What was the point of Edge's heel turn?

i prefer Edge as a heel...as a face he was okay at first cuz it was a feel good moment....but then the spear chants....the only point of him being face was to get revenge on jericho for their past beef....once that was over there was no need for him to be face.......hes better as a heel.....i just hope with Edge and jericho on raw sheamus will get a fair shake cuz hes been really progressing with his triple h feud....Edge has returned as (somewhat) the Rated R superstar....rather than being the PG superstar with the spear chants....

I didn't like the heel turn so much. Watch Smackdown 30/4, and it's basically a fucking Russo swerve. That they ignored the history of the Attitude Era and Edge and Christian as brothers also disapointed me. But I think the worst thing was the whole "na, na, na, na, hey, hey, goodbye". God that was so corny.

He may not have had the old crazed look but he still let loose a cocky smile and he was known for that too. I hope tomorrow night answers this question because if he's a heel again then WWE just pulled a Bret Hart WCW.

Lets count the reasons.

Batista is leaving, leaving a hole for the show's main antagonist.

Edge is better as a heel, it is were he has excelled the most

Christian is over as blowjobs, so it makes sense to have him be the face in the eventual showdown.

To further push Orton as the top face. They never quite got to do that Rated RKO feud, and Edge is a heat magnet. He will get Orton over even MORE.

Makes all the sense in the world.

I won't hold my breath for this. Last year definitely. Summerslam is possible but they've never had a backstage segment in the 14 months since Christian returned. They should've had something small to plant the seeds and make people want more.

Do you watch SmackDown? they sorta kinda had a huge segment dedicated to setting it up, as well as other people talking about it happening in the future. About 25% of the show was used setting it up. Jus sayin.

I guess that they realized that Edge wasn't getting anywhere with being babyface, they experimented with the idea but it flopped and now since they have Christian, someone who is very similiar to Edge is many ways and is over with the crowd, they didn't need Edge to be babyface anymore

hey at least they tried, now we don't have wonder if Edge would be a good babyface or not, he's clearly not

I missed it this week. Sometimes the DVR overlaps recordings and it...never mind. What does "kinda sorta" set it up mean? I really want to know. This could be feud of the year stuff.

As in, totally directly, set it up.

Not the thread to discuss such things though.

It was all but used as a vehicle to make Edge's heel turn entirely legit and right out there.

So as I said, given all the variables, this is absolutely the right thing to do with his character

This is one of the moments where you have no idea what will happen.
One hand, Edge might be staking his claim to the WWE Championship, and doing that would have to take out the competition e.g. Randy Orton.
Or, if it showed on Smackdown, Christain brought out the 'Truth' out of Edge, Saying that he's been puppeting the fans, then got booed out of the arena. All in all, you just have to watch RAW on monday, because its the only way to know...Im Just Sayin...

I think its pretty simple...Edge is like Ric Flair. He's a much better heel than he is face and the fans like him more in that role. I don't think its so much because of Orton's face turn because I think in the long term Orton will fall under the tweener role. The one thing that drives me nuts about the WWE right now is that there are no real surprises. Edge turning doesn't really show anyone does it? Show turning face doesn't shock you either. Now Cena...that's a turn that would make people tune in.

The fans will still cheer for Edge even if he is a heel. Him as a total face just doesn't seem right. Take away his gimmick and the guy still looks too creepy to be a face. He's just more suited as a hell it seems and I guess the switch was made since it really looks like the end for Batista soon.

i think was a panic move by WWE. Ok HHH is gonna be gone for a bit, HBK is retired. So, lets over stack RAW, it's only a 2 hour show, come on! And turn EDGE heel, because he's so much better heel. I don't know if thats what they are thinking. Orton does have this Stone Cold 2.0 thing going on right now. So i don't think they wanna ruin that. We'll see tonight on RAW

They had a 2min backstage segment at Backlash 2009.

Even though I like Edge as a heel, this comes across as kinda desperate. As a face he could have feuded with the likes of Sheamus or upper midcarders like The Miz. He could have even reunited with Randy Orton and feuded as a tag team against 'The Ego-maniacs,' continuing his feud with Jericho in the process. But now, no. He is heel again and having what seems like a rushed feud with Orton, something that could have been Wrestlemania worthy. And where does he go after this? HHH is out, and I will give up on Raw if he is ever in the same ring as Cena again.
Now we have an extremely heel-top-heavy show, and the shock value has already warn off. Not a good idea, at all.

I really don't get this one...

You've built up Edge as a face for the last two months since his return at the Rumble. You've put him over Jericho less than 24 hours ago. And then, his first night as a member of the Raw roster, you turn him heel by having him screw Orton?

I mean, I understand that with Orton turning face there is one less heel on the roster. But the fact is, with Sheamus being built up rather well the last few months, and Jericho being drafted to Raw, there was no need to do this.

I think they made a big mistake on this one.

It's pretty simple why they did this, and Edge even mentioned why in his promo. The fans didn't buy into his face turn. Everyone was expecting monster pops and sold-out arenas all chanting 'Spear'. Instead, the fans didn't get behind it, the momentum from his return had gone, so what do you do when the fans aren't cheering a babyface who has been the most over heel in the company? You switch him back.

It makes perfect sense the way they did it. You could tell at the end of the Extreme Rules PPV that Edge was going to be turning soon. He had his old crazed persona back. He said he manipulated the crowd to like him and now he's turned on them again. That fits Edge's character. He's back in the role he was born to play and can more than cope with Batista, Jericho, Sheamus and Miz competing with him.
