WZCW Discussion Thread

I've just realised that kind of person I hate most in the world.

People who say "Oh well, you're entitled to your opinion," instead of having a good debate about the subject. The amount of people who have pussed out when I want to have a discussion about why I think Last of Us is overrated is frustrating as balls.

The thing is, most forms of media are matters of taste. There IS no definite answer when it comes to books, games, movies, music...

The Last of Us is essentially a well-written interactive game that feels like a movie. That aspect of the game draws the viewer in just like any good movie or television show, wanting to know what happens next. The best part is the interactive element it presents because not only do you live the lives of the characters but you can be the character, playing as them to get from one stage to the next. By playing the game, you get rewarded with the story you crave.

However, you have to follow the storyline presented and the only thing you can change is how you get there but that has little to no effect on the story. It is very linear and the times you do have to play as the character, the puzzles aren't challenging and you have very limited options to use. Sure, you can get creative with how you get from one checkpoint to the next but its almost the same thing: sneak, observe, act. The big kicker is that this game has a thriller/horror aspect to it (considering the infected) and is supposed to get you feeling scared but how scared can you get when you can just restart to your previous checkpoint at will? That took a lot of the atmosphere away from the game - being able to remove myself from a legitimately scary situation at a moments notice. What happened to growing a set of balls?

Last of Us has flaws and doesn't make this game a perfect 10 but its one of the best games of this generation of consoles and I'm happy I'm a play-station fanboy.

The dialogue is well-written, sure. But the plot is so predictable, with many of its most memorable scenes, as well as the premise of the ending, being ripped straight from other games of this generation. For example:

Heavy Rain
The kid dying in the intro. Happened to both Joel and Ethan.

The Walking Dead
A supporting character killing themselves after their loved one becomes infected. Happened to both Henry/Sam and Katja/Duck

Spec Ops: The Line
The protagonist that we've been rooting for turns out to be the bad guy in the end. Joel fucked up Earth's best chance for survival to keep his new daughter, while Walker in Spec Ops fucked up Dubai just so he could be a hero. We realise neither is going on until the closing scenes.

It also takes the more general plot points from other games.

A young, naive girl who has lived a sheltered life due to her parent figure wanting to protect her, and has a power that is far greater than she realises, which wants to be harnessed by those who we feel are the antagonists of the game. That could be both Ellie or Elizabeth from Bioshock.

Or how about:

A man with a troubled past, who becomes a surrogate father for a scared, young girl. They travel together in a zombie infested country, meeting other survivors along the way, to try and find some hope. They grow closer during their journey, with the father figure becoming incredibly protective of the young girl, but it ends badly. Ellie and Joel, or Lee and Clementine from The Walking Dead?

A lot of what you say here is pretty spot on.

All that seems to happen is that you walk through some suburban or town area then walk through some large buildings. Fight or stealth past some people, then fight or stealth past some of the least scary zombies I've ever fought. Those "puzzles" are not puzzles at all, they're finding and placing a ladder/plank. It just becomes a predictable pattern. Especially when there's so much potential for exploration:

Look at how big that college campus is! But you can only go inside the building you're supposed to go inside...

The shooting is fine, it's just a non sci-fi version of Mass Effect's shooting mechanics. But there are plenty of times where Ellie just runs across the line of fire like a confused but excited dog. Aren't we supposed to be protecting this girl at all costs? Let her hide in the corner like Elizabeth, or stick her in a dumpster like Ashley from Resident Evil 4.

And then there's the stealth mechanics. Oh the stealth mechanics...

I have played every Splinter Cell, every Hitman and every 3D MGS and I can tell you that the Last of Us doesn't do stealth very well. Bad guys are supposed to follow patterns and routines, so you know how to get past them or take them out. Them's the rules of stealth mechanics. The guys in Last of Us seem to just walk around randomly. One time, I hid behind a desk and a guard walked right past me. The next time, I hid in the exact same spot and he decided to look right at me.

Also, a stealth game where you can't move dead or unconscious bodies is a fucking joke.

There's also the atmosphere, or lack therof, like FalK aluded to. So many moments for potential scares are wasted. There are some genuinely creepy and tense parts in the game but:

the parts where your vision is obscured by the spores is just a lazy, cheap way to create tension. I understand Silent Hill doing it back in the day, when technology and the survival horror genre as a whole was a lot further behind, but surely we're past such simply ploys?

And of course, as a I mentioned here, my stealth bar just disappeared for a few levels, and I was unable to open a door I needed to go through to progress through the level.

Finally, some choices would've added a lot to the game in my opinion, especially if you could decide what happened at the end, if you know what I mean. Another missed opportunity.

8.5 tops, and that's being generous. The fact is, exclusives are always over rated by critics and fans just cause they're exclusives. Uncharted, Halo, God of War, Pokemon, etc. etc.

I regret this post already.

If I wasn't powering through seasons 3 and 4 of Community as well as it being midnight, I'd provide an appropriate response. So you can have this win on a technicality.

Season 2, season 1, season 3 and season 4 in order of quality. Though competitive holiday music is quite possibly the funniest 30 minutes of sitcom I've ever seen.

I kinda prefer Season 3 to 1, due to Seasons 1's slow start. Season 2 is fantastic, though.

I know what you mean, but once season one gets rolling the quality is there in spades.

On the plus side I can turn up community references on the podcast now.

I might go 1, 2, 3, 4 to be totally honest. Season 2 might have the better episodes on average, but season 1 has a few of the absolute best episodes including Paintball 1, Chicken Finger Mafia, and the one where Jack Black is a special guest (I love when people accidentally get kicked in the face).

It's also worth noting that 3 is a lot closer to 2 in quality than it is to 4. 4 is just... awful. Not totally devoid of humor as some folks thing, but pretty damn close.
