The Sports Bar

Shows how much attention I've paid to All-Star Weekend. I might check out some of the game just for the inevitable showdown of MVP candidates.

Yeah that should be fun. What I wish they'd throw in on All-Star weekend, is a one-on-one game. Think of maybe five different possible one-on-one games, and the fans vote on which one they want to see.

Just imagine seeing KD vs. Lebron James in 1v1 game. It would be too awesome.

All-Star weekend has been pretty awesome so far. Now it's the dunk contest. I just hope that this doesn't bomb, it's the main event for Christ's sake. All these new rules have been a breath of fresh air.

Butcher, you're a Baltimore Orioles fan right? I need some baseball help. You know who their closer is going to be? I see on their depth chart that Darren O'Day is listed first, is he closing? If so I have to do something with him. I'm not sure if I can make room to keep him so I'll have to try and trade him.

It's not set in stone, but I read Tommy Hunter.

We are kicking some ass in hockey at the Olympics. Just got done watching the win over Russia. Damn fine game by any standard. That last period & shootout was intense. The win over Slovenia today keeps the blood flowing for us thanks to Kessel. Still a tough road left, but we are playing great. Proud as hell of those guys.

Alright thanks man. I'm already going to try and deal Joakim Soria, the guy I'm dealing him to has to see if he can make room before keepers. I'm looking to get a 6th rounder back, because I gave up my 7th rounder when I traded to get Joe Mauer for Brett Lawrie.

But I'm gonnna find out who has Tommy Hunter in my league, and offer him Darren O'Day. Good insurance just in case Hunter doesn't get the gig ya know? So hopefully I can get a 6th or 7th for him too.

I'm just trading these guys because I don't have room to keep them either.

Edit: Tommy Hunter is actually in the damn FA. No one has him. Lol. Maybe I'll just make room for O'Day and then look to draft Hunter. I already have Fernando Rodney and Koji Uehara, but the more closers the better in this league.

Is it realistic to hope that the White Sox can win 72 games this season and be better than the Twins? I like to think so.

I'd like to tell you so, but I don't think that's the case. It doesn't seem like they've really made any significant improvements this year, and have really only lost more than they've gained. Adam Eaton and Scott Downs are probably their two biggest acquisitions this offseason, and that's quite unfortunate. They've lost Addison Reed and Gavin Floyd as well, so their pitching is now even more watered down. Looking like Nate Jones is going to be taking over the closer role there, and he has no closing experience in the MLB whatsoever. His K's weren't bad last year, but the year before they were. So their bullpen looks very mediocre as well. Paul Konerko is just about done too, which is unfortunate because I liked him. So it's good that you're setting your goals and expectations fairly low.

The Twins don't have a whole lot either. The fact that their ace pitcher is Ricky freaking Nolasco is barf worthy. But they do at least have a pretty solid bullpen is Perkins closing, and Burton in the setup role. Plus they've got Joe Mauer so that's at least one big name.

First, is Jose Abreu not a big acquisition?

Excuse me while I laugh at you thinking Gavin Floyd is a loss after last season.

:lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao:

He made 5 starts before needing Tommy John surgery. He was 0-4 with a 5.18 ERA. Gosh how are they going to replace that?! Hector Santiago performed admirably considering what he was asked to do, but he was expendable too. No guarantee he can stick as a starter. How to replace those two. Oh, a young guy in Erik Johnson and Felipe Paulino being healthy.

Addison Reed had no closing experience at the MLB level until Ventura made him the closer in what, May of 2012? Saved 29 games that season. The White Sox have a strength in developing young pitchers, especially at closer. In addition to having Jones in the mix, Matt Lindstrom and youngster Daniel Webb are also in mix. Jones has the inside track, but an ass strain has him out for a week already.

There are a lot of unknowns on the team. But a new offensive philosophy thanks to Todd Steverson should help the young hitters. The Sox were awful on defense last season. If they are just average they will be a lot better. Besides, unless you really try, like the Astros or Marlins, it will be tough to be any worse than the White Sox were last year.

Uh, okay? Jose Abreu hasn't proven anything. How can you consider him such a super stud? He's a batter coming over from the Cuban leagues. So first of all you can add a few years to that age, and second of all he's facing a completely different pitching game. My prediction is he'll probably go out and hit a decent amount of homers, but his average will be trash. I just don't think he has the bat speed to catch up to major league pitchers, not to mention his conditioning is out of wack. So yeah good luck with that big six year $68 million dollar contract.

I forgot Gavin Floyd got hurt last year, forgive me. You're right he's not going to be the same, but I mean he was never no CY Young but he was at least a decent middle of the rotation guy. The dude got strikeouts. But like I said I did forget about his injury and surgery, so I agree he is just about useless now.

Cespedes and Puig were never proven when they signed with the A's and Dodgers, yet you'd say they were pretty big signings, no? Specifically Cespedes. I'm not saying Abreu will be a stud, but a lot of teams wanted to sign him because of his power and ability to hit to all fields. Still a big acquisition.

Yeah I agree he could end up helping the White Sox out, but as of right now we don't know if he's going to be a star or not and that's what I was looking at when checking out the White Sox.

A lot of guys come over, like Puig and Cespedes, that were never proven but yet do great. Then there's others who don't, so it's up in the air with Abreu. Like I said my prediction is he'll probably hit around 20-25 homers if he stays healthy, but will bat more around .260. Which aren't bad numbers they'll definitely help the Sox in the long run especially because Paulie is just about done. It doesn't look like the White Sox will be using him at all this season.

I think your team will finish ahead of the Twins though. Like you said maybe around 70-72 wins.

Actually looking at Abreu, I wish one of my two teams got him.

Anyone else watching the Sport's Newton Awards? This is the first time I've seen them before, pretty cool stuff to watch. It looks more into the science of it all, so it's really interesting to watch.

I'm hearing the Tigers are signing Miguel Cabrera to a ten year contract. Cabrera is obviously awesome and one of the best, if not the best player in the game. I just don't get why teams continue to give such long contracts to these guys. Cabrera has already been around for more than ten years. They're giving him another ten. Is he really going to be worth it after five years?

The guy will be 40 by the time that contract is ready to end, and they'll still be paying him 60 million dollars a year. OK Tigers, whatever. Figured they would have learned their lesson with Fielder, but I guess not.

I've never understood why any team would sign anybody to a ten year deal. There's so much that could happen within that ten years, it's just far too much of a risk to end up paying someone a ton of money when you don't know what they're going to be like in ten years.
