The Sports Bar

It's called an All STAR game, not an All "best half season" game.

Derek Jeter is without a shadow of a doubt the biggest STAR in all of Major League Baseball. Couple that with this being his final season and you're damn right be belongs in the All Star Game.

Jeter is the biggest star in all of baseball? Uh, no. Yes I cannot deny the guy is a future hall of famer, and he's a legend. But to call him the biggest star in all of baseball? Bit of a stretch. I wouldn't even pick him up as a backup for my fantasy team.

He hardly played last season, and this season he's hitting .272 with only 2 home runs, and he's already got 6 errors. I admit that not a lot of AL shortstops stand out, but there are many better than Derek Jeter right now. JJ Hardy for example.

Jeter simply hasn't been relevant for the last two years.

There's no way a guy with a wRC+ of 80 and is coming off a season with a wRC+ of 40 and plays for a team that probably won't make the playoffs should be starting in a game that awards home field advantage in the World Series. If it means nothing, sure, let him play, but he has no business being in a game that matters.
Then using your thought process you should completely remove all fan voting since the fans are the only reason he's in the game.

Remove all fan voting from the All Star Game and the fans will be pissed.

You apparently fail to grasp the notion of stardom. Breaking news, current on-field talent is hardly a barometer for stardom.

That's like saying the Kardashians aren't stars because they aren't talented. Sure they aren't talented, but they're stars. They didn't earn it like Jeter did but they're famous none-the-less.

I have zero issues with Derek Jeter being in the All-Star Game.

Why? Because he's Derek Jeter and the game is an exhibition which should mean nothing but Bud Selig is a nitwit and can't use common sense.

Hardy is hitting .280 with 3 home runs. He has one more RBI than Jeter and the exact same amount of hits. You'd rather see him than Jeter because of 8 points on a batting average and 1 home run and 1 RBI? I'll take the feel good moment and the appropriate sendoff for the superstar finishing his 20 year hall of fame career.

So Odrisamer Despaigne had a no hitter going, and we're in the 7th inning now. I'm not gonna lie I don't even know who this guy is, but it's fun to watch.

He's at 90 pitches already though, I don't think he's going to make it.

I know I watch too much wrestling when the thought of Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, and Rafael Palmeiro storming the stage in nwo shirts with the music playing pops into my mind.

Not crazy about Greg Maddux having the blank cap on his plaque. I'm a die hard life long Cub fan but even I have he should have the Braves cap on his plaque.

Anyone else see what happened to Paul George? If not, just copy and paste what I have in the spoiler. It was nasty so please be advised. This is your warning. Anyway, I wish him a speedy recovery though. He was such a good young player and now he'll be plagued with a lot of "What ifs" unfortunately.

That George injury was bad but I've seen worse.

Every compound fracture I see is the worse I've seen at first glance. It's always gruesome. But yeah, using the Theismann Scale I'd give the Paul George injury an 8. Sucks about that stanchion. Doubt George will ever be the same but I hope he comes back 100%.

Now officials are looking at the backstand and have seen that it was definitely closer than it's supposed to be. I think they'll probably move it back even more. It's supposed to be 4 feet away from the court but in the Thomas & Mack Center, it was barely 3 feet away I believe. I guess it's good that people are looking to change this to get the backstand further away from the court to protect the players. Sad that it took an injury to one of the best young players in the NBA for them to realize it.

Also, I just wanted to know who the die hard NBA fans are here on the forums? Seems like the Sports Bar is comprised of mostly Baseball and Football talk. No problem with that at all though, just wanted to know :)

In the end of the Pirates/D-Backs game, the D-Backs have a man on third and first with 1 out. The ball is hit to the shortstop and he thows to second for the out and when the second basemen attempts to throw for the double play at first, the D-Back's runner slides late and puts his hand up and successfully blocks the throw to first. Baserunner from third scores. No replay, game over. Can anybody explain how that is legal?

It's not if the ump decides it was 100% done intentionally, but there was no way that call could be made on that play. You watch most guys slide and their hands are going to be up in a similar fashion. No way to know for sure but it looked unintentional.

Yeah, those are always tough calls for the umpires to make. Then when they make a bad call, they always get some whiplash but I guess that's understandable. I saw the play you're talking about and I agree with Big Sexy. It didn't look intentional at all so maybe that's why the umpire didn't call him out. There's absolutely no way to know if the player did it intentionally though. I think.

Thanks Big Sexy & JAM CENA. I am a Pirate fan living in Pittsburgh so I can admit that I'm obviously going to take the Pirate's side. I just wanted to see what people outside of Pittsburgh thought about it.

One thing I can't understand is how a team can draft a young QB early, and then not start him right away when you have no star QB. If he's supposed to be the answer then why are you delaying it? Specifically I'm talking about the Jags looking to start Chad Henne over 3rd overall pick Blake Bortles. But same deal with the Browns and Johnny Football. I don't think there's any harm in throwing him in there right away and seeing if he can carry the team.

Especially when these teams are essentially in rebuilding mode anyways. They aren't contending.
