SummerSlam 2012: Chris Jericho VS Dolph Ziggler

The Brain

King Of The Ring
I’m stunned that nobody has made this thread yet. I figured people here would be salivating at the very thought of this match. I’m not as high on Dolph Ziggler as most people but I think an experienced ring general like Jericho can carry him to a very good match. It’s pretty obvious that Jericho’s assignment here is to put Ziggler over and make him look good. Hopefully this will be some kind of breakout for Ziggler that puts him over the hump for good. He’s looked good at times but can never seem to sustain any kind of momentum. With Jericho turning face for this feud I have a feeling the goal is to give Ziggler a match that can be a turning point in his career. This seems like an old school SummerSlam IC title match. I’m hoping for about a 15 minute match here. I see a lot of potential with this match but I won’t get my hopes up too much.

Ziggler should walk away with the win here. He could use the rub, and a win over Jericho at Summerslam could provide a good amount of momentum for him, as he prepares to cash in the briefcase on Sheamus, or whoever the World Heavyweight Champion might be by that time.

More importantly, I think it's put or shut time for Dolph Ziggler. Ziggler has been given chance after chance to get over, but he hasn't been able to live up to the big expectations. Lengthy reigns with the IC and US titles, he feuded with Edge over the WHC, and now he holds the Smackdown MITB briefcase. Plus, things look a lot worse, when you have a heel magnet like Vickie Guerrero as your manager. Ziggler needs this win over Jericho, because he can't afford any setbacks during his chase for the title.

Jericho has always been good about putting people over, and Dolph will be no different. Dolph is going to look like the biggest deal on the planet when he goes 20 with Y2J, of that I have no doubt...

...it's just what WWE is going to do with him AFTER that I'm cynical about. Remember, Evan Bourne and Slater got put over by Jericho and that didn't exactly make them huge deals.

I am hoping this is the match that solidifies Ziggler as a main event player, and to tell you the truth if Jericho can't help him get over the top then I am not sure he can get there. Jericho is in this match to put Ziggler over, and I am predicting a clean Ziggler win. Question here is will this be Ziggler's break through match. I hope it is.

I could see Jericho going over getting his first PPV win since his return. Then Ziggler taking him out after the match as a way to write him off fow a few months. It been reported that Jericho is taking time off after Summerslam.

Jericho's return has been tarnished to much for Dolph Ziggler to get over even if Ziggler wins.

Jericho was beaten clean by Punk numerous times, and had his face Superkicked off out of the blue by Sheamus. Sheamus escaped The Walls of Jericho, and 2 Codebreakers (1 from the top rope) to make a Miraculous recovery to make Jericho look weak. Now Ziggler is spouting that Jericho is past it and has lost his touch, can't win the big one.

For me Jericho is going into this match looking like a whipping boy for Dolph Ziggler in an attempt to get him over. Won't work and Dolph Ziggler will stay where he belongs in the mid-card.

It's Chris Jericho vs. a young talent who could use a win against a big name... I wonder what will happen?

It's all Dolph Ziggler for this match because Jericho is all about losing to younger talent. He's great with putting younger talent over. With Jericho going off with his band it's a nice move to have him lose to Ziggler and give the kid something to talk about before he takes the title sometime later this year.

It'll be a good match and a solid win for Ziggler over a guy like Jericho. The more big name wins he can get before taking the title the better. I look forward to seeing this match come SummerSlam as it will be exciting to see Jericho before he leaves.

I am looking forward to this match with much anticipation! This is gonna remind me of matches back in the day This match should deliver a quality 15 minute match, that should be match of the night IMO. Jericho is obviously gonna put Ziggler over in this match that is a no brainer. Ziggler needs this win,to help him solidify him as a main-eventer.

When Ziggler wins this important match in his career then its full steam ahead for him. I wouldnt be surprised if he cashed in his MITB briefcase at the end of the night to make it a perfect night for him. Jericho doesn't need any more wins in his career his HOF career is set in stone. So i expect Ziggler to win cleanly in this one.

I agree, Jericho lost a lot of his momentum. I dont know how much Dolph is going to gain from beating him. Usually when you call someone a loser, and say they cant win the big one anymore that person actual wins, like Big Show/Cody at WM. If Dolph is going over, then he did himself a disservice by pointing out how much of a loser Jericho is since his return.

Meh. Jericho is nowhere near the worker he's made out to be and his current run in WWE has been completely flat. I also find Ziggler to be deathly dull. Great at selling, blah, blah, blah. Yeah, but he's a heel and I don't see why he should sell so much anyway.

Ziggler should and will win. Then he should enter a feud with somebody who might elevate him. He's got the MITB briefcase, you'd hope WWE would pair him with a succession of headliners before he cashes in.

