Now, before you tune out of this one, just read it through. I've been watching CM Punk and his Straight-Edge Society as they continue to rise on Smackdown and I have to say I'm seeing more and more correlations between it and the Nazi/Neo-Nazi movement. Each time I see them, I'm getting more and more sure that there are many elements that have been adapted from Nazism to model the SES. Not that this is a bad thing. Nazis have been reliable generic villains since World War Two. I'll put out why I think the way I do about this.
1. The Emphasis on "Purity": Naturally, every gang or movement will have an "us and them" mentality in that if they aren't us then they aren't as good as us. We are the best. In the case of the SES, what makes them "better" is a purity of body through the avoidance of drugs, alcohol, and smoking. Okay, despite the fact that Hitler would have (at least publicly) approved of all of this, it's simply good sense so I could let that ride. However, outwardly the SES are also trying to "purify" the WWE of those who don't think like them. Recruit 'em or shoot 'em, so to speak. Now, to be fair, the SES hasn't gotten to racial purification...yet. On the other hand, post-Jeff Hardy, CM Punk's two major feuds (if I'm remembering correctly) have been with R-Truth and Rey Mysterio. Considering that all known members of the SES are snowy white, one has to wonder.
2. The Act of Shaving the Head: This is really what brought this to my attention at the beginning. When you join, your head is shaved. There is only one other movement I know of where the shaving of the head is compulsory upon joining and that is the Neo-Nazi variety of skinhead (not to be confused with the various other varieties of skinhead who, so far as I know, simply cut the hair very short rather than shaving it.) This could be simply because of the direct connection between the skinhead and punk-rock movements, but I just think there is too much of a direct link here to ignore.
3. The Symbol of the Society: Okay, maybe I'm nit-picking here a bit with this one, but I think that it should be noted that it only takes a right-angle dash at the end of each prong to turn an "X" into a swastika. That being said, since they're making CM Punk more Charles Mansion than Adolph Hitler, I wouldn't be surprised to one day see a big Straight-Edge "X" seemingly carved into his forehead.
4. One Nation Under Punk: CM Punk's character himself is portraying many of the characteristics common to Hitler's methods of keeping his people loyal. This could be simply because they're known to work, but his speeches, his demonstrations of power, his hiding behind his followers, and his gradual targeting of threats one by one all add up. Not only this, but you will notice that he demands not loyalty to the Straight-Edge cause itself, but loyalty to Punk himself. Rather like the way Hitler demanded not an allegiance to Nazi Germany, but to the Fuhrer directly.
Now, this could all be coincidence, sure, but it's my view that WWE creative actually went ahead and resorted to cosmetically altered Nazis as the soon-to-be primary villains of Smackdown.
My questions: Am I wrong here? Are there more reasons why I'm right? Is any of my research faulty? I want to know what other people think.
