Should the Casket match be laid to rest?

The Eighties

Forward Thinking Nostalgist
I wasn't sure where to put this but most Casket matches took place on PPV so I figure here would be as good a choice as any.

I always liked the Casket match as I found it was a stipulation well suited to adding drama to a match as well as a visual quality, but with Taker pretty much done and with him being in every one WWE has ever done (I think), do you feel the gimmick match should go with him?

As I type this it actually popped into my head the likely Bryan vs Kane match at Extreme Rules could be a Casket match, but beyond that do you see it as a thing of the past? Or would you like to see a new star adopt as their match?

I know it seems a little tenuous but I could see Bray Wyatt being a suitable heir to the match, given how symbolic it is and given the dark nature of his character and mythologizing tone of his promos.

I think Bray is better suited to taking over the Inferno match than the casket, and I think to be honest, the Casket match has nigh on been retired anyway.

It's seldom used, WWE would rather use the buried alive match which near enough does the same thing but with more tension. The casket ALWAYS felt like a weak way of ending a match to me, and always ended with a big pop move which saw someone get shoved unceremoniously into the casket from nowhere.

I think getting rid would be the best bet, and have Buried alive take it's natural place while Bray inherits the inferno match.

It has, hasn't it? I'm sure the last one wasn't in 2006, but that is the last one that springs to mind.

Undertaker's gimmick matches are actually fairly crummy anyway. They have novelty value and not much else.

Casket matches can be really hit or miss. However, I wouldn't mind seeing another one. Kane vs Bryan in a casket match could be entertaining. It would fit Bray's character, sure. Only problem is this is Taker's match but this is a match that is a novelty and might get people interested.

I'd be surprised if we saw the Casket match again. With the Ambulance match being such a similar concept except less gimmick specific and without the horrendously morbid implications, I'm not sure there's a need for it. I've always been a fan of stipulation matches being appropriate to the storyline so if there was ever an appropriate time for the Casket match (or the Buried Alive match) to make a return, then I'd be all for it. It's just hard to envisage without The Undertaker (or I suppose, to a lesser extent, Kane) being around.

For me personally, the casket match is an example of an outdated gimmick match concept that needs to stay gone. They can be entertaining, sometimes, but it's usually a match that generally bores me. Given the macabre nature of Taker's character, a casket match every now and again was fitting, but it just seems like a strange concept these days. I get that it's supposed to be traumatizing to be locked inside a casket with the casket being a symbol of one's inescapable mortality, a mortality that most people are genuinely afraid of, but it's just too hokey for this day & age. It'd be like someone brand new coming along and debuting with The Undertaker gimmick today.

I guess the answer to my question is the wrestling worlds favourite word right now! :D Interesting to see the Buried Alive match mentioned, I think that one is even less likely to be used again than the Casket match. In truth both concepts are maybe too macabre for current WWE without The Undertaker to anchor them in a comic book fantasy type presentation.

There are two dimensions to the casket match- physical and mental. The physical dimension is that you've to beat your opponent so much that he's unable to withstand any offence, almost to the point of unconsciousness, haul him into the casket and shut the lid. This motive is not entirely dissimilar to the one typified by the Ambulance/Last Ride match, Last man standing match, the Buried Alive match and so on. The non-physical dimension is the quality and symbolism of death and graveness associated with it, which could work well with gimmicks like The Undertaker, Kane, Mankind, and Abyss.

IMO, the casket match had the potential to be beyond the usual Undertaker speciality match in that, even The Rock vs HHH/Undertaker in a handicap casket match in 1999 felt like a helluva match, without evoking any death-like imagery. When the match is devoid of that deathliness, it's still entertaining for any two wrestlers in a big feud to participate in it. However, the WWE has so many traditional speciality matches to have two opponents wrestle in- including Steel Cage, HIAC, Ladder, Last man standing, I Quit, Ironman, etc. - that it's unlikely we'll see this match much.

However, IMO, Bray Wyatt is the perfect canditate to sort of "carry on" the Undertaker's legacy by occasionally wrestling in casket matches. I also love the concept of the Ambulance match, and a Black Hearse instead of the Ambulance only makes it that much better. Hope we'll see at least a few casket matches within this decade.

IMO Kane vs Bryan NEEDS a gimmick like "casket match" or "buried alive" thrown in to make it interesting, I really don't want to see those guys go at it, Kane is just about the lamest guy on the card to watch, mask or not. I could see it being one or the other with Kane losing and going away for months, returning with changed attire to go on one last run.

But on topic I don't think the casket match has been retired by any means. I could really see Bray as the guy besides Kane to have a casket match.

If I remember correctly Mankind was the first guy besides Undertaker to have casket matches without Undertaker in the match? I think anyway, but I'm not sure.

The casket match retires with the Undertaker. It makes no sense to keep using it, especially when you've got so many more viable alternatives.

I remember a Casket Match without Undertaker.

It was on "Raw", can't remember when. It was Kane v Triple H.

Kane won when Shawn Michaels, who Triple H was feuding with at the time, "Sweet-Chin-Music'd" Triple H into the Casket, and closed the lid, costing him the match.

"Raw" ended with HBK dancing on the casket with Triple H in it, effectively "dancing on Triple H's grave".

Does anyone remember this match?

The casket match is The Undertakers match and has been retired for about 5 years now anyway! but as soon as The Undertaker retires so does the casket match unfortunately as I loved the gimmick. I don't think it would be the same having a casket match after Undertaker has gone.

I never want to see Bray in an inferno match. His match with Kane is awful. I'd rather for WWE to create their own gimmick match for him

ill be honest, no i dont, but i do remember a casket match with hhh vs viscera and mideon. i believe it was on smackdown when smackdown was on upn.

as for the topic, yes it is time to bury the casket match. i wouldnt say no to a return though, just as long as it made sense to the story and more importantly to the characters. casket matches have provided some memorable moments but most came after the match was over ie rumble 94,98.
