The rapidity of the American restart attacks really is in a different league (along with a lot of other aspects of course)

Yes, and it's amazing how quickly they get out on the fast break too.

The Nigerian team is pretty damn athletic. Their skills aren't nearly on the level Team USA's are, but athletically, I've been impressed with them.

The US is killing Nigeria in basketball; have we even lost in basketball so far this Olympics? Did we even lose in Beijing?

No. The last time we lost was back in 2006 at the FIBA World Championships.

Shouldn't their be restrictions against us then? Like only allowing one or two NBA All Stars on the team instead of, like, all of them?

Kobe and Lebron could be drunk and they'd probably still be winning.

This is the best the US mens basketball team has looked thus far in this years Olympics. I feel bad for Ike Diogu because he doesn't have much help but his performances in this Olympics could win him a spot back on an NBA roster.

Why should there be restriction? Because US basketball has the most talent? Every country has their professionals playing so it makes no sense to just put restrictions on the US team.

It's amazing that, at one point, Ike Diogu was considered a Top 8, if not Top 5, pick for the NBA draft. He went back to school for another year, and that was the end of that.

Personally I wouldn't agree with it, but I read somewhere that restrictions were put on China and Russia because they were so dominant in women's gymnastics.

Thought maybe something like that would happen to the US men's basketball seeing as we've been so dominant for so long.

I agree with you Echelon. I think there should be restrictions placed on all of the basketball teams from all of the countries. No professionals on any of the teams, end of story. The Olympics should feature the best amateur players of the world, not professional players making multi millions of dollars.

I think that was more in the ilk of only allowing the top x athletes from any nation to compete, rather than as many who could qualify. So even if the Chinese number 5 was far superior to most nation's number 1 you'd still get a spread of nations in the final.

As for basketball; yeah, probably needs regulations on professional competitors. At the very least bring it in line with football.

Carmelo Anthony is now the single game scoring leader in USA history. 9 for a 11 from the 3pt line.

I disagree. The Olympics should be about the absolute best athletes in the world competing.

I disagree. It should be about the best amateur, unpaid athletes in the world competing in an event where the results are not virtually a foregone conclusion. A competition amongst the athletes who are damn good and skilled in their respective sports, but who will never make it a career. Guys who have been toiling for years and the Olympics may be their only avenue to shine, but they won't get the chance because they are competing against multi-millionaires taking a brief hiatus from superstardom.

Personally, I don't see the satisfaction in seeing LeBron, Kobe, and friends decimating teams from Nigeria or France.

Team USA now has the Olympic record for most points in a single game.

Team USA has DOUBLED the Olympic record for 3 point shots made.

I don't understand the appeal of a situation where you have clearly inferior athletes competing at a competition that is set aside for the best in the world.

I used to think it should be amateurs only, but then I stopped caring. Back when those rules were established, the idea of a whole team being made of full time professionals would have been insane. At the end of the day, they're basketball (or whatever) players that play against top competition and have better coaching. Soccer players have clubs they regularly play for and there are NBA players playing for other teams. Just because guys like Durant and James are American and play at the highest level in the world, why shouldn't they be allowed in the Olympics? A lot of players turn it down, so it's not like they're being forced to go play.

73 points isn't a horrible total for 40 minutes. It got beaten by 83 points tonight. It would have been a double digit margin if they had doubled their score. That's insane.

73 points isn't that good considering how many possessions they had. Nigeria shot 41% and had 24 turnovers. And Team USA wasn't really putting full effort in the last quarter and a half on defense.

See, I don't accept that the Olympics are a competition for the best in the world, I think they are a showcase for the best amateur players in the world. When one team beats another team by 83 points, safe to say, there's a fundamental problem.

I think it is unfair to refer to the other guys as inferior athletes. Anyone would be inferior in basketball when up against a dream team like the USA parades out there. The thing I enjoy the most about the Olympics is seeing dramatic action which is hotly contested. One team more than doubling the score of the other, hardly high drama.

This is true. I'm not sure what can even be said about a rout like this. I remember once UK beat I think North Dakota something like 84-7. They had 5 at halftime and Rupp yelled at the Cats because a player had three points.
