Death Note is the only episodic anime I have ever seriously enjoyed (for reasons that extended beyond "Charizard is awesome"), mostly because I got a kick out of analysing the rampant homosexual subtext.

Read the first few chapters of the Pokemon manga. It's a heck of a lot darker than the anime and games will ever be, then again IIRC it's what the creators had originally intended for there to be a darker tone to the series.
