Seeing as we are nearly upon the 25th Anniversary of WWE Survivor Series what better way to celebrate (I joke) than to look back over the past year at what has happened and look at the top 10 PPV's, Superstars and top 5 moments in my opinion and by all means your's by commenting.
My Top 10 PPV's
Missing out is Over the Limit 2011 which is by far one of the worst PPV's over the last few years. At times I had changed the channel forgetting i'd actually wanted to watch it. And also missing out is WWE Captiol Punishment which had a lame concept and outcome with Cena winning thanks to Lil Jimmy. I sometimes wonder how they managed to save R-Truth's character after that.
10 - WWE TLC The card looked suprisingly fresh and gave a new look to what was a decreasing number of talented guys in the roster. A terrific Fatal 4 Way Ladder Match featuring Edge, Rey Mysterio, Alberto Del Rio and Kane was enough to get it at least under ranking 5 but then the other 2 just meaningless and average matches on the main-card really brang this down. John Cena defeated Wade Barrett in the main event in a Chairs Match for no contract, no title just simply payback whilst Miz defeated Randy Orton in a strange tables match with the appearance of then rookie Alex Riley allowing Miz to win.
9 - WWE Hell in a Cell Random card, Random timing (actually no timing) and random outcomes. Where do WWE get the thought that we would be willing to fork out another load of money on a PPV 2 weeks after the previous one? Not only that, you book your main event as a Triple Threat WWE Title Hell in a Cell match just to squeeze every dime but than you do the must strangest things and have Alberto Del Rio win back the WWE Title, 2 weeks after losing it. It felt thrown together last minute but still felt better than the garbage at Over the Limit. This and TLC are really close but this outshines it thanks to Orton/Henry's Cell match. Do they actually use the Cell or need the Cell anymore?
8 - WWE Night of Champions This had the potential of knocking Summerslam of its perch with its stellar main event announced. When people heard CM Punk was taking on Triple H in the main event they jumped in anticipation but when it came you were left scratching your head, thanks once again to the booking. The main event, a NoDQ match was more like a TNA match (You know with the has-been marching in and making an impact and a young tag team revolting) that's exactly what you got here except more unorganised and less impactful. The outcome of which was HHH nailing Punk with the Pedigree for the win but AwesomeTruth and Nash had inteferred in what is a running storyline that has either stopped or is slowly dying. Also Cena beat Del Rio..... For NO REASON because he loses the title in 2 weeks time and Mark Henry finally became World Champion thus the reason why it ranks actually well.
7 - WWE Vengeance I feel like i'm going in circles. Typing this makes me see how much WWE do not change their matches/storylines. Once again Triple H and Punk were in action but this time teaming up against Awesome Truth to try and stop the evil revolts from continuing to cause havoc. Now, did it never cross a guy who has had 13 title reigns in his career who was attacked at the previous PPV by Kevin Nash that he was going to not appear? He'd suddenly been killed or something? Eh, maybe but we all knew that Nash was going to attack and this time he attacked HHH in what was probably the best match of the night. Ziggler competed in 2 matches thankfully he was on his game and the two title matches, Cena/Del Rio which led to Del Rio succesfully defending and Henry/Big Show which led to the ring succesfully (well.... casually collapsing) were actually above average. In fact I enjoyed Henry vs Big Show so much that I might regret saying this but I don't mind seeing them at Survivor Series, Ok I do. I probably will regret ranking this so fairly too.
6 - WWE SummerslamWhat has happened to this event? I used to be so excited every night being from the UK staying up in the Summer to watch this Summer extravaganza but now its more like your average 3 hour super Raw show. I'll praise some of the booking such as Nash's shocking attack on Punk (For me Vince bitchslapping us internet fans) and Orton defeating Christian to end their long-rivalry in a tremendous fashion but the card was thrown together last minute and felt so one-dimesional. It surrounded Cena/Punk and when that happens it doesn't pay off. It wasn't as good as the match everybody remembers and this is perhaps the match everyone will forget. I know I won't be forgetting seeing Del Rio cashing in and my mind suddenly commit suicide as to why WWE had him cash in so fast. It was okay though. They could have booked something oh so better. Cena vs Del Rio and keep Punk off of TV for a while but no jump the gun we'll have an undisputed rivalry.... lame.
5 - WWE Extreme Rules The level of wrestling was actually good and the outcomes apart from perhaps the main event were fresh. Christian finally wins the World Title after waiting so long. Nice moment with Edge but John Cena somehow once again manages to come out of a PPV with the WWE Title strapped around his waist. One thing I will say, thank god he won so he could declare the news we all celebrated the day afterward. Rest of the event was average yet simple.
