The Technology Troubleshooting Thread

So, I tried to burn it again Sly, and the same exact results as before. This has happened with 3 out of the 4 DVDs I've attempted to burn. The first one worked perfectly, but everyone since is different. The Menus work, and I can watch the first 40 seconds of the movie before it suddenly freezes and that's it. The time still ticks away, but all I've got is a frozen picture for an hour and a half. These are all using WMV files with Windows DVD Maker. Any suggestions man? Codecs or something I need here? Should I try using a different format than WMV? Wasting these DVDs is starting to anger me.

If you can get your hands on DVD Shrink and Nero, I'd suggest that you use them. My family rarely, if ever, runs into problems with ripping and burning dvds. Dvd's work perfectly for us, complete with menus. You also have the option of forgoing the menus and extras to make more space for video quality. At my house we tend to make the kind with menus and a copy of each for movies that we particularly enjoy.

I've used DVD Shrink in the past for ripping, never for burning. Is it as easy to use as Windows Movie/DVD Maker? I'm tired as hell and am not at all in the mood for anything that will require much effort on my part, I just want to pick a nice little menu, the text on that menu, put the movie on that disc, and maybe put an MP3 to play in the background of the menu.

It's weird, the DVDs themselves work...just not the video on them. It sucks.

We tend to use Nero for the burning aspect. DVD Shrink puts it in a nice little package and Nero takes care of the new disc part. It's actually pretty easy to do. My dad didn't really explain it to me, but I've still been able to use it. All you have to do is go to Copy & Back Up, then Burn Image to Disc, then choose the files and you're done.

Greetings. Question for anyone. I'm having trouble with YouTube. I have Firefox as my browser and whenever I try to watch a video, I get this message: "Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player. Get the latest Flash player. " I've downloaded all the appropriate things and JavaScript is on.

I once had a problem like this. Try uninstalling every version of Flash Player and reinstalling.

If Sly, Ty, or anyone else could help out with a problem my computer seems to have. Upon putting a cd into the drive on my computer, the computer will immediately restart. Sometimes this can be avoided by holding shift before and after the disc is entered. The same thing happens when I try to burn a cd with itunes, but doesn't always happen when I try to burn with Nero. Any ideas on what the problem is/how to fix it?

Get into your Firefox browser. Go to the Address bar and type in "about:plugins:, without the quotation marks.

Once you're in that screen, scroll down and try to find "Shockwave Flash". Under that heading, it will tell you your version number. I think you have to have at least Version 7 (I think???) to run Youtube. If your problem hasn't been fixed, then post your version of Flash in here.

Also, search and make sure you only have one version of Flash running in your Firefox browser, sometimes Firefox may recognize an older one, even if you have a newer one installed. It happens on a problematic install of the new Flash.

Try this link, and see how it works for you. It's possible it's a power supply issue.

Alright, So I've had this problem for a very long time and I've been a little lazy to act upon it. Anyway, the problem:

My laptop's monito doesn't seem to illuminate. Meaning that when I turn it on there is no image but you can hear everything work fine. Also, if I flash a flashlight or any light source at it, you can clearly see a faint image of what's suppose to show up. Everything works properly and if I use an external monitor it works on that.

My guess on why this happend is that my laptop didn't fully shut down before I closed it up. And it sat there for at least a full day, still on. Thus, fucking something up.

The possible source of the problem is the inveter or LCD Cable. My uncle already installed a new backlight and a new screen, but that didn't work. I would like to know the true source of the problem before buying any replacement parts. Also, if I seem to be missing something.

I use a Sony VGN-N365E if that helps. It says VGN-N365E on the front right corner of my screen, but PCG-7Y2L on the back as the model code.

Thanks to anyone with advice.

I would seriously hope you've tried this already, but given the problems I solve on a daily basis, I have to ask.

Have you brightened your display from your keyboard? Usually you hold the "Fn" button and hit one of the numbers at the top of the keyboard, which has a sun icon pointing up. Have you tried this?

Yes, and of course, it didn't do anything.

The backlight has gone out on your LCD screen. The screen itself is fine, but the light that illuminates it went out. My girlfriend's laptop has done this exact same thing. At this point a repair store will probably just switch out the LCD and charge you a good chunk of change for it. If you're techie enough you could replace the backlight but I would suggest having a professional take care of that for you. Also check with Sony to see if you still have warranty but from the model number, it sounds like it's the same model as my girlfriend's so you may be out of luck on that end.

Probably a simple fix.. i'm not that good at this shit though. Hmm. Im trying to watch a movie, i'm watching it on Windows Media Player. It's a .avi file. The sound is way ahead of the video. Is there anything I can do to fix this?

