Stand Up Comedy Review And Discussion Thread

I went and saw Steve-O do stand-up comedy last night. He was actually really funny and had some really good stuff. He mostly talked about behind the scenes stuff on Jackass and some crazy sex stories. He almost had me in tears laughing. He only did two stunts at the very end, and only one that would hurt him because he said he feels like he would disappoint us if he didn't do something like that. He also took pictures with everyone at the show and said he wouldn't let you leave unless you took a picture with him. He had his own camera and uploaded the pictures only a couple hours after the show. It was a great all-around experience and I would easily recommend seeing Steve-O.

The MC for the night was a local guy, Brian Thomas. He was pretty funny, but I've already seen his set a few times and he seemed to know that everyone was there just to see Steve-O. He was still really good.

The second comedian was Josh Phillips out of Tennessee. He was absolutely hilarious. Phillips probably did about 20 minutes and covered everything from old women at Wal Mart to driving in front of cops. He had great material and I hope to see him make it big and I think he has the goods to do it.

I'm excited for Sunday night because Showtime is showing the new Jim Jeffries stand up special, "Alcoholocaust." Jeffries has become one of my favorite comedians because he isn't afraid to say anything and he really pushes the envelope. I am really pumped to see his new special.

I'm not a big stand up comedy guy, but I have been on a stand up kick lately courtesy of Melissa Villasenor. She is a stand up comic, impressionist, and singer currently performing on America's Got Talent. Her impressions are pretty solid and her Owen Wilson and Sarah Silverman ones nearly had me in tears. What I like is that her impressions aren't ones that most impressionist do. It adds that unique element to the act.

Another stand up I enjoyed was Russell Howard. I saw him do stand up on Conan (which was his American TV debut) and it was pure gold.

Jim Jeffries "Alcoholocaust" made its debut tonight on Showtime and while it's not as unapologetically honest and crude as "Swear To God," it is still a very good show. Jeffries spends a lot of his time to discuss the difference between how men and women approach sex and what it takes to get both sexes ready for the act of sex in a hilarious manner. He also talks about the difference between gay men and lesbians. Jeffries used a lot of time in "Swear To God" to deconstruct the idea of religion, that topic gets left alone for all but a single passing comment for "Alcoholocaust."

Jeffries tells two absolutely hilarious stories. One about his trip to do performances in Iraq and another one where he helps a childhood friend, and I'll just leave it there. Jeffries has struck gold once again with "Alcoholocaust," and although after one viewing it's impossible to say if it's as good as "Swear To God," I'm able to say it's right behind it at the very worst. Jeffries is a comedic genius and if you like his style of comedy, and you'll know if you do within minutes of him taking the stage, then you'll love "Alcoholocaust."

Last year I went to see Frankie Boyle live and holy shit, it was almost the biggest waste of money I've spent in sometime. I say almost, because his warm-up act was brilliant and totally knew how to get the crowd going.

Craig Campbell

His love for Scotland is always a good thing in my book so will try and see him if/when he comes back :)

ahhh a few great stand up comedy acts come to mind but ill say 2 of my favorites that ive seen many times and they still always make me laugh my ass off!

Ron White: They Call Me Tater Salad: im a huge fan of the blue collar comedy guys and i think there frickin funny and ron white is a funny dude and the tater salad story is my favorite part of his whole act! loved that whole thing though.

also any Dane Cook stand up act count me in hes my favorite comedian ever hes such a funny dude and the fact that he read tons of things about people hating him online and hes a modest dude makes him more likeable if anybody doesnt like him id like to know why they dont because i find him fucking funny!

Dude, I saw your first post saying it when it was coming out but unfortunately my Showtime subscription ran out the fucking day before. Luckily I was able to find a torrent late last night and dude... Wow. I loved "I Swear to God," I've seen it plenty of times on HBO. This one is maybe just a step behind it but fucking Christ I could barely breathe at some points I was laughing so damn hard. I normally shy away from foreign comedians, simply because I have a hard time understanding them but Jim Jeffries is well worth overlooking such a stupid thing. He's fucking beyond hilarious.

Just wanted to post this in here. I'm making my stand up comedy debut Wednesday night at the Comedy Zone here in Jacksonville. I've been going to a comedy workshop over the past few months and Wednesday is the graduation show. It's going to be a mix of comics who attended the work shop mixed in with the funniest comedians here in town. All of the graduates have five minutes, which is more than enough time for me to do my thing.

I was hoping to be early in the show, but I'm scheduled to go on next to last. I have no idea if there is any rhyme or reason to the order of the graduates, but I'm telling myself they went from least funny to funniest. It's also good because I'm between the two funniest comedians there, so the crowd will be hot when I get out there and if I bomb they will forget about me within minutes.

I just thought I'd let everyone know what I'm up to. Wish me luck please. I'm going to need it.
