According to an article at wrestlinginc.com, Santino Marella sat down with Chill Magazine, a publication out of Canada, and discussed the issues with his neck and a potential comeback.
Sometime, within a month of giving this interview, Santino will be undergoing two procedures called Rhizotomies. A Rhizotomy is basically a neurosurgical procedure that selectively destroys problematic nerve roots in the spinal cord. I'd never heard of this before but, if I'm right, this procedure has the potential of effectively killing specific nerves that are causing Santino a lot of pain. Santino commented:
"I'm looking forward to getting my surgery within a month and then I will have a four- to six-month recovery in which I will actually attempt to come back in the ring and wrestle again and make one of the greatest, most memorable comebacks of all time. It will be a long comeback, plus I'm going to be 41 years old. I'm just hoping the surgery and the rehab goes perfect and you'll see me back in the ring sooner than later. SummerSlam is a few months after Wrestlemania, and for us it's kind of like the halfway point of the season because it's the second biggest event of the year. I won't be there. I'm taking care of the neck. But I'll be there next year."
As to why he says he wants to make a comeback:
" want to come back because of some unfinished business. I believe being the Milan Miracle I have one miracle left. There's one belt that I haven't capturedthe WWE Championshipand it's going to require that miracle to do it. On the right day at the right time I can definitely experience capturing that championship. There's still some good wrestling left in this guy, so that's what we're going to try to do."
Wrestlers tend to hype themselves all the time when speaking with outside of WWE controlled media when speaking about certain aspects of their lives, such as injuries. As a result, I don't know if Santino is genuinely thinking of launching a comeback or if it's just a little bit of pomp. Either way, I hope the procedures are successful.
IF Santino is serious about making some sort of comeback, I don't see it happening without him being repackaged. Santino in a main event feud with his comedic gimmick would give people some laughs, but it'd be a waste of time when it's all said & done. I mean, how can you take a guy seriously when he's spent his entire time in WWE as a comedy mid-carder that's dressed up like a woman for a Diva battle royal at a WrestleMania? If we're talking about repackaging him, then I might be interested, depending upon his new direction. Otherwise, I'd rather he just stay retired as it'd be a waste of people's time because there's no money in Santino as this good natured, bumbling foreigner who's finisher is tapping people with a sock puppet.
