition.

I figured a spam section would do this discussion more justice and gain more replies than a non-spam section. However, if I start seeing this thread getting derailed and abused, I'll move it to non-spam.

I have watched every episode of Idol for the first 10 years, watched every audition week, watched all of the Hollywood week stuff, but I didn't watch a minute of it last night. This season was the first time I have ever been home to watch Idol that I didn't. None of the singers have inspired me at all...Not that the singers aren't high quality, just that nobody has grabbed my attention so far this year.

I will probably still watch most of the time, but I not nearly as excited for it this year as I was before. On the other hand, that may be a blessing in disguise. It means I am not biased for or against any particular singer, no favorites.

I swore I would never ever watch American Idol. Then Steven Tyler joined as a judge last year, and as an Aerosmith fan I caved in just to see what he had to say. I've watched a couple of episodes again this year, not sure who I'm supporting yet.

I actually haven't watched a single episode this season. Last year I watched the auditions (they're funny), then I saw James Durbin perform a Judas Priest song and watched the season. This year I didn't catch anything. I may try and listen to some of the performances to see if there's anyone I may like.

The Voice is 10 thousand times better. Better musicians. Better judges. Better everything.

D-Man, Do you have anything about the women who are in this competition? I wanna hear your opinions on them.

BTW, The Colton Dixon guy does come off to me as a Jared Leto kind of singer, he screams STAR to me.
I do like that Phillip Phillips kid, hes unique.

But this years season seems weak compared to last years season. They had a lot more star-power back then.
They had a variety of genres to choose from: James Durbin (Metal) Casey Abrams (Jazz) Haley Reinhart (Jazz/Blues) Paul McDonald (Indie) Stefano (R&B/Pop) Scotty & Haley (Country/Southern Rock) Jacob Lusk (Gospel/R&B) Pia Toscano (Ballads/Pop)
This year....from what I heard from the guys, doesnt WOW me that much.

Is it just me or its always like this, one season its amazing, then the year after its ok, then the next is amazing, then after its ok.

I'm on board with Phillip Phillips. The dude is supremely talented. Problem is, I believe he might be a little too talented for the watered down bullshit that mainstream America lusts after.

That Reed Greem dude is very talented, but he seems really, really creepy to me.

Josh Ledet is a sick vocalist. He's the type of dude that takes you to church every time he sings, and I mean that in a good way.

D-Man, Do you have anything about the women who are in this competition? I wanna hear your opinions on them.

I will after tonight's show. It's difficult to formulate opinions prior to them performing on a live show.

Is it just me or its always like this, one season its amazing, then the year after its ok, then the next is amazing, then after its ok.

It's tough when you clean out America's talent pool. Just like with wrestling, once you get all the good ones, it takes a while for the next generation to come back through.
