Why Do You Like Wrestling?

Richard Blonoff

Make America Rassle Again
This seems like a pretty easy question, but I often find myself struggling with it. Why do I enjoy wrestling? I feel there isn't a simple answer, at least not one I can find words for.

So I'm curious, why do you enjoy wrestling?

I started watching in 2000 so it's all been downhill for me since I started watching but you sill get moments. The Rock returning in 2011 got my eye on the product and then Lesnars return for me following again. The Shield kept me hooked and now I follow for the Main event scene.

I like the big matches that you only get a few times a year. If someone has done a hot promo I'll check it out. I like the larger than life spectacle at the moment so I've been loving Reigns vs Strouman and Lesnar vs Joe.

It's fun as hell.

Even if the show is not good at all, there almost always seems to be at least one good moment of it that sticks with you.

When I saw this question my first thought was, "Um... why the fuck do I like wrestling?"

Honestly, I think it's a combination of things. I first started watching in 1995/96 and really fell in love with the WWF in 1998. From then on it's been almost a force of habit. I'm also a mark for a few wrestlers and I'm brought back weekly because I'm legitimately invested in their futures. And, this site. I enjoy discussing what's going on with other intelligent/passionate fans; I'm not sure how often I'd be watching if it weren't for these forums to be honest.

And lastly, as much as I complain about some things, I enjoy it. If I didn't gain some sense of enjoyment out of watching, I obviously wouldn't be watching and I think that goes for everybody, no matter how ardently some wrestling fans may deny it.

For me it is a lot of the stuff that makes it into a show. I like promos more than the actual matches 90% of the time.... I love the entrances, pyro, heels VS faces dynamic, and then when we get a great match it's all the better. Some of is out of habit, seeing as though I have been watching since before Raw even existed. Mondays are wrestling nights, always will be. It's a bit of an escape from reality at times and I also enjoy seeing what other fans think on sites like this.

Larger than life characters flying around beating the shit out of each, typically in a good vs. evil story, it's the same basic reason I love comics, video games, & most of the movies & tv shows I watch, except wrestling never ends, there's no season finales (well, with the exception of Lucha Underground), no off season, it just keeps going year round.

Same reason I liked the sound of somebody yelling "Fight!" way back in school and a crowd would run to see the action, except this one is a 15 to 20 minute version of a fight with theatrics, fireworks, entrance music and moves that defy reality in a real fight. I watch for the entertainment of it all, the exaggerated personalities, the backstabbing politics, the expert smacktalking the competitors will do towards each other and the presentation. It's an art form in a poetically violent fashion.

There's always that one story in all of wrestling that gets you hooked. To me right now is Kenny Omega and Kazuchika Okada. I don't oversell those matches, not by a long shot, but I do like that rivalry going 1 for Okada and a draw some months later. It shows improvement in Omega's character and kayfabe abilities and I am quite looking forward for the third bout. Somehow they made it personal without talking 1/4 of WWE rivalries.

I'm also into the guys in 205 Live. I don't watch the show, but when they come on Raw I usually dig their matches because the crowd is so silent, that I am waiting to see them getting won over by the wrestlers. It's hard when there's no build up so that makes it interesting.

Overall I enjoy wrestling for the stories much more than for the action.
