The Neighbors (Hulu Series)

Art is a very tricky means of appealing to the masses.

Everyone I know, everyone I've asked, everyone online; the verdict is that "The Neighbors" is the absolute worst thing they've ever seen, and I absolutely love the show.

Some of you might be aware of a "so bad it's good" movie called "The Room" that was released in 2003. A man who goes by Tommy Wiseau created that movie and it's yet another example of something I love unconditionally that many other people hate passionately.

There are no clear answers on what type of art Mr. Wiseau is attempting to portray. Some assume he's just a talentless hack who desperately wants to live out his fantasies through film, I'm with those who believe that he's actually a genius who's crafted a deliberately absurd tv series that lampoons common mannerisms in both film and real life.

Tommy Wiseau plays a clerk (possibly the superintendent) named Charlie who works in the main office of an apartment complex, and he also plays a young affluent wolf-in-sheep's clothing named Ricky Rick. He uses his classic "Oh hai!" trope as either character.

It's difficult to describe exactly how each scene steals my heart. I just imagine that if I was there, and everything was really happening, I'd be laughing hysterically at the weirdoes involved. It's as if they took PeeWee's Playhouse, and replaced all the characters with porn stars who are told to reject all possible subtlety.

In one scene; a bikini model (who always wears a bikini) begs to be able to greet a visiting Princess from England, Charlie relents without making it clear why he might not want her there in the first place, and the entire populace of the apartment complex cram into the tiny staff office to greet the visiting Princess. I was laughing so hard it scared my pitbull. The humor is in that nothing makes any fucking sense!

In another scene; a young pizza boy delivers a pizza to two women (one wearing skimpy lingerie) who share an apartment together, and requests payment. The woman in lingerie produces some money from her lingerie top, but it's not enough. The same woman produces money from her lingerie bottoms, and it's enough. The young pizza boy immediately signs a lease and is welcomed to the apartment, and is never seen again.

The Neighbors constantly recycles the same bloopy Seinfeld-esque bumper music in between scenes that either vaguely progress the plot or ignore the plot entirely. One scene has two women fake fighting over one thinking the other is a lesbian, another scene has Ricky Rick and friends chuckling over whip cream being sprayed on his nose. A sassy tenant keeps a chicken as a pet, a drug dealing tenant is desperate to eat that particular chicken.

EVERYONE hates this show except for me, and I find that to be so very endearing.
