5 Star/Perfect Matches, the non-spam version

King Of The Ring
From 1997-2011, the illustrious() Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer gave not a single WWF/E match a five star rating. In 1997, he gave two: Austin vs. Hart in their submissions match, and the HBK/Undertaker Hell In A Cell match. The next match from the WWE to make the list was CM Punk/John Cena from MITB 2011, and no matches since have received one. Wade Keller of PWTorch.com, while not as stingy as Meltzer, gave only three other WWE matches between '97 and 2011 that much-sought-after rating. And while they get paid for their opinions and their sites, I just do this because I enjoy it, but I think both left several glaring omissions off their list. So, along with me, here's your chance to discuss some matches you feel should have gotten that 5-star rating, and why. I came up with 9 myself(from WWE), but I'm only going to go with 3 here, so as not to make it more difficult for others. Plus I'm too lazy to type out 9 matches and why each belongs on the 5-star list. ;) I'll post the highlights of the three I'm using just to give you an idea of what I'm talking about.

And if you think I'm wrong, feel free to tell me so, and why, as well. Just be sure to have one of your own.

Chris Benoit/Kurt Angle vs. Rey Mysterio/Edge, No Mercy 2002: Simply put, this is the best tag-team match I've ever seen. It received Match Of The Year honors from several publications, and while I know every year doesn't have a 5-star match, this one was. The back-story going was that Benoit and Angle hated one another, and were forced to team together by SD! GM Stephanie McMahon. If they came to blows at any time, they were both suspended for a year, without pay. This match was to crown the inaugural Tag Team Champions exclusive to Smackdown, and the two teams had won their respective branches of a tournament to get here.

Edge was really coming into his own as a wrestler, Mysterio was somewhat new to WWE, and Benoit and Angle were, well, Benoit and Angle. What made this match so special, along with the ring work involved, was the camera angles. There were so many false finishes that looked like the end for certain, only for it to be broken up. All four men were pretty health at the time, so the foursome worked fast and hard for nearly 25 minutes without missing a beat. The story-telling here was fantastic as well, as there was a spot where Benoit was knocked into Angle, and the two came close to blows, only to realize winning the tag championships were more important. The ending came when Mysterio moonsaulted onto Benoit near the end of the match on the outside, taking both out. This left just Edge and Angle in the ring, with Edge perhaps getting slightly cocky and using the Ankle Lock on Angle, only for Angle to reverse into one of his own, to which Edge tapped. Just a brilliant display of getting away from 'formula' tag-team wrestling, with four men going all out to win. My favorite tag match of all time, and if you haven't seen it, what are you waiting for?

Chris Benoit vs. Kurt Angle, Royal Rumble 2003: Gee, it's another match involving both Angle and Benoit! This is the match I was watching a few nights ago that got me thinking about this, and was for the WWE Title. I'm always curious as to how others rate matches, so I searched Meltzer's 5-star list, and was shocked this wasn't on it. Both men have had some fantastic matches in their careers, but I'd be hard-pressed to think of a better one either has had. This was just an absolute war between two men that beat the tar out of each other, and a technical masterpiece at that. The finishing sequence was absolutely insane, perhaps the best I've ever seen. I thought it might be over when Benoit hooked the Crossface, but Angle reversed it into a Powerbomb. After kicking out of the Angle Slam, I was sure it was over when Benoit hooked the Crossface again, but Angle somehow rolled through into the Ankle Lock. Benoit then used kicks, punches, and roll-throughs, but he still couldn't break it, and Angle eventually grapevined the leg and held on for the submision victory.

Benoit got a standing ovation from the Boston crowd following the match, which is such a rare thing in wrestling. If this isn't a 5-star match, I'm not sure what is.

Shawn Michaels vs. The Undertaker, Wrestlemnia 25: This is probably the one most think of when they think of a recent 5-star match, but surprisingly, it didn't make the list. There were several men who wanted to face Undertaker at Wrestlemnia, and HBK beat Vladimir Kozlov, thankfully, to 'earn' the right to face Undertaker. For weeks leading into the match, HBK played head games with the Undertaker, including hitting him with Sweet Chin Music(SCM) every week.

This was, of course, the first of bck-to-back meetings between HBK and Undertaker at Wrestlemania, and the better of the two. Quite honestly, they had me believing Shawn could break the Streak, which as one of the holy grails in wrestling, was no small feet. There was a spot near the end where Shawn hit SCM and made an immediate cover, only for Undertaker to kick out. The match ended just a few minutes later with Shawn trying a Moonsault from the top rope, only to be caught and Tombstoned for Undertaker to go to 16-0. In my mind, while a different match entirely, this was better then their Hell In A Cell match from '97, which did receive five stars.

Just as a quick aside, this applies to only WWE matches, and those between 1997 and today.

Are there matches between 97' and today from WWE that are glaring omissions from the 5-star/near perfection list? Why?

Here's a link to Meltzer's complete list, from all companies, if you're interested. I can do a similar thread in the TNA section if people would like.

2 of the Wrestlemania 17 matches, being TLC and Austin vs Rock deserve 5-stars in my opinion. Triple H and Undertaker is also pretty close as well, but I preferred their later work.

The TLC match did everything it was supposed to do: Cause absolute carnage and hit a lot of good looking spots. Everybody served a purpose in the match, and the stunts were absolutely stunning. While I think the Smackdown Six match is better in terms of actual wrestling, this match is better for its sheer scale and I consider it on par with the Smackdown Six match.

