The second incarnation is where it's at. Nobody really remembers that either, because only three people watched FCW. Their matches basically consisted of the stable stomping on their opponents until O'Brian booted them in the head.

Between that version of Ascension and the first NXT version Kenneth had a solo run with the gimmick and got quite good at making matches work while acting like he's off his rocker, and basically became the mouthpiece in their vignettes. O'Brian has is not a great talker but is big and a decent worker for his size so the team worked.

Viktor's a Dungeon trained mechanic but has never worked a gimmick like Ascension, so they're becoming what you say, badasses who just want to kick some ass. But as of now retained enough of their old incarnations to be recognisable and because they're not exactly what they used to be, idiots will complain. And hey, at least they're not doing forcing them to go further down the cultist path like this practice promo:

Original Ascension rocked because there was actual competition and more effort into vignette and Cameron had a bitching scream. Viktor and K'onor are great together and rock at killing people left, right and centre. I wish they'd use that book more. In early vignettes Viktor was holding some kind of supernatural book. They should explain that.

Anyway, the book was there because Ascension spent most of their existence being cultists making barely concealed references to going to heaven. The book was their Bible. Viktor carrying it shows a connection with the gimmick, rather than it being someone who randomly showed up. i.e. he's always been in Ascension, he was just preaching somewhere else until he came to Florida. They need to move the fuck away from that shit. There's already a cult gimmick on the main show, and both are better at doing other things.

See, I'm glad that this is happening because it's a tip of the hat to how good their previous matches have been and an acknowledgement of how well-regarded they were. On the other hand, they're seriously going to start running the risk of overdoing this. One more probably can't hurt but eventually this feud'll turn into AJ Styles versus Christopher Daniels; yeah, it'll be entertaining enough but, between the dozens of matches that have already happened and the dozens which will yet happen, it doesn't really matter who wins.

Give me that Zayn versus Rusev match.