4 - WWE Royal Rumble I absolutely love Royal Rumble's so when this event comes up I literally get excited. This year was unprecedented, for the first time 40 men in the battle royal for the chance to headline Mania. Who came out on top? Alberto Del Rio. Nash and Booker T made entertaining returns but I couldn't understand the logic of having 40 of your talent if a losing challenger (Orton) still enters the match. Yes, Miz defeated Orton to retain his WWE Title whilst Edge beat Ziggler to retain his.
3 - WWE WrestleMania Had so much going for it yet just came up a little bit short of expectation. The big let-down perhaps was the way it was hosted by the returning Rock. Miz defeating Cena was a big shock and the Rock Bottom to Cena is a sight you didn't want to miss. I loved the opening contest of Edge vs Del Rio, sad to think that's Edge's last ever match. Also HHH vs Undertaker tore the house down whilst Cole and Lawler literally made it into a comedy show.
2 - WWE Elimination Chamber For me one of the most underrated events in recent memory. If you didn't watch because you thought ' Ahh same old win for Cena and retaining of titles for Mania ' than you're right but the Wrestling itself was so enthrilling. I loved both Elimination Chambers with Edge and Rey Mysterio putting on a clinic whilst Morrison ran around like Spiderman losing out to Cena. Punk was magic as always and what an event that did even better in my eyes than that of WrestleMania.
1 - WWE Money in the Bank Was it ever in doubt? This has to be the best PPV over the last 3 or so years. Punk vs Cena was something extroadinary not just for Punk's fans and himself but Cena. Cena proved to all his doubters that he has talent and whilst in his head he has a match with Rock at next years Mania, he can put his head up high and say I proved my doubters wrong with this performance. Punk was electric running off with the title and Vince literally looked pissed. Felt sooooo real yet entertaining. Both MITB matches were enjoyable especially seeing Daniel Bryan come out with the win.
Top 10 Superstars
10 - Wade Barrett I hate to say it but his career has sort of gone backwards. He was leading Nexus and expected to be WWE Champion in a matter of months but this past year has done little other than beat mid-card talent and has still not held a World Title. Looks so good on the mic and in the ring is dominant. Promising future.
9 - Zack Ryder I can't stand his marks but he has tried so hard and its finally paying off. Deserves credit for what he's done and will continue to grow in the foundations of WWE. Future US Champion maybe not Hall of Famer.
8 - R-Truth Ever since his heel turn he's had a new lease on life in WWE. His new conspiracy-obsessive persona has fans in laughter yet taking it seriously as part of storylines. Looking to continue but does he rely on his tag team partner?
7 - John Cena He for me deserves so much respect for what he has done. He worked so hard to get where he is and deserves credit for helping others such as Ryder get over. One of the nicest backstage and in the ring always smiling, will he after Survivor Series? Hmmm
6 - ChristianFinally World Champion back in April he stole the show at Extreme Rules and then turned heel on Orton. Interesting to see where he goes from here and if we see him get one more match or not.
5 - Alberto Del Rio I didn't even know whether to include him or not but than I thought of what he's accomplished. WWE Champion, Mr MITB and Royal Rumble winner. All in his debut year/s here in WWE. Impressive yet still not over as much as WWE would probably like him to be with the fans.
4 - Dolph Ziggler He's really come into his own this year both in the ring and on mic. With Vickie and Swagger he's shining and showing signs of a main-eventer. Losing all the time hopefully doesn't result in a face turn. Very talented.
3 - Cody Rhodes Current IC Champion, Rhodes can perform with any gimmick given to him, proven by him excelling in his UnDashing role. Love his strange characteristics and prescence always enjoyable to watch. Future World Champion in my eyes.
2 - Mark Henry What a year for this veteran. He used to be a comedy act but now everybody's taking him seriously. His bully gimmick is doing wonders for him and some may argue its been his year.
1 - But that my friends goes to the year of Punk. Yes, CM Punk has got to be the best superstar since Survivor Series 2010 an event he wasn't even part of. He's just simply breathetaking and instantly becoming a legend. Hopefully gets his WWE Title at Survivor Series.
And lastly....Top 5 moments in WWE
5. Mark Henry winning the World Title and creating the Hall of Pain
4. Triple H relieving Mr.McMahon of his duties on Raw and SmackDown
3. CM Punk's insanse shoot on WWE and near legit depature from the company
2. The Rock's return and his deal with John Cena to collide at WrestleMania 28 and team up at Survivor Series
1..... John Cena turns heel at Survivor Series. Well, not quite.... the long process of a heel turn which finally comes full circle at WM 28 begins at Survivor Series when he AA's Rock at the expense of Awesome Truth.
Look chances are Cena will one day turn heel. Just got a feeling it might by this Sunday. Hope you enjoyed.
