I was inspired to make this post by a debate in the spam section earlier, and I figured instead of spamming up the forums with yet ANOTHER Zack Ryder thread, I would make another post in here, since it's a similar topic.
Why Zack Ryder's character can work.
I have heard from many that Zack Ryder has the tools to succeed, but his character could never work. Let me tell you why I think it can.
First and foremost, wrestling is an entertainment business. It may be about wrestling in the ring, but it is meant to entertain you. We have had such characters as clowns, hockey players, and zombies, and in recent history rappers, gangstas, boogeymen, and a not-so subtly portrayed mentally ******ed character. Now, with the exception of the Boogeyman, all these characters are based off a real-life counterpart. Exaggerated, maybe, but based off a real-life counterpart. Now, wrestling is all about over-the-top characters, suspension of disbelief, and escaping reality. But it's fun for those characters to be relate-able to real life, but still a fun way to escape reality. Now, I'm sure we all know the goofy clubbing douche who is wildly popular and gets all the girls and the like. But can they be serious, intense? Yes. Which is why if Ryder was built up with a few mid-card wins, with more intensity while still retaining the character he has to a degree, he could be successful. Besides, if a character like Eugene, who was portrayed as a person with special needs, so to say, could get over through working hard and getting wins, why can't Ryder? I mean, he isn't less serious than a character like Eugene, he just has to be built right. He has potential, but it has to be built by creative right. It's clear the fans care about him as there are signs, YouTube videos, pops, and sold out merchandise to prove it. But if he isn't built to be serious, he can't be.
I'm not saying anyone can work with any gimmick, as it's not true. Cena couldn't be built with a goofy gimmick, as it's not his style. But being serious isn't Ryder's style, the gimmiock he has now fits him, just like Mark Callaway is good with The Undertaker, Glen Jacobs is with Kane, Paul Levesque is good with Triple H, and John Cena is good just being himself. Matthew Cardona is tailor made for his gimmick as Zack Ryder, but Ryder just has to be built right. His character can work, it's just a matter of booking.
