Wade Barrett's Road to Wrestlemania 28
At Wrestlemania 27, after weeks and weeks of beatdowns and tension, Wade Barrett defeated the Big Show and after that, the Corre brutally attacked The Big Show to the point where he wasn't moving. As a result Big Show had to be helped out of the ring by trainers and would be shelved for an indefinite amount of time.
That Friday, April 8, after Wrestlemania, Wade Barrett bragged and boasted about how much he and the Corre put the Big Show out. This gets him tons and tons of heat. He was going on and on about this. Then he said he was turning his sights to the World Heavyweight Championship and that later that night, he was going to win the Fatal Four Way Number One Contender's Match between Kane, Drew McIntyre, himself and Alberto Del Rio- who failed to capture the strap at Wrestlemania.
But Wade Barrett would have to wait a little longer. Drew McIntyre became the #1 contender to the World Heavyweight Championship and would face Edge at Extreme Rules. Wade Barrett shook his head in disbelief. He was certain it was going to be his time.
The very next week, Kofi Kingston successfully defended the Intercontinental Title against Cody Rhodes. After that match, Barrett snuck from the crowd and attacked Kofi Kingston from behind. The Corre was not there with him. He then ambushed Kingston against the steel post and hit the Wasteland on Kofi. He then got on the mic: If I can't have the World Heavyweight Championship, I want to have the next best thing. I am challenging you to a match at Extreme Rules for the Intercontinental Championship. Don't worry, I don't need The Corre at ringside.
April 22nd, Barrett vs. Trent Barreta is a squash match. Barrett: You see Kofi. Tonight, I dragged little Trent Barreta around like a rag doll. That is what is gonna happen at Extreme Rules when I become the New Intercontinental Champion. Only this beating tonight won't even be a fraction of what you will get on May 1st.
Barreta really sold the beatdown. Meanwhile, Kofi faced off against new Smackdown draftee Ted DiBiase. It was a really good match and DiBiase looked focused without Maryse; but in the end it wasn't enough as he was met with the Boom Drop and Trouble in Paradise as Kofi win with a three count. He then made it official: So it seems Wade Barrett wants my Intercontinental Championship. Corre or no Corre it doesn't matter. I will retain my Intercontinental Championship at Extreme Rules.
April 29- With Yoshi Tatsu coming to Smackdown during the Supplemental Draft, he took on Barrett. Once again though, Wade prevailed in a squash match and won in pretty convincing fashion. Once again Kofi had another good match. This time it was with another Supplemental Draftee in Zack Ryder. Kofi won, but Ryder looked good as well. After that as Kofi was celebrating, out of nowhere Wade came from behind and ambushed him, beating him down with fists of fury. He sent Kofi flying into the ring post. On the outside, he took Kofi's arm and slammed it against the post. Most sinister perhaps was the fact that Barrett took apart the steel steps and hit the Wasteland to Kofi on the steel steps. He then held up the IC title, smirking and receiving oodles and oodles of boos galore.
Extreme Rules- Wade Barrett vs. Kofi Kingston for the IC Title. The Corre wanted to come out there; but he said he wanted to win this himself. "Need I remind you, we're all equals?" He told them, "We all have the same ability and all are capable of doing exactly what I am going to do tonight. Once I win the title tonight, we'll all go out and celebrate."
The match was pretty good. It lasted about 15-20 minutes. Kofi carried Barrett for most of the match. He got the crowd going hot and was full of energy. Barrett was working as a brawler and tried to do everything to physically expose Kofi, such as running him against the steel post and the barricade. Kofi did a really good job of selling the beatdown but also gave everything he had and battled back with some high flying moves and a couple of drop kicks. He took Wade Barrett to his limit. The crowd was chanting Kofi's name and was warming up for the Boom Drop; but Wade got out of the way and Kofi landed wrong and sprained a muscle. Wade took advantage of this and hit the Wasteland. 1-2-3. Winner and new IC Champ: Wade Barrett. Barrett then cut a promo.
Barrett: I did exactly what I said I was going to do. I am now the new Intercontinetal Champion. Think of all of the greats who have held this championship: Tito Santana, Greg Valentine, Randy Savage, Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock and many more. All great Intercontinental Champions; but believe me when I say this: I am going to become the greatest Intercontinental Champion who ever lived and the only way you will take this championship from me is from my cold, dead hands.
