The Most Stale Personality In WWE Today?

S.J. Maximus

Championship Contender
I think the title is pretty self-explanatory but just in case there is so ambiguity that I'm not aware of I will explain the purpose of this thread. I basically want you to tell me who you think is the most stale personality (not just wrestler) in the WWE today. Who has been relatively the same for way too long and has lost or has begun to lose your interest?

For me, it's a tie between one of my all-time favorite wrestlers Triple H and the current SD GM Teddy Long. The main thing about Triple H to me was that he always evolved. He went from snob Hunter Hearst Helmsley to douchebag Hunter Hearst Helmsley to funny Triple H in a matter of 3 years (1995-1998). From 1999-2001, we saw him turn into The Game and then the Cerebral Assassin, take out every top face there was at the time and even managed a brief face run. From 2002-2005, he went from main eventing WrestleMania as a face to continuing to main event WrestleMania as a bitter top heel, always changing with the times. So all this changing leaves me so frustrated that since turning face in 2006, he has been the same sarcastic, joke-cracking, witty face that panders to the kids. I'm not saying that character is bad because I did enjoy it in 06 and 07 but come on, you'd think he'd change especially with this new role he has!

Teddy Long started out as a referee, and then somehow became a charismatic manager for people like Mark Henry which I actually found entertaining. I'm not sure when this happened (I watched RAW a lot more than SD) but eventually he became a face and was GM of SD which he has been for far too long. I don't find him entertaining, funny, or anything of the sort and I don't think SD would even change if he ceased to exist.

I guess you could say that Teddy Long is stale but I guess he can afford to be because there is very little for him to do except make the odd match. I actually want him to appear even less on my TV screen and maybe do away with this boring angle with Aksana. He isn't someone I notice and so he can be anyone or anything he wants to. As for HHH, I do think that he has changed his character after turning into the GM. He plays a badass face with the power to play with people's lives which is a bit different from the sarcastic, pandering babyface he was as a part of DX.

The person who appears a bit stale to me is The Miz. I maintain that Miz got his push in the first place as a result of pure dumb luck because there was pretty much no one ready to push at that point. That's not to say that he hasn't done some good work but the work done in recent times by the likes of Punk, Christian and Henry has been much better than Miz's work from 2009 to 2011 for which he was getting a lot of place. Once guys like Punk, Christian and even Rhodes hit their stride, The Miz got sidelined simply because these guys are more talented.

The Miz needs a change badly. He has two expressions at best, a mocking one and an angry one which makes him look more constipated than anything else. He is doing pretty much nothing in terms of feuds and his promos are boring the hell out of me because he has nothing to say. I get that WWE does not have much for him but still he should try to mix things up a bit. A face turn and a move to Smackdown would be highly recommended at this point.

I definitely agree with you about Long. He has been in that position for far too long and has become boring to me. Triple H I kind of agree with you on but he really doesn't have any reason to change. I think everyone agrees that Cena's character is stale so I'll leave that alone. Santino's character has long become stale I mean he's not even funny so I dont see why he remains in comedy.

I'm gonna go with Jerry Lawler. The King has become stale on commentary mainly because he no longer has JR to go with and his best moments were the non PG one line jokes he delivered in the 98-01 time frame.

Maybe it's Cole dragging him down...but King needs something to jolt his character *NOT A HEEL TURN, just maybe some freedom to work off script every now and then

Teddy Long was a charismatic manager long before he joined WWE he is most remembered for being the manager of DOOM (Ron Simmons & Butch Reed) he went from referee to manager for Rodney Mack cuz he lacked mic skills and Teddy was good as a heel manager

Who is the most stale personality in WWE is Michael Cole and Jerry Lawler Cole is to repetitive every week and him and Lawler bickering back and forth every week is old nobody cares about the two announcers little name calling during the show.

Teddy Long was a charismatic long before he joined WWE he is most remembered for being the manager of DOOM (Ron Simmons & Butch Reed)

Johnny B. Badd, Rodney Mack, Mean Mark (Undertaker), One Man Gang
Mark Henry, Jazz, Norman the Lunatic, Joey Maggs, Craig Pittman, Chris Jericho, Jim Powers, Bobby Walker, Ice Train, John Wrestle King, Rosey, Mark Jindrak

Teams and stables managed

Doom (Ron Simmons and Butch Reed)
The Skyscrapers (Sid Vicious, Dan Spivey and "Mean" Mark Callous)
Marcus Bagwell and 2 Cold Scorpio
Thuggin' and Buggin' Enterprises (D'Lo Brown, Rodney Mack, Jazz, Christopher Nowinski, and Mark Henry)

