Someone Help Me Please

Go to control panel and then device manager. Then tell me what it says under the sound and audio option.

EDIT: An OS is the operating system and will usually be XP, Vista, Windows 7 etc.

Exactly. If its Windows 7, head for the Desktop (The main screen) and right-click. Look for "Personalization". A window for editing your screensaver, background and other stuff comes up. Click on "Sound" and a small window will pop up with the sounds set for your computer. Head for the option labeled "Playback" click "Speakers". Your options there should show if they are active, off, plugged, etc.

Oh ok. It's a Vista.

Also, when I go to Device Manager on the CP, it says Sound, Video and Game Controllers and under it says Realtek High Definition Audio.

OK, so go back into that and double click on the Realtek High Definition Audio. It should come up a little window with the status of the device.

I don't think that one will help. You don't need programming to run speakers on a computer. Look for an option that just says "Sound".

Ok, I double clicked and a screen came up with a picture of a guy sitting at a desk with speakers and a computer. Also, there is something that says recording volume and playback volume. What should I do next?

I have no idea what you have done because it should only come up a dialogue box with the status of the device in the general tab. However, I would suggest putting both of the volume tabs all the way up.

I right clicked on Realtek HD Audio Manager and there is an option that says Volume Control and one that says Sound Recorder. Which one do I click on?

No.

Start> Control Panel> Hardware and Sound> Sound> Playback> Speakers> Properties> Device Usage

After I click on sound there is nothing about playback...

Oops. I saw it. Let me continue...

No? Oh boy... Ok, try the volume button. The one with the little speaker in the bottom of the screen. Plug in the speakers, hit "Mixer", and then click on the speaker options. From there see if there is an option that says if its enabled or disabled.

The speakers are plugged in but there is volume button. All there is that has to do with audio is the Realtek thing. And when I right click on that and then click on volume control it says that there is no audio device installed.

Here's what I'm seeing here. If it's telling you "No audio device is installed" it sounds to me like your sound card got jacked up. Speakers aren't plug & play in the traditional sense, as in they don't have software. Your computer should be trying to play even if you have nothing plugged in to the speaker jack. If it's telling you it can't that is a problem with your sound card, not the speakers...

EDIT: Just noticed Sly is here now...he'll get ya fixed...

You just know this will be something stupid...
There is nothing about device usage. I clicked on properties and the three tabs are: General, Driver, Details.

Under the "General" tab, what did it say? Under the Driver tab, what version of the driver are you using? Under the Details tab, what does it say?

EDIT: Also, in your device manager, do you have any unknown drivers?

Probably so.

Give me a minute. I'm going to post pictures of everything it says so that it's much easier and I don't end up confusing anyone.

The thread was actually giving him the right advice so far.

Except you never told him to try a different pair of speakers.

God bless his genius soul. God damn my soul for not bothering in getting out of the hammock and thinking of that.

Now I'm going to look up the thing about the device manager.
Everything there looks good, although I think there is probably an updated driver you could get. I don't think that is your problem.

Do you have a monitor with speakers built in? Or any other speakers just lying around anywhere?

EDIT: I AM a bit confused on why you can't select to update your driver. The only thing I can think of is you don't have Administrator permissions. Is your computer set up with different user accounts?

Well, the monitor does kind of have built in speakers. I just have to use a cable to connect to other speakers so that the sound comes out of the speakers in the monitor and not the other speakers.

And no, there aren't different user accounts. There is only on and that's the one I use which does have administrator permissions.
