Now that I ponder this, I'm inclined to find SxE kids are hypocrites. They get all preachy on my drinking and smoking, yet they get to drink all the caffeine they want? What the Hell?

Anyway, I have yet to give my opinion on this subject yet, but here's my stance on it:
Not once in my life have I had a slip of alcohol, take a puff from a cigarette, or try any kind of drug whatsoever, but you know what? I don't put a title to it. Fuck straight edge. Most straight edge people are ignorant, close-minded, holier than thou fucks who are also extreme elitists when it comes to music and try their hardest to be social outcasts, but at the end of the day... they just come off as lame.
Seriously, anyone who lives the straight edge lifestyle, but has never been to a hardcore show, or any part of the scene whatsoever... then don't claim to be straight edge. You have no idea who you're associating yourself with. Just be you. You don't need a title to it.

1. Considering how many drinks I turned down in high school, I'd say it is.
2. Caffiene is technically a drug and technically not. There's a fairly good sized difference between caffiene and crack I'd assume. As for an answer, I'd say simply because it's A, legal, and B, while it's a stimulant, it's hardly something that's going to change the way you live and function.
3. Only fucking ***** hold it over people. My theory is this: I live one way, others live another way. You don't talk down to me because of how I live, I won't talk down to you about how you live. If you happen to see thigns the same way I do, then sweet. If not, sweet as well, as long as it doesn't interfere with me.

I feel like I've been a little too srsface and analytical in the Bar Room the last couple of days so I hate to drag this down into a big philosophical thing, but I do think there's more to it than the holier-than-thou attitude.
I think what it really comes down to is just a support group. Say, someone makes the perfectly valid decision to abstain from drugs and alcohol. Good for them, right? But then they get all these people looking down on them and peer pressuring them and essentially judging them for that decision. I don't think anyone here would do that, but it happens.
So these people have heard that there's this subculture formed around the decision they've made, so they identify themselves with that to have... well, an excuse, I guess. Someone passes them a beer or a bong and they don't have to say "No, I don't do things like that" and subject themselves to the ridicule that might bring. Instead, they get to say "No, I'm straightedge" and theoretically, that gets them an automatic pass.
So yeah, I can understand it to a certain extent.

the term vice is open to infuckingterpritation. Caffeiene has quite an effect on the body...fuck sake, it was a genuine question. no need to get so fucking arsey about it. It was actually inspired by the thread when the guy said he wanted to be straight edge but couldnt be because he'd have to stop medication. How's that a vice?

this is not me having a go at people who live that lifestyle, rather people who feel the need to tell us they're straight edge or whatever.
Though it's the same to people who drink, when I was t-total my pet hate was people who would try and trick you into drinking.

You two are great. But the majority of straight edge people I've met in my life are fucking asshole pricks. The straight-edge scene in Boston specifically used to piss me off to no end, because they had fucking GANGS and shit and a whole movement of asshole who would literally come up to you at a show if they saw you drinking/smoking, knock your shit out of your hand, and fucking JUMP YOU for smoking or drinking. That's probably why I fucking despise that movement; I realize alot of you guys are cool and not like that at all. But the people I've encountered in the music scene specifically are among the biggest pieces of shit ever. Go to YouTube and look up "Boston Beatdown" and you'll see what I mean.
