The Sports Bar

I've never gotten why that keeps Rose out of the Hall. There are people in the Hall who have records of taking primitive PEDs, plenty more that almost certainly did, and noted garbage human beings (hai Ty Cobb).

I think MLB is particularly sensitive to gambling because of the Black Sox scandal in 1919. That's looked upon as the biggest disgrace in baseball history. That's why gambling on baseball is the ultimate sin and why that rule is so prominent in every clubhouse. It's been nearly one hundred years but it's still well known and MLB obviously never wants anything like that to happen again. Rose didn't bet against himself but MLB doesn't want any gray area so the rule is no gambling whatsoever.

I'm on the side of letting Rose in the HOF. Just trying to offer an explanation from the other point of view. I actually went to Cooperstown a few weeks ago (so awesome, I highly recommend it) and there was Pete Rose memorabilia in there so that was nice to see. I just wish he had his own plaque.

The fact that he bet on baseball changes that unfortunately.

Yes, it does. Personally, I could care less whether he goes to the HOF or not....and yes, his record in baseball certainly qualifies him.

But what about the legal aspect? What about the sanctity of the contract he signed? We expect contracts we enter into to protect us, yet we freely advise baseball to break this one.

Pete Rose didn't contractually agree to sign a lifetime ban from baseball because he's a great guy that was looking only to protect the integrity of the game......he signed because baseball had hard evidence that he did exactly what every baseball player knows not to do. He wasn't saying "I didn't know it was illegal"......he knew it was one of the biggest taboos he could commit.....and did it anyway.

So now, many people are saying to just forget the contract and let him in the Hall. From a legal standpoint, it shouldn't be as easy as that....and to this point, it hasn't been.

As well, folks are now saying that whether he bet or not shouldn't affect his eligibility to enter the Hall.....but he willingly signed the contract specifying that he was forfeiting all the rights and privileges associated with baseball .....including the Hall of Fame. The contract didn't say anything about reconsidering the issue in the future.

Lifetime means lifetime.

Yesterday Matt Kemp hit for the cycle becoming the first player in San Diego Padres history to accomplish the feat. I never thought the cycle was that big of a deal but it's hard to believe a team that's been around almost 50 years has never had a player do this. I think the Padres are also the only team in the league to have never thrown a no hitter. Maybe they'll break that streak soon too.

Jesus. I miss first the Iwakuma no hitter and now this? My fantasy team is about the only baseball I'm able to keep up with these days. Stupid life matters overriding my baseball.

Anyone think the MLB should adopt the rules concerning the divisions just like the NBA did? It's pretty much the teams with the best records get into the playoffs. So divisions are gone and it's down to conferences.

If anything I'd rather they make it more like the NFL, add two more expansion teams and make it an 8 team playoff system.

They also need to change that wildcard game to best of three instead of just one crapshoot game.

I understand that thinking. Many people want that but I haven't heard a reasonable way to make it happen. When this new system was introduced a few years ago the main objective was to put more value on winning the division. That is exactly what has happened. Now people are backpedaling. There is nothing wrong with saying we tried it and it didn't work but people still want the second wild card too. How would you set up the postseason?

It's official, Cubs are going to the playoffs! I really hope the playoff run lasts more than one day.

No worries, I'm confident that the Cubs will last more than one day. I've been saying for weeks now, the Cubs will go all the way to the World Series this season. I just hope that they have their passports in order, as they are going to need them. And they should be very pleased when things are all said and done. After all, no shame in being runner up.

And for the record, no reason to change the playoff format.

I guess it was only a matter of time before Jonathan Papelbon and Bryce Harper came to blows. I've lightened my stance a little on how big of a douche Harper is but when a royal douche like Papelbon enters the same locker room you knew eventually there would be a problem. I thought Papelbon was a free agent after this year. Glad I was mistaken about that. It's not until after next year. Theo, I know you had some success with him before and the Cubs need a closer but please stay away from this guy.

It's perfect the way it is. There was the thought of making the wildcard a 3 game series with a doubleheader, but that's the only thing that would make it even possible, as lengthening the break for the division winners is unfair to them.

As it is, you get a big advantage to winning the division and you get the 1 game playoffs that everyone loves.

I mean I know Chicago may be a yucky place, but I didn't think you needed a passport to get from Chicago to New York. And considering they'll be there for the NLCS too probably I'd say they would be good already.

Here we go again with people trying to figure out what MVP means. Can't we just end the debate of trying to define valuable and just give it to the best player? People who argue about the literal definition of valuable don't do a good job anyway. If you really want to talk value give the award to Kris Bryant. He has the number one selling jersey in MLB, helps draw a sellout crowd to his home ballpark every day, and only makes about $470,000. Sounds like a great value. MVP sounds better than Best Player Award but I don't think the V in MVP was meant to be debated so much when the award was created. Maybe I need to rethink the Cy Young Award. Instead of giving it to the best pitcher maybe we should look for the pitcher most similar to Cy Young.

Chase Utley is a piece of trash. According to the rule that nobody seems to be following, Utley should've AUTOMATICALLY BEEN OUT.
That was such a dirty play. Wasn't the first time he took out Tejada as well. No idea why the umps called him safe for that. Not only was he safe, but that play pretty much won the game for the Dodgers. Adrian Gonzalez drove in those runs for the win. Horrible.

Utley got suspended for two games anyway since that slide was undoubtedly dirty. I'm guessing we see a rule change because of this incident. What rule they'll be changing, hell if I know.

What rule makes him automatically out?

I think the slide was a little dirty but not enough to warrant a suspension.

Rule 6.01 (6) If in the umpires judgment a baserunner willfully and deliberately interferes with a batted ball (in this case utley blatently interfered with a double play) Both the batter AND the baserunner are automatically out.

Thats just a good solid play imo im no baseball expert at all but I liked it. I dont think its dirty because he didnt mean to injure Tejada it just unfortunately. When teams have a mantra of putting the team before urself this is the kind of thing they are talking about
