Return of the cruiserweight division?

The Wolf

Pre-Show Stalwart
I was just looking on WWE.com and started to thinking with WWE combining all the titles could we have a possible Cruiserweight Title return?

This is why I ask Evan Bourne, Tyson Kidd, Zack Ryder, CM Punk, Caylen Croft, Cody Rhodes, Dolph Ziggler, Kaval, Rey Mysterio, Vance Archer, & Trent Barreta. All would be in this division if I remember the weight limit correctly and I can see it being very exciting if they do it right.

If they do me personally I would love to see Evan Bourne vs Kaval in the final match if they do a tournament.

So what do you all think?

The cruiserweight title was shit while it was in the WWF/E and I don't think it will be any better if it comes back now. They wouldn't lower Punk to fight for the title and most of the other guys you mentioned would be better off in a tag team or in the midcard. The most ridiculous is you mentioning Vance Archer because he is far from a cruiserweight as possible. The title didn't mean much when they had it and it's not going to mean much if they bring it back.

I want the cruiserweight title. What i dont want is another thread about it. Yes they could do it. But wouldnt bringing back an old title defeat the purpose of unifying the titles?yea the prolly need it. It would draw some of the the x division wrestlers in and give some lighter stars something to do. The only problem is wwe would treat it and the division as a filler and not make it anything special. The wwe would give it back to hornswoggle and make the title a complete and utter joke.

I nvr asked should they Cause we all know Vince dont know wat to do wit it but will they. They r buildin a good start and like MattHardyMark said "It would draw some of the the x division wrestlers "

I agree with MattHardyMark, I really don't want to see another damn thread about this. Make an official thread or something.

I also believe the Cruiserweight Title, as bad as it was, would fit in today's Smackdown show. Do what you used to do and have 75% of the cruiserweights on Smackdown. Better yet, have it be a dual-branded title, like the tag titles. There are so many midcard cruiserweights with nothing to do, and this title would at least occupy them until Creative can give them something bigger.

Why would it draw some of the X-Division wrestlers when TNA has something called the X-Division Title and we can debate all day which title is better but over time it has been the title in TNA. Most of your X-Division wrestlers are in tag teams so I don't envision anybody in TNA jumping over to WWE to fight for a lesser title when they could be going for bigger things.

I doubt that the return of a Cruiserweight or Light Heavyweight Division in the WWE will be on the horizon anytime soon. Historically speaking, most wrestling fans have never been overly interested in distiguishing wrestlers by placing them into weight divisions. That works out fine in Mexico, Japan and the like but it's just something that hasn't resonated really with American fans and it isn't as though there haven't been a lot of companies that've tried. During the hayday of the NWA, lots of territories had their own version of a cruiserweight championship but it was never really all that prominently featured when. I think American fans look at a light heavyweight division as something for second class wrestlers, or something to that effect. I know that when WCW had the Cruiserweight Championship it might've seemed different but, in some ways, it really wasn't. You often saw high quality matches sure, but the guys that made up the Cruiserweight Division weren't the ones that were getting pushed or were the draws. They were the work horses on a lot of cards. The X-Division in TNA could be seen as being an exception to the rule and I might agree with that if TNA didn't stop putting emphasis on the X-Division in the last few years as their general exposure has grown. It was huge in TNA's formative years and was still valid really up until about 2 years ago. As TNA has become more "mainstrea" if you will, the X-Division no longer has much emphasis placed on it nor is it really even all that relevant anymore.

Arguably, the most overally prestigious light heavyweight championship in America has been the NWA World Junior Heavyweight Championship. It's one of the oldest wrestling titles in use today and traces its roots back to the mid 40s. The title never had the prominence in prestigue or champions that the NWA World Heavyweight Championship had and, even to this day, it still doesn't and that isn't likely to change. It wouldn't surprise me if a lot of fans had no idea that the NWA has a light heavyweight championship or that it ever did.

One reason why there are a lot of comparatively smaller wrestlers in the WWE and TNA now is because a lot of the best young talent coming up through the ranks are on the smaller side. Some of them are billed as being significantly heavier than they actually are due to the fact that a lot of small guys still do have a stigma in the eyes of a lot of fans. Kofi Kingston is generally billed at I think 221 pounds but, just guessing by looking at him, I'd put him around 205, maybe 210. I've heard AJ Styles billed during his ring entrances before at being as heavy as 235, but he's more likely around 210-215.

Cruiserweight title may work but it's name shouldn't be that, it should be orientated for high-fliers but should be like a semi-main event belt *example like X-division and Douglas Williams holding it <-- he isn't a main eventer but he doesn't fit the title "way" so... meh*. If it is just cruiserweights then it will seriously end up like some mid-card belt because only really Mysterio and the probable pushes for Kaval and DB are the only main eventers in the division. (Is CM Punk cruiserweight... I didn't know that he weighs so little lol but anyways thats another SOLID main-eventer in the division...)

Basically don't regard anything I said just do it WWE lol *because I'm sure Cristian fits into the division and maybe even the likes of EDGE and stuff... OOOOO*.

In all honestly I've been hoping for this to happen ever since they got rid of the division/title. With all the titles apparently being merged there would be a lot of room left for the smaller guys. You'd have 1 World Heavyweight Title, 1 Mid-Card title, 1 tag team title, 1 Diva's title and 1 cruiserwieght/light heavyweight title giving the WWE 5 Titles in total. Here's who could be in the division: CM Punk, Daniel Bryan, Bourne, Morrison, Miz, Gabriel, Primo, Truth, Santino, Slater, Kidd, Yoshi, Ryder, Croft, Chavo, Christian, Rhodes, Hawkins, Ziggler, Mercury, JTG, Kaval, Kofi, Mysterio, Baretta. Obviously some of these guys are mid-card/maineventers but this is just everyone who would be considered a light heavyweight/cruiserweight. I would probably bring back a new version of the light heavyweight title rather then a cruiserweight title. Have the weight class be from 180-240 lbs or something.