And of course, Austin and The Rock. I don't think there had been a main event this anticipated, this hyped up since Wrestlemania 3. And it delivered on all fronts. We got the Austin heel turn (even though it wasn't well received, it was done well imo), we got a great match and we got one of the most recognised wrestling matches of all time. Definitely worth 5-stars.

WrestleMania 17 : Rock .vs. Austin

The video leading up to it gave me goosebumps. The match was exciting and really made me a true fan of wrestling. I have never seen a better video package and exciting match in a long time.

Royal Rumble 2003 : Kurt Angle .vs. Chris Benoit

The Match was ridiculously awesome, from all the reversals to the classic clean finish from the Heel Kurt Angle... I really loved this match.

Vengeance 2003? : Undertaker /vs/ Rock /vs/ Kurt Angle

I was already a fan of the rock, but big evil was awesome and Kurt Angle is my favorite wrestler so it was amazing. The match was back and forth and was highly anticipated from the rocks return. The match was great and ended well leading to the Rock .vs. Brock at summerslam which was awesome.

Brock vs Undertaker in a Hell in a Cell match always stood out to me.

The cast on Taker's arm, the brutality both men went through, using Paul Heyman in the match, etc. The match worked so well for me. While it might've not been 5 stars to everyone, it was 5 stars to me. Over the years I think I've watched the match at least 5 times.

Rock v Austin both at 15 and 17 I'd give 5 stars. Taker/Mankind HIAC was the most incredible spectacle I've ever seen in the WWE. Although not a technical classic, it had everything entertainment wise.

Taker/HBK at 25 is without question a 5 star match. It was the greatest WM match I've seen and arguably my favourite ever match. The beauty of it was that I really wasn't expecting it to be anywhere near as good as it was, and when something surpasses expectation as spectacularly as that match did you won't forget it in a hurry. Brilliant match.

CM Punk vs Daniel Bryan at Over the Limit.

The crowd was back and forth with "CM Punk", "Daniel Bryan". There was near fall after near fall. The wrestling in that match was 5 star quality. Being there live was exciting and enjoyable.

That match happened in 2012. Fucking read the thread.

Kurt Angle vs. Shawn Michaels at Wrestlemanin XXI. An excellent match with superb psychology and storytelling, especially on Shawn's part.

Kurt Angle vs Shawn Michaels at Wrestlemania 21 is up there for sure. Even knowing nothing about those two, the prematch promo, told you everything you needed to know about why the match was happening, and the in ring performance did the rest. 30 minutes of pure, uncut, FDA approved wrestling.

Edge v Undertaker Wrestlemania 24 - this was a match I had wanted to see for years as it was 2 of my favourites going at it and it did not disappoint but one of the best things for me was that the storm in orlando was getting really bad at the start of there match and people were starting to leave but then a bit into the match people realised they were witnessing a classic and started heading back to there seats and it was also the 1st time a can remember of fans chanting 15-1 at Undertaker.

The Rock v Kurt Angle No Way Out 2001- I was 11 at the time and usually just cared about the result of the match but this was one of the 1st times I ever thought at the end of a match that was awesome.

Y2J v HBK Wrestlemania 19 - was a great match and the build was great as well with the story being the youngster challenging the veteran

um, I was at wrestlemania 24 and there was no storm. nobody headed back to their seats, because no one left. and I don't remember hearing a single cheer for edge. in fact, the crowd was silent for most of the match.

Shawn Michaels vs HHH at Summerslam 2002:The first match in their long feud from 2002-2004 and in my opinion the best one.

Alot of good matches mentioned which can be argued as being a 5 star match. I want to go a different route and talk about a match that was one move away from not only being a 5 star match, but quite possibly one of the greatest matches of all time.

WrestleMania XIX: WWE Title Match Kurt Angle (c) vs Brock Lesnar

I'm sure the second you read the bold part the first thing that came to mind is the botched shooting star press. And that's a shame because those two guys put on one hell of a fast paced, intense, hard hitting match with so many great slams. Another thing to remember is Kurt wrestled the match with a messed up match that would force him out of action for a few months. Had Angle been a foot closer and Brock hits the shooting star press clean this match would have been perfect.

Two matches stand out for me:

Undertaker vs. HHH, Hell in a Cell (Shawn Michaels special referee), Wrestlemania 28

I was 100% into this match. Every move looked brutal. Every emotion was intact. As an Undertaker fan who thinks the streak should never end, I spent so much time fidgeting and losing my mind on my friend's couch. And especially when Shawn Michaels superkicked Taker into HHH's Pedigree, I screamed at the top of my lungs in my friend's house in front of his mother YOU SON OF A BITCH! It took me 3 minutes to calm down from it. And when the match ended I was almost in tears because I thought that was it for Taker.

John Cena vs. CM Punk, WWE Title Match, Money in the Bank 2011

Knock it all you want, but the crowd made that match for me. Kudos to the match makers as well letting Punk really play the face and not try to force him down the heel route. It was a great back-and-forth match that the Chicago crowd was absolutely incensed with, and the ending was beautifully laid out: Cena chases off Laurinitis' goons, Punk catches him and hits the GTS, he gets the win and jumps into the Chicago crowd with the WWE Title running around like a schoolboy as McMahon stares at him seething!