But that was then, as a GM he's been very stale and a pointless character and the only time he remotely showed anything interesting was when Vince was hinting at firing him, which was another go nowhere storyline like the anonymous GM which i guess was Johnny Ace.

as for most stale other then Teddy, pretty much the commentry in general. Cole's on again off again Captain Schtizo persona was annoying the first few times it was presented and Lawler (as a commentator) is really nothing without JR and being able to talk adult material or being a heel

For me it's Dolph Ziggler. His promos are beyond boring. The only reason he gets any kind of reaction is because of Vicki. His match are good. But let's be honest, it's not about in ring work anymore. If you can't talk, your career will go nowhere. The WWE has tried several times to get Dolph over and it just hasn't happened and I don't see it happening.

To me it is The Miz. It took me a long while to get into him to be honest. It was Miz's ring work that just didn't do it for me until his match with Jomo. This made me like him to where I wanted to pay attention to him. I watched all his promos whenever I would watch Raw unlike before when I'd mute the TV or go for a smoke break. Miz pulled my attention in with delivering some brilliant promos and generating some decent amount of heat from the crowds he was at. I was into his character a lot more than I have been until recently. Now, I am back on the boat of just not caring for him. I don't like to compare wrestlers to other wrestlers but, Miz, seems to be a Jericho clone just less talented in every aspect. (Jericho is another stale superstar in my eyes) Miz would come out and deliver slow promo after slow promo which sounded exactly the same as last week. His character is lost in the shuffle, seems to be on bad terms in the back (all though rumors are worth shit) and he has just been awful in the ring. Miz had tons of momentum while he was WWE champ and now it is back to being boring. He is in far cry of a revamp of his character. No, I'm not saying turn face as that is not the solution I see as everyone thinks turning is the best answer. To me it's not. What I believe Miz needs is just more dedication in the ring, coming up with much clever promos and just some more edginess to him. Miz has all the potential to be something huge unlike others in my opinion. If Vince is really high on Miz then he should cut the strings like he did to Punk and let Miz show the world he can truly be Awesome because as of late he's been awful.

A personality that has been stale for me for some time is that of Cody Rhodes. I wasn't the biggest fan of the "Dashing" gimmick but when the facial reconstructive surgery storyline bred a new, masked Rhodes with a darker side and more intensity in his promos I began to really love his promo work. Now, his ring work is stellar and has been for a while so I have no complaints there but his new gimmick - whatever the hell it is - has grown old on me fast. He just looks like a goon most of the time and has lost a lot of the intensity that the masked Cody showed. I feel it's killed his momentum dead and he should have kept the masked gimmick for at least a few more months than he did. Hopefully he will get to work with his big brother Goldust at Mania and Dustin can bring out some of his better promo work again.

I wasn't thinking about non-wrestlers, otherwise Teddy Long or Jerry Lawler definitely would've been my first thought.

But as soon as I saw the subject, I couldn't think of anybody but The Miz. Dude hasn't changed a bit since he was on Tough Enough in 2004. Literally it's the exact same character...he hasn't even changed catch phrases in like 3 years.

Dude needs a change BAD. I don't know if he can pull off being a face, but they need to find out, because he's gone as far as he can as a heel right now.

This is a no brainer John Cena is the most stale act in WWE today cuz he has been playing the same Hulk Hogan wannabe character since coming to Raw in 2005 which means he has been this way for about 7 years.

Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson. He comes back when he can be bothered and says a couple of catchphrases which makes all the attitude era fans wet themselves. I loved Dwayne in the attitude era but not he's stale and should just go and make his movies.

The Miz
He does the same promo over and over again and to this day i have no idea why anyone likes him at all. Orton is similar but at least Orton is entertaining in the ring, whereas Miz is the most boring worker this side of Khali.

I would say Teddy Long has gone stale, he's not the exciting GM that he used to be, sure he's made some good matches on SmackDown! recently, but it seems like it's the same thing over and over again. As for Triple H I wouldn't say he's gone stale, but he has not changed at all recently. He is adapting to his role as COO so I can see why they've made his character dull and stale as he is now a business man, not a competitor. They need to pull something out of there sleeve to have Triple H agree to take on The Undertaker. I think a Career vs Career match would be fitting and appropriate and to seal the deal, perhaps make HBK the special guest referee.

