Would Hogan be a good commentator for WWE?

think about it with a open mind, tna is firing people every week it seems like if tna fired hogan he would probaly be open to a wwe return, and wwe would give him a legends contract, which could lead to hogan being commentator on monday night raw, it would be fresh and a good way to bring hogan into wwe? whats your thoughts on this?

Hogan if he were to return to the WWE, I would love to see Hogan in a part-time capacity in the sense that Hogan were to return every now and then but if Hogan has any more matches left in him then I would love to see him face off against Cena because it has always been a dream match and not to mention everyone compares Cena to a modern-day Hogan so it makes sense

But realistically I don't think Hogan can go anymore in the ring but with Hogan back in a WWE ring he could always be the GM for either RAW or Smackdown

I've got really mixed feelings about him coming back at all. On the one hand, what could he really do for WWE? On the other hand, he's Hulk Hogan....and if you have a pro wrestling company, having him jam in a few appearances might bring back some of the old fans.

The question in this topic is whether he'd be a good commentator.....and that's hard to answer. The only times I can remember him sitting at the announcer's table was when he was promoting himself, which is something Hogan has surely excelled at over the decades. My immediate feeling is that he'd be worthless as a person talking about what's going on in the ring because he'd be too busy talking about himself, starting every sentence with "Brother....." and sounding more like an advertisement for taking vitamins and saying prayers than someone who could impart wisdom about pro wrestling.

Remember, too, WWE commentating has advanced from the days of Randy Savage grunting his observations ....to people like John Bradshaw Layfield, who adds intelligent theater to the proceedings. Even Jerry Lawler has changed; he gives some good insights based on his long association with pro wrestling, instead of yammering about "puppies."

If Hogan did somehow return to the E, I'd prefer to keep him out of the ring and off the mic at ringside.

I don't think he would be a good commentator. All "Hogan only gets himself over" jokes aside I just don't think it would be a good fit for him. Just the way Hogan talks in interviews and his promo style (which he could easily change) he often doesn't have a lot to say about wrestling matches or anything like that. Don't get me wrong its not that I don't think he understands wrestling or anything but he doesn't seem like the type of guy who can properly get a match over in a commentary booth.

Being a good commentator is easy on paper but its not the easiest job in the world to do, you got to have a good ability of not only getting the athletics in the ring over, but the storyline and characters as well. Although Hogan is a great stick man he doesn't have the gift of gab like Jerry Lawler does. Hogan has never been great at giving comebacks on the mic and frankly if you put him there an experienced commentator he would get eaten alive. Hogan has a lot of gifts but I don't think commentary is one of them. There's a quick wit that's needed with commentary and Hogan has never proven to have that quick wit to make it work.

Hogan genuinely can't promote anything if it isn't completely over the top promotion. By that I mean he would state during a Fandango vs R Truth match on Smackdown that it is probably the biggest grudge match in the history of wrestling with two guys who are are two of the biggest superstars ever

He'd be awful

Definitely not on commentary. He would be awful and would say the word "brother" at least 50 times per night. Maybe a few sporadic appearances, cutting promos and giving us some great moments. Something involving Cena and Hogan probably needs to happen.

I don't want to see him in the ring (I don't think anyone does) but I would love if they did something involving Warrior. That could be gold. Just ten minutes of Warrior v Hogan at WM30 could be hilarious.

I think he'd be awful. Cutting a promo and doing commentary are two huge different things. I don't think his delivery style would work at all and I think he would try too hard and it would just come off bad.

That's no slight to Hogan though. I thought Roddy Piper was awful on commentary too. Arn Anderson was an excellent promo guy and he tried commentary for a little bit. While I don't remember Arn on commentary he said he didn't like it and wasn't very good at it.

Good promo work doesn't always equate to good commentary skill.

Eh, just because you have personality and can cut promos pretty well doesn't necessarily mean that you'd be a good commentator. Frankly, Hulk Hogan is a huckster. I don't mean that as a reference to the WWF commercials back in the 90s featuring parodies of Hogan, Savage and Turner; I mean that Hogan is a shameless self-promoter who is far more interested in being in the spotlight than anything else. As a commentator, Hogan wouldn't be in the spotlight and he'd have to spend his time, whether he's a face or heel commentator, putting over the talents of other wrestlers. I just don't see Hogan being able to do that for any reasonable period of time.

When it comes to Hogan returning to WWE, I've got no real interest in seeing it happen. Hogan's been in TNA for nearly 3.75 years and, during that time, the value of the Hulk Hogan brand is vastly less than it once was. For the better part of 4 years, Hogan has been one of the central figures in TNA. Quite often, Hogan has been THE primary focus as a babyface or heel despite the fact that he hasn't been a relevant draw for TNA any more than any other member of the roster and that he can't really wrestle anymore. IF the various reports are also true, Hogan's made a lot of money from his deal with TNA as, allegedly, Hogan gets paid $30,000 per appearance.

In the grand scheme of things, I don't really see what Hogan has to offer that would be of any real benefit to WWE. Oh, I'd say that Raw could probably pop a rating for a week or two due to people tuning in for the nostalgia of seeing Hulk Hogan back in a WWE ring. Because of Hogan's past glories, him coming to TNA felt like a major deal and a signal to some that TNA had arrived. WWE doesn't need Hogan to be a major deal and hasn't for a very long time.