On May 6th, Barrett is in his first Smackdown and successfully defended the IC Title in a rematch against Kofi, who definitely was worn down and didn't put up as much of a fight this time. The Corre then came in the ring to celebrate.
Barrett once again got on the mic: What you people are witnessing are all equals. All of us epitomize greatness. All of us are going to be amongst the greatest in the history of this business. Teddy long may be the General Manager; but for years to come, The Corre will run Smackdown and if Teddy doesn't like then what is he going to about it? He can try but he will fail. We are changing Friday Nights. We are going to do it in style and there is no one who can take us. Absolutely nobody. Step up to the plate if you wish; but you will just strike out. You people can boo your hearts out; but you ever see anything this great in your lives ever again.
On the May 13th edition of Smackdown, Teddy Long opened the show in his office: So, The Corre thinks they can bully their way around here? Not if I have something to say. Tonight will be an eight man tag match in which the Corre will take on Rey Mysterio, the World's Largest Athelete The Big Show, The World Heavyweight Champion- the Rated R Superstar Edge...and THE UNDERTAKER!!! And if the Corre loses, they will disband or they will all be fired! Feel dat playa! Holla, Holla Holla!
The Corre came out during the main event. The Big Show then came out. Followed by Rey. Followed by Edge and then the Undertaker. This lasted 20-25 minutes. Some good wrestling between Gabriel and Mysterio, Slater and Edge was ok and Zeke and Big Show had unfinished business. Zeke once again lifted the Big Show in a scoop slam; but he kicked out at two. Barrett then got tagged in and tried pulling Big Show away from making the hot tag; but Big Show pushed him off with his boot and made the hot tag to the Undertaker. You could cut the tension with a knife as the psychology was amazing. Knowing how the Deadman isn't in the shape as he once was Barrett did everything he could to pummel him.
Just then, a brawl took place outside with Show, Edge and Mysterio taking on the other Corre members. The ref got distracted and tried to tell them outside to break it up and get back in the ring. Taker then turned around was greeted with a thud as Barrett hit him with the IC belt. The ref did not see it and Barrett lifted him up for the Wasteland for the pin and thus keeping the Corre in tact.
Barrett then closed the show with another promo: One more pinfall victory for the Intercontinental Champion and his equals. This isn't the last time you will see the Corre.
He then bent down below to a laid out Taker in the middle of the ring: And Deadman, this isn't the last time you and I face each other in the ring. Just remember: it's all part of the bigger picture.
Suffering from last week's attacks, Undertaker was not there on the May 20th edition of Smackdown and Wade Barrett spoke: I am issuing an open challenge to anyone in the back who thinks they could take this Intercontinental Championship from me. Anybody at all? All you have to do is come to the ring and I will put my Intercontinental Title on the line this Sunday at Over the Limit.
Accepting Barrett's challenge? The Masterpiece, Chris Masters: You're on Wade. In two days, that IC title is coming with me.
Ezekiel Jackson squashed JTG, meanwhile Evan Bourne, one of the Smackdown Draft Picks in the regular lottery, was talking backstage with Yoshi Tatsu: You know, our styles are very much alike and I have a great deal of respect for you and you seem to respect me. How would you like it if we started teaming together a little bit?
Tatsu: Yes, that would be fine.
In perfect timing, they are greated by the tag team champions Slater and Gabriel. Slater: Isn't that nice? You're teaming together. You'll have to earn your shot against Justin Gabriel and the One Man Rock Band Heath Slater. Gabriel: Even then, when you do, we'll still reign supreme over you.
So some tension in the air. A promo ends Friday Night Smackdown with a promo that the Undertaker will answer Wade Barrett this Sunday at Over the Limit.
So it's Over the Limit, May 22nd. And as the Corre are out on their way to the ring, the Undertaker is being attacked backstage by somebody whose face no one can see. No one knows who it is or why it's happening. It doesn't seem to faze the Corre whatsoever.
Barrett had an easy retain against Chris Masters. The match went about eight or nine minutes. Masters did get some offense in and applied the Masterlock until Barrett broke it. He managed to escape free of it and with little to no help from his equals, Barrett won by hitting Wasteland on Masters to hit the I.C. belt.
But who attacked the Undertaker? And why? How long will he be out?