I would like to see the Cruiserweight Title return but most of the guys you've named like Archer, Hawkins etc. are hardly even high flyers. I really wouldnt want to see the title be a joke again and held by a non high flyer. The only true high flyers right now are Rey but he's too established to go for it, Justin Gabriel but he's bigger than the title the way WWE are pushing him now, Morrison is the same as JG. Kaval, Primo, Chavo, Evan Bourne & Tyson Kidd are the only legit high flyers I can see staying in the division and not being used for any other title but more than 5 is needed for the division.

I would like to see the Hardcore Title return with the 24/7 rule. Anybody can compete for the title, it can be interbrand with guys from both brands invading both shows for the title. The 24/7 rule where guys would go after the champion, anytime, anywhere was always fun to watch, guys from both shows invading each other anytime, anywhere would make it even more fun to watch.

This is pathetic. Why does no-one understand that WWE will not be bringing this back anytime soon? They failed to book it properly when they did have it so why would they bring it back.

It would not work, it would be boring, ground-based matches with an absolute minimum of high-flying. Anyone hoping for the second coming of WCW's crusierweight peak would be very mistaken.

I would love to see the cruiserweight title brought back..For the exact reason it OP said...all that talent would be awosme in its own division...Id love to see a bourne/Kaval match....that would also give gabriel and Slater a exit from nexus...

While I'll agree there would be some kick ass matches like Evan Bourne/Kaval, those kinds of matches would also be very limited. There aren't too many cruiserweights on the WWE roster. We would eventually see everyone face each other sooner or later with the limited cruiserweights and it would just grow old. I don't understand why everyone is talking about recreating the ministry of darkness, bring back Nation of Domination or bring back the cruiserweight title. While all those ideas were great to begin with, let's try and move forward in the company instead of trying to create something that will fail (WWECW). Try and focus on creating new things instead of trying to re-create the attitude era or in this case the cruiserweight title. It would never be the same as the old days in WCW where you had your Dean Malenkos, Eddie Guerreros, Rey Mysterios, Jerchos, Psycosis', Juventuds, and Lance Storms. Let's try and move forward and enjoy what we have. So to answer your question, let's not bring it back.

I'd love to see it. Evan Bourne, Kaval, Yoshi, Daniel Bryan, Tyson Kidd. It's a pretty solid roster. Not the mention the fact that this would give WWE some room to pick up some smaller indie wrestlers. If they're willing to pick up young, smaller talent with some personality, they could definitely make for some entertaining television.

No the cruiserweight division should never return. The WWE has never cared for such a division. It only meant anything in the WWE when it was full of WCW superstars after the buy out and even then it sucked. Theres a reason why it was retired, they didn't care, the majority of the fans didn't care and what good would it be to have such a division when the WWE wouldn't allow the cruiserweights to go out and do their thing as they would be limited to an evan bourne move set which is a one trick pony.

Vance Archer weighs much above the cruserweight limit which was 220 pounds.
But I do like the idea of bringing back the division. With talent like Bourne ,Tatsu and Kaval which are being wasted as jobbers currently WWE could surely rebuild the division however I highly doubt that happening as Vince never really cared for this division.

I'm obviously not as huge an American wrestling buff as you, Jack-Hammer because you seem to know your stuff. However, surely you could argue that the only reason why any cruiserweight division and its wrestlers are seen as second class is only because it's always been portrayed to be that way.

I mean, when a monster destroys a cruiserweight as if they're nothing of course it shits all over the division. So you could say, if done correctly, it's possible to make a cruiserweight division seem important to an American audience. But then again, i'm not American so I can't really comment.

Do i think the cruiserweight division should come back? Only if it's done correctly. However, this opinion is down to my own biases because I miss watching guys like Yoshi Tatsu wrestle each week.

Just a quick OT, and this links to what Mr Amazing said (but a general comment on my behalf). I don't necessarily believe any cruiserweight title should only be held by "high flyers". I think to limit it to such implicitly demeans it. After all, some of my favourite light-heavyweight bouts were between Taka Michinoku and Brian Christopher- Lawler's boy, who's hardly a high flyer. If given the opportunity properly, in its last days Jamie Noble and Gregory Helms would've done great things with the Cruiserweight title.

personally i think they should be back the cruiserweight/lightweight title. i would be make for some great matches. Bourne, Kaval, Bryan, Morrison, Kofi, Ziggler, Ryder, Tatsu could all go after it.
But if they do bring it back i want them to do it right get some indie stars that would fit. Then bring in some X-divison stars from tna(Amazing Red, Brian Kendrick,Jay Lethal) and some AAA stars like Jack Evans and tiger Mask, and even some of the developemental guys in fcw would be great additions like (Xavier Woods, Trent Barretta, Caylen Croft) it would be epic if it was taken seriously. But the WWE is focused more on heavyweight stars like John Cena, Wade Barrett and Undertaker who are rather big compared to what the cruiserweight/lightweight wrestlers would be.
True the mic skills would be lacking on most of these stars. But if they book it correctly it would be the best part of the WWE today. For this to hapeen it would take years. Im an optimist so i think this could happen. But it wont at least not anytime soon.