I'm looking forward to this match, it'll be fun. Jericho's lost a step and Ziggler's nowhere near as good as he's made out to be, but they're both good workers and will be able to put on a solid match. This type of a match is exactly what Ziggler needs, too -- Jericho can make him look good and put him on his way to a feud with someone else who can put him over and build him up (possibly Orton). The biggest thing that we'll take away from this match is how much faith WWE has in Ziggler and if he has finally been able to prove himself. With a good performance, I can see him doing big things with that Money in the Bank briefcase. With a bad performance, I think we'll be seeing more of the Dolph Ziggler disappearing act.

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised to see Ziggler cash-in, either. A win over Jericho would instantly give him some credibility and he'd be able to sneak up on Sheamus and maybe take the belt. I'm not exactly in support of the idea, but it's not too far-fetched. Still, I don't want to see Ziggler shot up the card too quickly -- a la Jack Swagger -- and then fade out after losing the championship. WWE's ultimate goal with this match and with giving Ziggler the Money in the Bank briefcase is to create another main eventer -- they need to do whatever they can to make sure that happens. A win over Jericho is an excellent building block.

As a WWE fan and Wrestling since I was 5 (I'll be 25 in November), I can't wait to see this match. Hopefully 15 to 20 minutes. Jericho's job is to pass the torch and put over Ziggler and with any luck, Dolph will stay at the top after this. It's time, and if it fails, just end it.

Both are great in the ring and this should steal the show and be a potential match of the year canidate! These two have clicked nicely the past few weeks and I can't wait to see the end result at Summer Slam!

This is tied with Lesnar/HHH as top match on the card for me!

I am SO HAPPY this is finalized for Sumemrslam!

These two can tear down the roof!

With so few matches announced and now Sheamus/Del Rio on the backburner, i hope WWE gives them 30min+ and just let them STEAL THE SHOW!

SHOW OFF!

I may be naive, but I think I am going with a Y2J victory here. The whole storyline about how Jericho can't win the big one is getting over pretty well and if Dolph wins, Jericho looks pretty weak on the way out. There's more ways to put over Ziggler, perhaps better ways to put over Ziggler. A Jericho victory, followed by Ziggler snapping and attacking Jericho after the match and putting him on the shelf does wonders for Ziggler. Dolph and Vickie will brag about how they are responsible for ending Chris Jericho's career. This way Jericho can win a match, Ziggler gets credited with taking Jericho out and showing a new ruthless side to his "show off" character and Dolph can ride that wave of momentum to the World Title.

I thought as soon as I saw this feud coming about that the Match for Summerslam should be, Dolph Ziggler vs. Chris Jericho - If Ziggler wins Jericho leaves the company, and if Jericho wins he gets Ziggler's Money in the Bank, it would make perfect sense to do this, as Jericho is obviously leaving after Summerslam, not only that but it puts over one of your up and coming stars, as he can brag about 'ending Jericho's career'.

Can't agree more. I can't see Dolph going anywhere even if he wins, as long as he has Vickie with him he'll just be another generic heel mid-carder. Hell, I'm still confused why they made Dolph win MITB instead of Cody. Cody doesn't need Vickie to get a reaction out of the crowd. And Cody can TALK on his own without anyone backing him up.

As much as I like both Y2J and Dolph, I can't help but feel disappointed by this feud.

Doesn't matter who wins. Dolph's not getting any relevance beating a man who's "lost his touch" And Jericho's leaving after this feud so win or lose it really don't matter for him.

This will be a good match. Nothing more and nothing less. Chris Jericho loses, Dolph Ziggler wins. Dolph Ziggler supposedly cashes in later that night (unless the World Heavyweight Championship match happens before this match). Dolph Ziggler doesn't need a win over Chris Jericho. He needs a win over someone like Randy Orton. The Miz has pinned both Randy Orton and John Cena, so Dolph Ziggler could use the same rub. Anyone can beat Jericho. He's not a challenge anymore. I still look forward to a good match with excellent shades of the old Y2J and Ziggler selling like crazy. He should go on the offence more in this though. That would make him more invulnerable.

Y2J is a big cog in the wheel for Zigglers rise to stardom, but I agree, he does need another big victory after that. Orton would be ideal, but good luck getting Orton to take the pin. Other than that, there's no real top faces to solidify him.

If not for the possibility that Jericho is leaving again (hopefully not for too long), I would say Y2J wins this match hands-down. Jericho's a legend while Ziggler's a jobber whom WWE wants to make into a main event player. Yes, WWE shoves Dolph at us at every opportunity, but Jericho is......well, Jericho.

Of course, there's a second key: Jericho is (apparently and surprisingly) turning into a face. Why? What for, at this late juncture? If he's leaving, what's the sense of making him a good guy? Is it simply because management doesn't want a heel vs heel match at Summerslam? Is it because they plan to have Ziggler win and can't see him going over another heel? What?

As for Jericho, why turn him face if he's leaving right after the match? Or is he leaving? Yes, he tells us Fozzy is going on tour, but is this another one of those swerves Jericho has loved tossing at us in the past?

