The Trip Hop Thread

Getting Noticed By Management
Fooled you didn't I? In all seriousness I've been getting back big into some Trip Hop with the discovery of some new artists that I had previously not heard of. For those that don't know, Trip Hop is a crazy mix of a lot of genres, ranging from electronic music, R&B, and hip hop. The genre itself is difficult to really pin down as one specific genre or the other, as the artists within Trip Hop have their own take on Trip Hop but using a down tempo is prevalent within all of their music.

So with that in mind, I want to open the thread up, make some suggestions etc, you know the drill. I would start with the likes of Portishead or Massive Attack, but those two are so well known I'll let someone else handle it. Instead I"ll start with a new artist I found, which really they aren't even new per say.

Morcheeba - Damn, how the hell did I miss them? Female vocals with some dope beats plus some real chill vibe = outstanding. Morcheeba has a lot of folk and pop influences mixed in with the usual trip hop sound, which ends up making them unique. The first album of theirs I heard was "Blood Like Lemonade" which is actually the newest album they've released. Reading into it here their album "Big Calm" is arguably their best to date and considered a trip hop classic. I would recommend "Blood Like Lemonade" if you enjoy some real chill music. It reminds me almost of sitting back with a joint in hand and just letting the cool night vibes run through your body. Definitely check it out.

By all means, if you're into trip hop, share some of your favorite artists here and we can discuss said artists.

Trip-Hop! I love it. Though I'm not as knowledgeable in the trip hop field as I am in most other areas of electronic music, I still have a few golden nuggets I'm willing to toss into the bucket.

I've heard my fair share of Trip Hop over the years, but not until a couple of years ago did I really understand the genre, that stretches along the lines of deep electronic music to high energy Acid Jazz and everything that could possibly fit between.

BlockHead was one of the first Trip Hop artist to really catch my ear, I had a friend who was really into Aesop Rock a couple years back, and I was really feeling some of the songs like Nightlight, Forest Crunk, None Shall Pass ect. ect. Though I was really feeling the beats more than anything, and after a little research I found out that BlockHead was producing beats for Aesop Rock, and that's where I started my journey into the world of Trip Hop. Here are a few of the songs that really got me going.

Ty, Morcheeba has graced my late night radio station a few times, made for some excellent late night smoke sessions.

I've got a few more Trip Hop rounds in the chamber, I'll be sure to stop by and share some more.

Blockhead is definitely a good trip hop group to check out. I got a good amount of their material downloaded. They're not quite up on my favorites list but still very good.

Now moving on, I just found this group out, called Sound Tribe Sector 9 or STS9 for short. Now they're not strictly trip hop but rather they're more of an experimental band that includes electro, hip hop, rock, jazz, etc. They do have a sound however that sounds similar to trip hop so I'm going to include them in this thread. They're infamous for their live performances, and searching for them on Youtube brings up a ton of awesome performances so definitely check them out. As far as their studio albums, I've started listening to Peaceblaster and it's definitely a sonic trip through your aura and mind.

I highly recommend the Peaceblaster album as it's my favorite at the moment. Another album of theirs I will be checking out shortly is called Ad Explorata, as well as the Peaceblaster The New Orleans Make It Right Remixes.

I've been a big fan of STS9 for a few years now, I was originally introduced to their music back when they where more of an electronic jam band. Peaceblaster is a stellar album, and their albums Artifacts and Ad Explorata are probably most similar to Peaceblaster. The Peaceblaster Remix album is a treat as well, some of the best electronic artists remixing already strong tracks.

Here is my favorite off peaceblaster.

This one is off Ad Explorata.

and here is one from the remix album, remixed by Pretty Lights.

and speaking of Pretty Lights, their all about the music. Don't believe me, go check their website, ALL of their music is FREE. I'm always reluctant with free stuff, especially music; but just give it a listen and you'll think you've come across the greatest music deal ever.

Here's a couple tracks from Pretty Lights.

So after giving those tracks a listen again, this definitely fits somewhere into the Trip-Hop genre, More Important than Michael Jordan is one of the more savage tunes I've heard, and probably the best FREE music EVA.

I've got another classic Trip-Hop track that I will release to reek havoc amongst the masses. I heard this one on the Comcast music channel a couple years back, and it instantly became a favorite of mine.

That's it for now, but you can look forward to my Nightmares on Wax post that I will be making later in this very thread.

Killin' time today, so it looks like I'll be buffering up the Trip-Hop thread twice in one day.

This is another artist I discovered while listening to the Comcast Sounds of the Season music channel, I hate their fucking service, but the music channel makes amends. Onto the music, the Artist is Nightmares on Wax, and they're definitely on the jazzy side of Trip-Hop. I was immediately hooked on their album Smokers Delight, the title says it all.

Here are few tracks off Smokers Delight.

Here's a couple more off the album Though So... I've walked the Streets of San Francisco a couple times to this CD and it was fucking delightful.

I thought I'd swing by on this glorious Saturday mornings and drop off a few inspirational nuggets of pure Trip-Hop bliss. I thought I'd mix it up this morning, giving you multiple artists, with just one track from said artists. Every song will come directly from my musical library, no bullshit.

First I'm going to start off with a track from Amon Tobin, I only recently started listening to Amon Tobin after I was directed in his direction from one of the many online radio sites. Apparently, he does a little side work with soundtracks for movies and video games, so you may find his sound a bit familiar, but probably not.

Now for a little Flying Lotus, I'm sure there are a few of you out there who are familiar with Flying Lotus, if for no other reason than hearing his music in between shows on Cartoon Network. Though he has taken quite a few big steps forward since his beginning on Adult Swim. Now I could easily give you guys a FlyLo song that you've heard before, but I will opt to give you a taste off his new album.

Now I'll make an easy jump from FlyLo to Prefuse 73, what great about going from FlyLo to Prefuse is the fact that Prefuse 73 became a bit of a mentor to FlyLo, and you can hear the influences; but not just the influence that Prefuse had on FlyLo, but the reverse as well. Nothing like to good electronic artists feeding off each others skills.

On to my grand finally, and to stay extremely on topic, I will link another artist to the Prefuse 73 triangle of musical greatness. This final artist goes by the name Gaslamp Killer, referring to the San Diego Gas Lamp District(I'm a Padre/Charger fan, no slipping San Diego info by me). Funny thing is I got this CD before either Prefuse 73 or Flying Lotus, though the all rest happily in my library now.

I'll go through my library and pick out some more Trip-Hop artist for everyone's future listening pleasure. Enjoy.