No. Hogan is great on the mic, but cutting a promo and being a commentator are night and day. If they were going to bring him back, I think he would work as a face general manager. But he doesn't have the right personality for a commentator.

If he truly is cleaned up and can handle life on the road again, I think Scott Hall would be an GREAT color commentator. There's a few vids of him on YouTube doing commentary of matches he's watching, the guy is genuinely witty and funny.

the last thing I want to hear is "What a suplex brother", "That body slam reminds me when I picked up 700 lbs Andre the Giant at Wrestlemania 3 brother"

and not mention the gaffes I can imagine... go youtube a promo between Hogan and Abyss...he completely unintentionally buries Abyss.

There are many other legends they should choose before Hogan. Heyman, Nash, Hall to name a few. Hell, even Jake Roberts would be great. There are current main eventers that could be great in 20 years, Daniel Bryan and CM Punk.

Hogan would view commentary below him.

Commentary? I dunno...unless it were guest appearances. Not a weekly deal.

What MIGHT be great is for him to be a surprise part of the power struggle between HHH and Vince, if that ever materializes. They could play on the notions that Hulk is a power hungry control grabber and involve him in that manner. He & HHH could have some sort of burial face-off (to satisfy all of the IWC who insist that these two men's only intention to self-promote).

No matches. Maybe a physical confrontation. Maybe not. Maybe it could lead to Sting showing up at some juncture.

Who knows. Maybe these are all terrible ideas.

What about GM, in a limited role? I think that could be good. It would be good to have Hogan around WWE before he really kicks the bucket professionally...then again, I don't miss him at all in the E, so who knows?

At this stage in Hogan's career, who really knows? Whatever role he could have in WWE that doesn't include him messing himself up anymore than he already has, I'm all for. I personally think that Hogan should host WWE Legends segments on their Classics on Demand Channel. That would preclude him from being overexposed.

But on commentary I don't think he'd be any better or worse than some people at the table.

I think he would be AWFUL in commentary. Not just hearing the word "brother" in every sentence, but hearing him talk about himself so much. He brought nothing to TNA. Granted his debut week was great for ratings but soon after the ratings plummeted. WWE has more than enough capable commentators to do the job. as far as people mentioning being GM? have they not seen him as TNA GM that last few years? awful. A GM isn't needed on either Raw or Smackdown, I would prefer a nearly invisible WWE President like Jack Tunney who would rarely appear, and let the wrestlers do their thing without interference. I see no role for Hogan in WWE, not behind the mic, behind the scenes, or even in the ring (let's hope we never see cena vs Hogan). WWE doesn't need Hogan, Hogan needs WWE. WWE has benefited greatly without him all these years.

I don't think so. I can't always understand everything when he talks anyway because he sort of mumbles.
I honestly don't know what Hogans role in wrestling could be if its not actually being in the ring.
The TNA general manager type thing doesn't do it for me either.

If I was vince McMahon or Dixie carter I would just use him to promote things, to stand there and go, "buy this brother, Order this ppv, get this game, I'm in it" things like that.

he should make a claymation celebrity wrestling thing like celebrity death match and have himself as a character in that, sort of as the ultimate challenge.

There's no way he would work as a full time commentator. If he was at the announcing table the whole night the fans would not be able to focus on whats going on in the ring. The fans would be chanting for him all night long and expecting him to get involved in the action in the ring.
If he does return to WWE it will probably be nothing more than a legends contract. He might be good for making sporadic appearances and cutting a few promos and doing some PR stuff.

Hogan being a commentator for WWE could be an interesting route worth looking into. If he came back to WWE then he would need to be used in a role where he isn't working any big matches. That narrows it down to GM, a manager of a wrestler, or announcing. He'd certainly be better than Lawler. It's been a very long time since I last enjoyed Lawler's announcing on Raw, and that is likely where Hogan would be if he joined an announcing team. His insight on the matches could be interesting and someone of his legendary status putting wrestlers over verbally could benefit them. Fans of Hogan from back in the day might recognize him too and if they happen to flip through the channel they might stick around out of nostalgia just from hearing him talking about a match.

There is one major downside to this. JBL could be getting demoted if Hogan joins the announcing team. They won't get rid of Lawler, so Hogan would be joining either the Raw or Smackdown announcing team. Where would this leave JBL then? He's much better than Lawler but we all know he would lose his spot as an announcer before Lawler does. As long as they'd have a backup plan in mind for JBL then I would support giving Hogan a try as an announcer. It's something new. There would also need to be some type of deal in place before he starts though, Raw is live and it could be risky with Hogan being in a speaking role all evening if he joins the Raw team instead of the Smackdown team. I'm sure they could work out all the details and if it does not work then he could be GM or something instead. At the very least it's worth a try.

I am replying before reading any posts aside from the title of the thread.

Absolutely not. It would be horrible. First off, he couldn't call a match or do play by play in any type of interesting manner. Every three seconds would be 'brother' this and brother that. He could never even verbally put over anyone else higher then himself. If he were to try and work out of character of hulk and just be terry bolea as he's done if a very few shoot interviews, it might be interesting for a couple of matches, but his ego wouldn't let him do that. he could never convincingly talk some one else up as either a heel or face announcer, since he'd spend most of the time talking about himself and what he did in the past.

If they hired him for this role, then you know its time to have the entire McMahon family(with hhh) and all members of creative/talent relations commited and throw away the key to the asylum.
