Something I would like to see with WWE......

WrestlingHistorian

Pre-Show Stalwart
With the March Madness tournament consuming basketball fans and college sports fans with their month long tournament and brackets and all that jazz, I would like to see something similar with WWE. I know WWE had the King of the Ring tourny, but it was a one night thing and had no real excitement to it after a while and it was used to build new or young talent for the most part, but I want something huge where once a year WWE takes all of their big names from all the brands and places them in a month long tournament and makes a big deal out of it with brackets and whatnot. It would be kind of cool to see, what do you guys think?

something i ould lie to see would be what they did at wrestlemania 4 have a 16 man tournment for the title and have it be the whole ppv like a no mercy or something and have different match types the whole way through and have the main event be a ladder mtch or last man standing

here is something i would like to see in wwe. i would like to see the ecw championship treated like a world title again. i would like ecw to get some backbone. a good way for them to do that is take the stars they're not doing shit with or under utilizing and stick em on the ecw brand. such names like: kane, charlie haas, dolph ziggler, goldust, jim duggan (trainer), jamie noble, hawkins, ryder, chavo, and helms. i could name a couple others but i don't wanna push it. what do you all think?

WCW had a month-long 32 man tournament in 1999. If Cena wins the title at Wrestlemania, then takes time off for his next movie as rumored, then WWE could have a tournament like that to crown a new champion. Wrestlers from all three brands could enter the tournament if they want. Everyone would be eligible except current world champions (Orton and Swagger probably). Orton would probably wouldn't allow Rhodes and DiBiase to compete, so I didn't include them.

Raw:
Batista, Chris Jericho, CM Punk, JBL, Kane, Kofi Kingston, Mike Knox, Rey Mysterio, Santino Marella, Shawn Michaels, William Regal, Beth Phoenix (she could face Santino possibly)

SmackDown:
Big Show, The Brian Kendrick, Carlito, Edge, Jeff Hardy, Matt Hardy, MVP, Mr. Kennedy, R-Truth, Shelton Benjamin, Triple H, Umaga, Undertaker, Vladimir Kozlov

ECW: Christian, Evan Bourne, Finlay, John Morrison, The Miz, Tommy Dreamer

The first 3 rounds will be on tv, taking three weeks. The final four would be at the next PPV.

I really like the idea of a tourny, but if you look at the past couple of years, with two half-assed KOTRs and a mediocre i.c. title tournament that everybody knew Punk would win, the WWE cannot seem to properly push a title tournment anymore. The WM4 one was exciting...Lately, tournaments have NOT been exciting...

I love tournaments, i prefer for them to be one-nighters and not spread out throughout a month. The other problem is that you can't go from a 16 man Tournament at WM4 and then have these tiny 6 man tournaments after. The first KOR tournament was a good one because Brett had to fight 3 times. It shows the ability of one guy going out three times to get his crown or his gold. The KOR lost it's luster when only the semis and finals were on PPV and then it was just the finals on PPV and now it's just on RAW (Regal) or Smackdown (Booker T) (I believe the Booker T final was on Smackdown). Hold a 16 man one night tourny with worthy competitors for the KOR ar a vacant title, or heck go for an 8 man one but it has to be on one night for it to mean something. The last few KOR winners have been heels. (Ringmaster Stone Cold- Heel) (Hunter Hearst Helmsley Heel) (Mr. Ass- Heel) (i think Angle was a Heel when he won) (Edge - Heel) (Broc Lesner Heel) (Regal-Heel) Booker T- Heel). Um, I believe theres a pattern here. Anyway even if a heel is going to where the crown, make them earn it by winning 3 o 4 times on one night.

A one nighter tournament provides more excitement than a drawn out monthly one, especially for the crowd, seeing a tired superstar finally overcome the last obstacle and win.

I had an idea for this to be done with the cruiserweight championship. A one night tournament at a lesser PPV (Judgement Day, Unforgiven). Title matches for the World titles could still be done in the 3 hour period, as the opening matches could be quick spot filled sessions to get the crowd awake and to show them what the cruiserweight title is all about. To re introduce it and immediately give it prestige, a 3 bracket tournament of 8 superstars would work. To not make it a half assed KOTR one, the prize would be highly sought after by even the smaller men of the main event, im thinking jericho and HBK, both smaller men could be utilised as early favourties to be eliminated cheaply by The Kendrick or Tyson Kidd.

Alas, this isnt a thread on cruiderweight title but rather on tournaments. The key factor in a tournament is to put in place wrestlers that people actually care about rather than someone you just want to push. A balance is essential.
