Based on a best-selling novel and brought to life by suspenseful storyteller M. Night Shyamalan ("The Sixth Sense"), WAYWARD PINES is an intense, mind-bending 10-episode thriller starring Academy Award nominee Matt Dillon ("Crash") as a Secret Service agent on a mission to find two missing federal agents in the bucolic town of Wayward Pines, ID. Every step closer to the truth makes him question if he will ever get out of Wayward Pines alive. The all-star cast also includes Academy and Emmy Award winner Melissa Leo ("The Fighter"), Academy Award nominee Terrence Howard ("Crash," "Hustle & Flow"), Carla Gugino ("Entourage"), Shannyn Sossamon ("How to Make It in America"), Toby Jones (the "Harry Potter" franchise) and Academy Award and Emmy Award nominee Juliette Lewis ("Cape Fear").
The series premiered last Thursday, and after two episodes I'm hooked. Hopefully, Wayward Pines will maintain its momentum as an ominous, mysterious, and thought-provoking mystery/thriller series.
I was kind of surprised they killed off Juliette Lewis’s character in the second episode. Beverly was in the mix for one of the major characters on the show, so it’s easy to jump to the foregone conclusion for Beverly having a long run to the season finale.
I know Wayward Pines is based on a book, and I guess M. Night Shyamalan’s name is the main reason for this, but I can see a few similarities between WP and The Village. You know, brainwashed residents living in a secluded town with dark secrets, and going beyond the wall (or into the woods for The Village) is forbidden, because you’re walking into a deathtrap, if you cross the off-limits line.
As far as the casting goes, I won’t go as far as perfect, but I don’t see any real problems. Ethan Burke is tailor-made for Matt Dillon, Melissa Leo is a nice fit for the perky and nutty nurse character, and I don’t have any real complaints for Terrence Howard as the town sheriff.
Is anyone else watching or interested in Wayward Pines?