Now as for my take on who I believe are the most stale personalities in the WWE today, to be honest there's quite a few. I'm not gonna mention any new comers because they still have a lot of time to build and shape these guys into something and some of them wont even be around by next year. I'm gonna have to go with Randy Orton and The Miz. Why Randy Orton? Well it's simple, he hasn't changed his personality over the last 5 years at all. We get it he's the Apex Predator, he's meant to look mean and angry, but it's gone stale, not to mention his mic work is still horrible and he's been in the WWE for how long. I'll give him his in-ring work, but even then how many moves does he have to steal/modify in his moveset. As for The Miz, if you were to ask me a year ago if The Miz would be a full time main eventer, I would've said yes, but right now it's not happening. His career is slowly sliding downhill and I'm not saying this because of the recent hull of his push and his issues in WWE. Ever since his WWE title reign he hasn't been in the title picture he's has title matches sure, but he's gone stale. His mic work is the same thing every week. His in ring skills need some work, I'm a big fan of his but he needs more personality. Especially right now he needs to learn from CM Punk, he's in the doghouse and the only way out is to make himself another hot commodity and start impressing, otherwise he's gonna end up being a jobber on Superstars with Alex Riley.

Michael Cole.

Having to listen to someone badger other announcers and put himself over for a year and a half has become ridiculous.

It's so unprofessional. You don't see sports casters acting like that on ANY OTHER SHOW.

But it's professional wrestling... it's not real... so it's perfectly acceptable to have an ass of an annoucner who only has his job because he is a grade A ass kisser at plugging the WWE's products.

The wrestling on the show would be so much more enjoyable if an announcer was actually talking about it and explaining it... hell even getting you excited about what's happening.

It's not even that he's stale... he's just become unbearable.

Totally agree with people saying Teddy long he's been the boring god guy GM for too long now the last time I can actually say Teddy Long did anything on TV that had my attention was his addition to The Undertaker CM Punk feud back in late 09 with the whole screw job and Vince having him on trial. I think Teddy definitely can be a great heel back to his days with Ron Simmons in WCW all the way up to managing Mark Henry and doing the White boy challenge with Rodney Mack.

Love The Undertaker but i think the whole dead man gimmick is growing stale, I personally think with his recent haircut and him coming closer to retirement every year give the American BadAss or Big Evil gimmick a go again. It would definitely be interesting to put Taker back on the Harleys :)

Big Show. I just cant stand to watch any match or segment with that guy. Maybe Khali more so because he is even worse. At least I can laugh at Big Show because he is such a big idiot but Khali is bathroom break. I would also say that Ezekiel Jackson is pretty stale too. I know they wish he would be good since he is so massive but the guy is awful. I dont know what it is that he is missing but I dont think he will ever find it. He's a poor man's Lex Luger. Rey Mysterio is pretty stale as well. I hardly notice that he is gone. How about Jack Swagger. Somewhere along the line WWE made a wrong turn with that guy and it may be too late to correct it. John Morrison was stale but he left. Mark Henry is kind of stale but he is always stale since he just isnt that good. How about Ted Dibiase? I just cant find anything entertaining about the guy. Jinder Mahal is pretty lousy as well. Cant say he is stale because he was never fresh. lol. Same goes for Michael McGillicutty but I dont even know if he still has a job with WWE. Drew Mcintyre has been stale but I'm not sure he was ever fresh either. The Divas are all pretty much stale except Beth and Tamina or Kharma. Michael Cole is awful. You cant ruin something that was never good to begin with. I think Daniel Bryan is pretty stale but he's been stale since ROH.

I think I just named half of the damn roster. lol

to me, the top 5 stale personalities in the WWE today would be:
5. The Great Khali. Not just the character he is portraying, the guy has been stale in every damn thing he has done since the end of his feud with Taker in 2006.
4. J.T.G. Without his partner with him, this whole Hip-Hop Cryme-Time or whatever you casll it, just isn't working out. I see Hunico reaching that level as well soon enough.
3. Drew McIntyre. Started off as the chosen one, had a good run, then faded into the dark since coming to RAW. Needed an alteration in character, didn't get any.
2. Jerry Lawler and Teddy Long. Enough is enough. I dislike these men's work more than I hated Jeff Jarrett as a kid. A face commentator, sucks up to the faces, but goes way too far with it at times. Commentators are meant to be telling stories, not become a part of it themselves. The other, is a face GM, also sucks up to the faces, but goes way too far with it every time. I liked the angle where he screwed Taker against Punk. Within one week, he became the top villain on friday night. But the turn was ended way too soon.
1. Jack Swagger. The American American. It was dead-stale when it started, and it is dead-stale now, just a bit more unbearable. He comes, he dances, he fights, he goes- No one Cares.

