So my guess is that an IB course is more like what an AP (advance placement) class is over here since you can get college credit for those classes too.

Math's different in which you can be self-taught; as long as you've done the work right and come to the right answer you really can't be graded low. English however, teachers will have their own reasons for grading shit (I've an EN101 professor right now who's a stickler for grammar and substance so I ace everything) so it really depends on making sure you stick to their preferences. Also, if you don't mesh well with the professor they can bullshit your grade with a lot less room for rebuttal, as any class with definitive answers (3x+6=18, x is always four, you can't say it's maybe 6) you can just show a dean or something and they're fucked
