Rick Santorum Suspends Campaign, Romney In Essence A Lock For Nomination

I'd actually like this to continue a little longer because I want to see where the Santorum supporters flock to.

It's about time. I think Santorum would've lost Pennsylvania had he continued, no point continuing and getting embarrassed. Let Romney vs Obama begin.

Even as conservative as I am, I would not have voted for Santorum. Had his campaign been successful, and he won the GOP nomination, I would be writing in Herman Cain or voting Libertarian. I still have no idea how he won the few delegates he did. Guy was an embarrassment to the GOP race.

Nah, his campaign was effectively over anyway. She might make a convenient excuse for Santorum supporters, but I think this was coming shortly regardless.

Yep, no matter where you fall on the political spectrum (unless you are as far out in space as Santorum), it really says a lot about the current state of the Republican party that he was able to get so much support for such an extended period of time. The guy is crazy.

Not fun. I'd have liked him to squirm a little longer, as the delegates and whatever chances he had of getting the nomination slipped away from him, in a re-run of 2008. My oh my.

It took this long for the man to realize he had no chance?

But that wasn't the case for a good two months or so. Santorum won states that the "experts" considered locks for Romney. What you have to consider is that Santorum came out of nowhere. When primaries began, he was seen as being behind not only Romney, Gingrich, Paul and Perry, but Bachman and Cain as well. So when he overtook them, and won states that seemed locks for other candidates, the chances of him winning seemed very real. Santorum isn't the case of a Jon Huntsman who truly had no chance to win.

Agree with him or not, and I certainly don't, there's no denying Santorum was impressive and seemed like a very real possibility to win this thing. He was never the favorite, but he had much of the country believing it was very possible. I don't respect his policies or ideology, but I do respect the showing he put forth in virtually coming out of nowhere.

To us yes, but it is interesting he suspended his campaign around the same time his daughter went to the hospital. I am no frothy supporter which I am sure you understand, but his daughter being the main reason does seem to make sense. Either way, I am happy he is out and wish his daughter well. She is only 3 and I have no reason to not believe she is ill.

If he had won, I would either vote for Obama or Independent. I only vote liberatrian in local elections.

I disagree, I think Santorum pulled out of the race because there was a very real chance that he loses Pennsylvania to Romney and that would be devastating.

Although I didn't agree with Santorum's political and social views (as a right-leaning Canadian, i am fairly closely aligned with his economic views without being, you know, American about it altogether), I respected him for coming out as he did and expressing his views. I get the feeling a lot of independents and moderates would have voted for Santorum over Romney had Santorum toned down the rhetoric as he entered the race.

There's no way Romney can get the independents to back him as Obama can. And there's that whole killing Bin Laden thing he's got going for him. I see Obama getting re-elected and a whole lot of turnover in Congress.

If Obama get re elected all bets are off. Just like he told the Russians after this hes done with elections. If we thought Obama was fucking shit up before just wait till he doesn't have to worry about being reelected.

I'd guess it's a combination of possibly losing Pennsylvania and his daughter. If he dropped out just because his daughter is sick, I have zero issue with that. If he dropped out just because of Pennsylvania, I have zero issue with that.

You are saying his sick daughter had nothing to do with it? If he loves his kid it is 100% likely she had a huge role in it.

Loving his child doesn't necessarily mean anything. There were a lot of reports and rumors before the hospitalization of his daughter that Santorum would end his campaign because the polls in Pennsylvania looked bad - it would be a huge embarrassment. One possibility is that he was going to drop out after Easter, his daughter got sick over the weekend, he dropped out. Another is that he wasn't planning on it and the reports were false, but then his daughter got sick and he decided to drop out - I think it was the former.
