The Sports Bar

Well I would have preferred more success in October but the Cubs are having a pretty good November. Rookie of the Year, Manager of the Year, and Cy Young.

Just heard Derrick Rose is officially doubtful for tonight. I get it in the context of sports talk but the phrase officially doubtful kind of makes my head spin.

I like the Cubs getting John Lackey. Not sure about Ben Zobrist. Mixed feelings about Starlin Castro being traded to the Yankees.

And after signing Zack Greinke the DBacks trade for Shelby Miller. Arizona making a huge impact.

We got Starlin Castro for Adam Warren and Brendan Ryan, not a bad deal at all for us. Though I was looking forward to seeing how Refsynder would do as the everyday second baseman. Now we gotta go out and get some pitching.

My feelings went from mixed to disappointed when I found out who the Cubs got for Castro. At first I was sorry to see Castro go but knew either he or Baez, if not both, were going to move. I was looking forward to seeing what the Cubs would get in return. Since the answer is practically nothing I'm pretty upset about the deal.

And Arizona gave up the number one overall pick from the 2015 draft in the Miller deal. That was surprising.

I think they still think Refsnyder is a year away. And truth be told I expect he could be dealt too. Refsnyder was always a tier below guys like Severino and Judge, and now with 2 guys in their mid 20's up the middle they can deal Refsnyder and get a pitcher.

Albeit they did trade with Detroit, giving up reliever Justin Wilson for 2 pitching prospects. They aren't the answer for 2016 but they could be down the line in 2017 and beyond.

IF we can cut payroll down (tall order) we can.
It's easy.

Money coming off the books after 2016:
CC Sabathia: $25M ($5M buyout if his option vests so a net of $20M)
Carlos Beltran: $15M

Money coming off the books after 2017:
Mark Teixeira: $22.5M
Alex Rodriguez: $20M

After 2017 they will be down $77.5 or $82.5 Million depending on Sabathia's vesting option for 2017. Not to mention those guys are taking the spots of guys much cheaper and arguably better (Bird for Tex, Judge for Beltran, any pitcher for CC) and as such they won't need to replace them with high price guys.

Adam Warren is a very good piece. Is he an ace starter? No, but he was a good starter who was forced into the bullpen thanks to an overabundance of starters, and he was excellent there too. Considering he in just now entering arbitration, you will have him under control for 3 seasons. Brendan Ryan is an excellent glove, and in the National League he will get regular playing time as a defensive replacement/pinch hitter, a role that will suit him perfectly.

You weren't going to get a ton for Castro, being that the Cubs benched him mid season and he switched to a new position in August. Couple that with the Zobrist signing and the trade value went down.

Yankee fans (the majarity) want to win now. They don't wanna wait till those bad contracts are up. Although I do agree with you.

Maybe I'm just the typical negative sports fan. I try not to be. I must just think differently than most. Everyone is excited about the possibility of the Cubs getting Jason Heyward. I say no thank you. I know Heyward is a very good player. He has a great glove and a fantastic arm. His bat leaves something to be desired for me. I think he's been living off potential for his entire career. I don't think he's worth the ten years $200 million+ that's been talked about. That's a ridiculous contract for a guy like him. Plus the talk is the Cubs putting him in center. He's a right fielder. Guys change positions all the time but it's not always the seamless transition people think it will be.

You're right. The Cubs weren't going to get a ton for Castro but I think they could have gotten a lot more than they did. I admit I never heard of Adam Warren. When the trade was announced I heard the analysts talking him up like he was some great prospect. I decided to look him up to discover he's 28 years old and has already been in the big leagues for three years. I know 28 isn't old and it's nice he has big league experience but he's hardly the hot prospect the analysts made him out to be. The Cubs do need a reliable arm in the pen so he should fill that need but like I said, I just think they could have gotten more. Ryan doesn't do anything for me. The Cubs are already strong in the infield. There just isn't a spot for him. I know he'll come off the bench and he has a great glove but his bat is pretty much worthless. The Cubs already have other infielders to come off the bench to relieve their already strong starters.

Castro has been a work in progress for a while now but I really believe he turned a corner when he got benched. That looked to be the wake up call he needed. If you would have asked me in July if the Cubs should trade Castro I would have driven him to the airport. I was so impressed by how he turned it around after getting benched and then moving to 2B. I'd rather have the 25 year old Castro for the next four years at about $41 million than the 34 year old Zobrist for $56 million. Just a few minutes after Castro was traded the Braves traded Shelby Miller. I know Arizona gave up a lot but I wonder if the Cubs could have included Castro in a package for him. There are some desirable minor leaguers that could have been included with Castro.

Oh well. I'm not always negative. I'm happy with Lackey.

I'm just glad that the Yankees are finally getting younger. All this time I've been watching baseball, the Yankees were never the young guys. I also hope we get to play Bird and Tex together regularly. Tex is still really good defensively while Bird is getting there. Maybe moved Bird over to third or something? I don't know. I think we got a steal with the Castro trade. I didn't see this move coming at all but I'm damn glad it happened. Sure, Warren was a good arm to have, but I think we filled in the gap he left with the prospects we got in return for Justin Wilson.

One of these days I'll get used to mediocre baseball players getting ridiculous money. $90 million for Jeff Samardzija? How did this guy get to be so overrated? He gives up the most hits, most runs, and most home runs last year posting a 4.96 ERA while significantly decreasing his strike outs and he gets $90 million. He's had one good year and is 47-61 in his career. Maybe I just need to wrap my head around the idea that $90 million isn't that much in the baseball world.

To my knowledge, MLB doesn't have a salary cap does it? If so, I'm very interested to see a salary cap implemented. Would have to be higher than the NBA's own for sure because there are more players on the field in MLB.

Also, looks like the Cubs snatched up Heyward. He's reportedly getting getting 184M/8 years. Heyward is a good glove for sure but I think he's getting overpaid here. Like what was said earlier, he's living off his potential thus far.

Oh god, don't get Megatron started.

I have a whole thread on this, but it's a pretty unpopular opinion here on WZ. Plus it's never ever ever going to happen so don't even worry about it. Baseball Union would never allow it. And the baseball union gets what it wants. If the baseball union wanted to officially make the sky purple, President Obama would be holding a press conference announcing the sky is now purple.

We are already there in football.

Lionel Messi has a basic salary of about $40 million. All of his endorsements and bonuses likely double that. $I.5 million a week...

yeah but he's a once in a lifetime talent. Baseball gives out big money to the standard player. Which is crazy, sure they play 162 games a season (which is stupid) but outside of the pitcher and the catcher all they do is make sure there nuts are sitting in a comfy position, swing a bat a few times and occassionally catch and throw a ball.

Lulz, still mad over a thread made many many months ago?

Where is this thread? Must read it.

Thoughts on Kobe's farewell tour? Sad that he's retiring but it definitely seems time. He's had some good games but if he plays real late in the game, you can tell he doesn't have his legs for it anymore. If he's playing well, it drives the whole team to do well. So I don't mind him taking all these shots because....who else is gonna take them?!
