I would say that it has been a decent year for the box office receipts and there have been a lot of big releases but I am unsure as to whether that has translated into actual quality.
I think outside of Prometheus the big blockbusters have been better quality wise this year than most in recent memory. But then I think the first Christopher Reeve Superman film was still the best comic book superhero film made until the Avengers came out. I know I am right in that train of thought, but make of it what you will.
TDKR was a satisifying pay-off to a trilogy where all the main plotlines were concluded. The Avengers was one of those mediocre Marvel crossover storylines that was all bubble and no squeak.

This'll turn into Marvel vs DC if I am not careful. Oh well.
Batman is the most pompous franchise I've seen in years, stunningly overrated because TDK had a half decent villain and a morality tale about the nature of superhero's etc. Gary Oldman's monologue at the end of TDK? Where Batman is running away from the Police? Nolan might as well have spaffed in his hand and written "this film is awesome" on the camera lens with his own jizz. Good films? Certainly, but self indulgent wank on a level that The Avengers could never compete on.
Avengers, all bubble and no squeak? How about buckets of fun in which people get to see some of their favourite characters in a smackdown against Aliens and each other, which also happened to have a pretty good story to back it up, great dialogue, great interaction between the characters and manages to be genuinely exciting from start to finish while not taking itself overly seriously. I know some people had issues with its use of humour, but thats Marvel all over, one of the characters is a green brute and another other is a blonde dude with a hammer, and they fight each other, excuse me while my inner ten year old is screaming with delight. It comes to something when the worst part of a film is the battle at the end, and even that was fantastic. Brilliant film, but then it doesnt strive to have some kind of deeper meaning but makes an effort to give fans plenty of "YES!" moments, so I can see why some would call it self indulgent. . . Well not really./fanboyism.
Still a better film than all of the Batmans though.
Best films I've seen so far this year (in no order)...
The Dark Knight Rises
The Avengers
Silver Lining Playbook
Jeff, Who Lives At Home
21 Jump Street
The Cabin in the Woods
Movies I still need to see:
Ted
Premium Rush
Killer Joe End of Watch Seven Psychopaths
The Master
Django Unchained
This Is 40
Killing Them Softly Argo
The Perks of Being a Wallflower
Hitchcock
The Sessions
If it was only half decent then why did Heath Ledger win an Oscar for his role? Sure, it's not the traditional Joker, but it certainly worked within the context of the films.
See this is the crux of it for me. The Nolan trilogy can afford to be self-indulgent in it's conclusion since it had been written to end accordingly; a climax had been built up to, all the main characters had considerable story arcs that were wrapped up. While there are little cheeky winks to the fanboys in the Nolan movies, as a trilogy they take themselves pretty seriously as films, and that's what I enjoyed about them from the start - it's a comic book franchise that doesn't follow all the gimmicky tropes. Sure, they're far from perfect, and have faults and inconsistencies that piss me off, but they still come off as a very well made trilogy of films.
The Avengers, on the other hand, as well as all the movies in the MCU, don't really seem to be moving forward on the same lines. The individual films are good (sometimes brilliant) in isolation, only tessellate loosely, and when all the characters were cobbled together finally, it felt a bit slapdash. Of course, there'll be an Avengers 2 where all the characters will meet up and fall out and kiss and make up all over again, and this time they will have developed further.

Don't get me wrong, it was fun, and I got what it was going for. Like I said initially, it's only on the second viewing that I got bored with it. In the cinema I had to stop myself from standing up and making the Jim Duggan noise I was that carried away by it. But at home the second time round I wasn't absorbed by it in the same way, and felt myself wanting to skip towards the suitably silly final battle, whereas I can watch the Batmans over and over and still enjoy them.
Essentially, I enjoyed them in different ways because they are completely different films, despite both being "superhero" movies.
All Christmas songs get on my tits, Miko. When you've worked in the service industry as long as I have they just end up becoming annual month-long rashes on the inside of your ears.
If you like the music, there are times it can be good- but mostly its crap. The only reason to watch it though is the fact he has a baboon sidekick called "Hey Man". Yes thats right, i said baboon sidekick. He likes to fuck shit up and get wasted. Classic stuff right there..
It does not suck, Tom Cruise was gold in the movie, The mashups of songs were well done as was all the singing (doesn't touch the originals but no cover ever does) and the love story of Drew & Sherrie was written well.

No, it does. It's boring, unfunny, and the plot is thin. The film is also too long. A few of the songs are decent but if I wanted to listen to them I would download the song instead of watching the crappy film.
Tom Cruise is the only memorable part of the film, and even that couldn't save it.
I went to see "The Life of Pi" today and it's the best movie of the year BY FAR, it's just a fantastic story about religion, about faith and about the suffer of a man that saw his family die and had to get the guts to survive without them. It's one of these movies you can't just forget. If you didn't watch it, go do it and believe me it's worth every cent.

Amour, followed by Rust and Bone, followed by Beasts of the Southern Wild. Prometheus gets a special nod for being the best Hollywood film I've seen this year...it could've been a masterpiece with a different script.
I don't want you to take this as an overly antagonistic comment, but can you explain why you feel this way? You're a passionate movie fan so you will likely give some more insight than my friends who have liked it but I just couldn't find enough about the film to like.
As I said, I'm not asking to be a dick, I just want to hear why you feel the way you do about it.