I have a small question for anyone that is used to using VLC media player. This is a minor query and something that could probably be fixed given the right know-how. The problem is that every time I use VLC media player in full screen mode, two things happen that are beginning to piss me off. The first thing is pretty basic but is really annoying. Whenever I use full screen mode, my interface disappears. Now, I know that this is supposed to happen if you leave it for a few seconds without touching the mouse but mines does not reappear if I do touch it. This means that I have to exit the application from full screen if I want to skip anything.

The other thing is a bit more complicated and might not be fixable as it could just be my computer. However, I will give you the extent of the problem anyway and perhaps something can be done. The problem is that every time, I switch to full screen mode, the colour that the movie is displayed in and is instead replaced with a greenish tint. This generally lasts for a couple of minutes before switching back. It's curious but any help is appreciated.

This used to happen to me too with VLC, I simply uninstalled it and then reinstalled it and it's back to normal now.

This is probably a problem with the video file you're watching, and not VLC. Often times when you skip through a file on there the colors might get all meshed up for a second or two (the greenish tint you're talking about), but if you just skip around in the file a bit it should jump back to normal.

Hope that helps Dave.

This happens to me quite often too. I believe it's quality of the video you're watching. When this happens to me, I tend to switch over to another media player. My next choice tends to be the RealPlayer. If you have the required plug-ins on your computer it should work fine.

You might've accidentally changed an option without realizing it. Try to search for an option that will restore the video CP. If not look for a "Restore Default Settings". If neither work, go with Xfear's idea. Uninstall and Reinstall.

Sometimes
video quality can be a real bitch. This happens if the quality is too low for the player. I tried doing music videos on Windows Movie Maker and the quality was so low that all you would see was a big green blur. Try another Player or finding a program that can increase the quality.

I am assuming this is the right thread but anyway here it goes. I have an older Ipod, shits like 3 years old and now you can only hear out of the one side of the headphones. It also isn't the headphones because they're brand new and they work with everything but the ipod. I was wondering if there's a way to fix it, or should I just give up and get a new one?

It's got to be your headphones Becker, I mean unless your downloading corrupted MP3 files to put on there or something, but if audio is only coming out of one ear, it has to be your headphones, that's not an iPod problem.

That used to happen to me alot. Try fiddling around with the part of the headphones where you plug them in with the iPod on and see if you can get better audio that way. But yeah, definitely has to be a headphones problem man.

Yeah, most of the time it is the headphones that are the problem but I have seen times when it is the iPod that is causing the problem. However, this was a few years ago now and it was one of the earliest Nano's it happened with. Here is a question, Becker: Have you recently dropped the iPod or has it come into any harm? I ask the question because that was what happened to the Nano. My friend dropped it and damaged the headphone port. Thus, the headphones were not functioning properly. My advice would be to take it back to the store if you have an extended warranty period. Failing that, take it to someone who specialises in fixing broken technology.

Move this if it is consider spam.

Ok so for chrissy my brother got x-box live 12 month card thingy, adn previously to that we had a 1 month thing ( but that has ran out) and we used the one month thing on both of our accounts so we could both play it on both of our accounts at seperate times or both accounts could be used at the same time instead of one having to be a guest. Anyways this is the problem I have got now.

I have set up the 12 month card on my account, but now whenever i try and get my brothers account to be the 12 month as well it says code has already been use. So I was wondering if there is anyway that the 12 month thing ( that we have one of) could work on both accounts, if so how.

BTW I know alot of people prolly wont understand this but if you do understand it which will be a miracle and only don't understand a little bit, please feel free to ask.

No! There is no way of making a unique code activate over two profiles. The thing is that you will still have a Silver membership on the brother's account and Gold Membership codes are unique. This means that they can only be redeemed once and that is the profile that uses it first.

Sorry.

Oh that sucks! How come the silver membership let me use it on both accounts, but the gold wont? This just sucks, oh wells...

It is mainly to give you a taste of the Live experience. Even though the Gold Membership has run out, you still have a Silver membership. Silver Memberships are completely free and allow you to play on weekends and allow you to download some other things for cheaper to entice you to buy the Gold membership. It would make little to no sense for Microsoft to cut out everyone who did not pay for their memberships to be upgraded. They are just leaving the door open for the future.

Well I'm assuming you mean your month of gold by getting it when you first join live. Well if that's the case then you get at least two free gold accounts on your console as a trial basis. After that, everything else has to be paid for.

Personally, I say just go with the tri-monthly pay as it's a lot cheaper.