None compares to The Miz for me. He cuts one promo about how someone picked on him and it got everyone excited and rightfully so. But after that I can't remember anything he's said that has stuck by. He is THE definition of generic heel and really I don't know how you can elevate a talent by putting him in a feud with him.

He is there because of a lack of someone better or actually someone good. He is the epitome of average and stale. I'd glaldly see Wade Barrett in his spot as top heel on Raw.

The great khali
Jack Swagger
Natalya (the farting gimmick has gotten stale already)
Big Show (I'm a fun guy and a giant yay!!!)
Ezekial Jackson
Jinder Mahal
hell I could go on..

thats the problem with WWE currently though, they are keeping a lot of stale gimmicks around because they can... Nothing drastically changes week to week so they keep them around because hey we won't lose anything by having khali "wrestle"(quotes because he doesnt wrestle)... or hey lets give nattie neidhart a farting gimmick, that works that gets the kiddies to laugh.... (f'ing stupid)

and before i leave the other gimmick that needs to stop... the failure of the tag team division as a whole.... They need to build up some tag teams and have some feuds that people give a shit about... They need to have the tag titles actually lead to singles titles again or at least have tag team matches where fans actually think one team has a shot... not oh shit we have 7 minutes to fill, lets have primo and epico face the uso's for the umpteenth time...

Teddy Long:
I think it's pretty obvious that Teddy Long is one of the most stale personalities. Honestly i have never been a fan of him being general manager. I never really could figure out why he would get a crowd reaction just for doing a dumb little dance and saying a couple catchphrases. I have honestly been hoping that Aksana will some how screw Teddy and take his spot as GM. Although this most likely wouldn't be much better but hell at least it's different.

Vickie Guerrero:
Ever since she was involved in the Edge storyline i have found her being there completely useless. I get that shes good at getting heat but is it good heat? Most people boo her because they really can't stand her. And her character has not changed what so ever unless you count her losing weight; which i don't. The only thing positive she contributes is getting a crowd reaction for Ziggler and Swagger but does this benefit them in the long run? The answer to this is no. If they need to count on her for their reaction they're in serious trouble. We all know she is only there because of her last name. The least they could do is add something to her gimmick instead of just being loud and annoying.

Mason Ryan:
Although he hasn't really been used lately on TV i find him extremely "stale" and boring. There is nothing to his character. I admit with his size and the fact he is from a different country automatically creates some interest and leaves potential but they haven't cashed in on that yet. His face turn was a little bit surprising when it first happened but it was also completely pointless. What do you get out of him running in to save the day? A cheap 20 second pop? No one cares about Mason Ryan. He is not going to be the next Batista any time soon. What they need to do is bring him back as a dominate heel and maybe be in some kind of stable. A guy like that isn't going to give you 5 star matches. He needs to be able to dominate his opponents and look like a monster.

The Great Khali:
Everyone else has summed it up pretty well.

Jinder Mahal:
This is a guy who gets very little to no crowd reaction. He has done nothing for anyone to even care about. For starters we have already seen his gimmick a thousand times before. He does nothing but attacks superstars; Not very successfully i must add. And he barley gets time to cut promos. I understand them not wanting to put time and effort into him because there is such a lack of interest in him already but if that's the case take him off TV. Otherwise if you're going to give him time on Smackdown at least give him 30 seconds to a minute to say something. Let him add to his character. Right now there is nothing worth investing into him. If they don't let his character expand then he will doomed.

I will go against the stream and say Teddy long is a-ok. Yes he's been doing the "Now hold on a minute there playa'. We're gonna have our self a fatal-four-way...." for some time now, but I don't find Teddy stale.

I do, however, find CM Punk on the verge of being stale. Yes. There, I said it. I enjoyed the shoot and "The Summer of Punk" just as much as the next guy, but I find myself getting more and more bored by this anti-establishment gimmick and his constant pandering to the WWE universe, setting himself up on that self-righteous pedestal.

Teddy Long here too:
I haven't been watching quite as long as some of you, but this guy makes it hard to watch Smackdown. I can't stand his use of "playa" and his interaction with females is just corny.

Daniel Bryan:
This guy is being overexposed and his role as a heavyweight vegan champion is pretty corny too. I know he is supposed to be an underdog, but the way he pushes veganism on people and lambasts them for eating meat is just plain weird.

Cody- he to me is just there right now. I don't care to hear him talk or see him wrestle and I know he is good but I just don't care so that's why he is on the list.

CM Punk- I just don't find what he says being creative like other do. That's just me. I don't hate him but I don't care for him like I did in the summer.
