Let's have a look at the cards..

1997
  1. Mankind defeated Hunter Hearst Helmsley (with Chyna) in a Steel cage match
  2. Goldust (with Marlena) defeated Brian Pillman in a Singles match
(As a result of his loss, Brian Pillman had to wear Marlena's dress until he won a match.)
  3. The Legion of Doom (Hawk and Animal) defeated The Godwinns (Henry and Phineas) in a Tag team match
  4. The British Bulldog (c) defeated Ken Shamrock by disqualification in a Singles match for the WWF European Championship
(If British Bulldog had lost the title, he would have had to eat a can of dog food.)
  5. Los Boricuas (Savio Vega, Miguel Pérez, Jr., Jose Estrada, Jr. and Jesus Castillo) defeated The Disciples of Apocalypse (Crush, Chainz, 8-ball and Skull) in an Eight-man tag team match
  6. Steve Austin defeated Owen Hart (c) in a Singles match for the WWF Intercontinental Championship
(If Austin didn't win the title, he would have to kiss Owen Hart's ass)
  7. Bret Hart defeated The Undertaker (c) in a Singles match for the WWF Championship, with Shawn Michaels as special guest referee.
(If Bret Hart didn't win the title, he would have never been allowed to wrestle in the United States again)

2007
  1. Kane defeated Finlay in a Singles match
  2. Umaga (c) defeated Carlito and Mr. Kennedy in a Triple Threat match for the WWE Intercontinental Championship

I have seen both ppv's and my vote has to go to 1997. There were a lot of changed about to happen e.g. Bret started his last reign, Austin injured his neck, new stars were starting to climb up the ranks e.g. HHH...It was miles ahead of 2007 in my opinion which didn't have much going..We saw Khali going into a big event as World champion and got DQ'd, another Orton/Cena match, a few boring matches...
What I liked about 1997 was nearly all the matches had a stipulation, maybe they were funny ones, but even though, each match IMO was very enjoyable to watch..The only reason I watched 2007 live was because Triple H was returning and as good as it was, the match disapointed me a lil bit.
1997 takes my vote because:
  • Steel Cage match
  • Stipulations involved in matches
  • WWF Championship match

What I did enjoy about 2007:
  • Triple H returning

What would you say?

97 was definitely better. Simple answer is because the whole industry was better at the time.

Summerslam '07 was horrible as I recall. The HHH return wasn't anywhere near as good as it was hyped to be. This was also the period where Batista probably started to hate this business because they were making him out to be the Elmer Fudd of WWE. Every time he thought he had that "rabbit" he was stuck off the cliff with a sucker as a head.

97 was great because it was the beginning of the DX Hart fued, which of course led to one of the biggest moments in wrestling history. The HHH Foley cage match was awesome. And I'm pretty sure this was the last PPV match of the great Brian Pillman (could be wrong though).

1997 brought about the biggest rivalry in the history of the industry. USA v. CANADA. It was incredible how much the fans got into the split between The Hart Foundation and the rest of WWE. The way they would boo the top faces like Austin and LOD was insane. Bret probably should have run for office that year, it would have been a landslide.

1997 def. 2007 in a squash.

I mean you really can't compare the two, because it was two completely different eras of the WWE and there was a major difference between Wrestling then and now (stages, entrances, moves, wrestlers, gimmicks etc) WWE was more entertainment then wrestling in 2007 compared to 1997. We were on the brink of the attitude era and we were still selling out arenas with smaller stages, less pyro, more wrestling and had more gimmicks than real people.

2007 You had a lot of quality wrestlers but the matches were thrown together and that was the problem with wrestling in this era you have to make people interested in a feud and fight within three weeks, where 97 was hyped up over two ppvs...

So if you make me choose its 97, but really you can't compare apples and tomatoes...

That's the whole point of these series.

Anyway, I think 97' was better. Simply because I loved the WWF championship match. I'm not a huge HHH mark, so him returning wasn't all that great to me... The whole card for 97' was good, I loved wrestling in 97', probably one of my favourite years.

This is not even close in my opinion. SummerSlam 1997 was the second best SummerSlam right behind 2002. SummerSlam 2007 was one of the worst. 97 was full of great feuds, storylines, and matches. When Mankind vs. Triple H in a steel cage match is opening the show you know it’s a good ppv. Owen vs. Austin was on its way to becoming an all time classic until the botched piledriver. The main event was a great championship match between two all time greats that featured a controversial guest referee and a unique stipulation. SummerSlam 97 had a certain atmosphere that just felt like a huge event. I really feel this event was a turning point for WWE as it was about to break out of a big slump and become the top promotion again. SummerSlam 2007 didn’t really feature anything memorable. 1997 by a mile here.

my vote goes to 97 hands down the reason because it had better feuds and storylines and the whole industry was better i have to agree with the brain owen vs austin is a classic match i believe that even with the botched piledriver it is still one of the greatest SS matches of all time SS 97 was what defined SS and i believe that there has never and will never be another SS like it.