Okay, then. If Y2J is really leaving, I say Dolph wins the match. He gains a lot of credibility by doing so, while Jericho sacrifices nothing by getting beaten if he's leaving. By the time he comes back, we'll be too happy to see him to worry that he lost to Dolph Ziggler, if we even remember it at all.

If Jericho is staying, I think he probably wins this match, if for no other reason than that he isn't exactly facing John Cena; even at this stage of Jericho's career, I can't believe he loses to Dolph Ziggler straight-up if there are no other implications involved.

This match could potentially steal the show. Both are superb inside the ring and they've shown a good chemistry with one another thus far.

Personally, I'm hoping Ziggler pulls off the win here. Ziggler is the one that needs the win more than Jericho. Given that Ziggler got the win in a triple threat match against Jericho & Miz on Raw, it's easy to see that WWE might give Jericho the win here as a means of evening things up a bit. However, according to reports, SummerSlam is said to be Jericho's last WWE appearance for a while. Allegedly, he's not booked for any post SummerSlam appearances. If that's true, then it makes even more sense for Ziggler to win here.

I don't really see a purpose in Jericho getting a win here if he's going to be leaving again for a while. If he's not and the feud is going to continue, then a loss for Ziggler won't be so bad. Regardless of whether Jericho is leaving after Sunday or not, he's not the one that's in need of a win. If WWE wants fans to get behind Ziggler as a serious contender for the WHC and a potential long term main event player, then a solidified win in a one on one match over a decorated & over veteran that's still among the top overall pro wrestlers in the world is a great way to start.

There is no doubt in my mind that Ziggler will both steal the show here AND get the victory. We already know what Ziggler as well as Jericho are capable of in PPV matches, now we get to see them face each other! I can't wait. I'm just glad that the Money In the Bank briefcase is not on the line, that would be stupid but at the same time I would not put it past WWE to go that route. That aside.... We know who is going to win, but the match is going to be so great that I honestly do not care. We will be seeing a high quality match and that is never a bad thing, no matter how obvious the outcome appears to be.

Jericho has no reason to win this. As cool as it could be to see him add bright lights to the briefcase if he won it from Ziggler at any point in this feud (let alone the World Heavyweight Championship itself if he went on to win it agaim), this is ALL about putting over the next World Heavyweight Champion. Ziggler on the other hand, will benefit greatly from the victory here. I expect a show stealer with Ziggler winning but Jericho putting up a heck of a fight. It will probably go on earlier in the evening to help set the pace for the upper card matches.

DAGGER'S PREDICTION
Dolph Ziggler will defeat Chris Jericho

At first I thought maybe the WWE will give Jericho the win to redeem himself, I mean it is pretty sad seeing Jericho on the end of a trashing from Ziggler about not being able to win a PPV match even though Jericho doesn't need it but still, then I thought about how Jericho could leave & return again and it will make more sense if he loses. I can see him cutting a promo on Raw about how his return is a failure and how he needs to leave & find himself and when he does, things will "Never Ever Be The Same Agaiyne" then in Jericho's next comeback, he will be cast as an underdog, with everybody questioning if it's time for him to hang it up or if he's found himself again and well if he's gonna retire then that will be the setup, if not then he will start winning PPV matches, having found himself again. But I kinda hope this is a swerve actually and he's not leaving, I'd love to see him go onto feud with The Miz over the IC Title and see that culminate in a match at Night Of Champions, that's a feud I've been dying to see and would be a pretty damn good rivalry over the IC belt.

This should be one of the better matches of the card, with two great workers like Chris and Dolph it's bound to be a hell of a match. The build was one of the best we've seen with Dolph but I was hoping for a little more from Chris, still it was enough to have me more excited for this one than any other match on the PPV. Ziggler needs to be built as a legitimate threat to Sheamus and that is exactly what these past few weeks with Jericho have been building up to, now he'll beat Jericho in what I hope is a nice long match with some good spots and Ziggler taking the win.

Dolph will go on and hopefully be successful in cashing in on Sheamus, Jericho will go tour with Fozzy and hopefully be back next year.

This believe it or not is the match I most look forward to at Summerslam. I think this has been one of the better built programs heading into the summer show and it is really giving Ziggler some much deserved spotlight. I expect this to be the match of the night and I actually think Jericho is going to squeak out a victory. It is more likely that Ziggler wins the match as Jericho is likely to be gone for awhile, but something tells me that Jericho for once is going to go out looking good for a change. Either way this match has a nice backstory and the two guys are two of the better workers in the company. No matter the winner, I'm looking forward to a show stealer here.

I feel like Ziggler should get the win here but also that he should get it clean.
I'm a Jericho fan but this has to be Y2J properly passing the torch on to Dolph here.

Solid match i reckon.
Ziggler with the 1-2-3.
