Report On Sting's Potential Role

Dave Meltzer is reporting that even though Sting hasn't officially signed on, the feeling is it's a foregone conclusion that Sting's coming to WWE. The report further states that Sting isn't going to be rushed into a match at WrestleMania XXX and the working idea right now is that he'll become the Raw General Manager.

All in all, if this is accurate and it's what WWE's going with, Sting's role looks to be the same as he's had in TNA for the last little while. I'd say the goal is also to have Sting wrestle on rare occasions. At age 54, Sting's almost certainly not gonna be a regular participant in wrestling matches, though I think they'll use him as a special attraction for SummerSlam this year and the Royal Rumble & WrestleMania next year if he's deemed healthy enough by WWE doctors.

Really, I'd be fine with that. Sting may not be in the best shape right now, so it would make no sense to have him in matches on Raw every week. He can still talk with the best of them and he does look badass in a suit + sunglasses, so I feel that a GM role would work for him.

I think the goal would be to work him up to a Wrestlemania match, so I agree with your idea of special attractions at the big pay-per-views. A lot of people want to see Taker vs Sting because of the spectacle behind leading up to the match. I think Sting vs Taker at Summerslam would make more sense than at WM because it could be used to sell the event. Yeah, it would help with buys for WM too, but it's more possible that Sting could beat Undertaker at Summerslam than in a match that we'd know the outcome to at Wrestlemania.

A pretty lackluster way to debut a character of his magnitude and longevity, especially after the years of anticipation of him growing a pair and coming over. I agree that there is no need to rush him into a WM30 match, especially with the Undertaker which would mean a debut loss is a foregone conclusion. However, people have been anticipating his arrival to compete, not to fill a role that can be filled by practically anyone, as Brad Maddox, Vickie, Guerrero, John Laurinitis, and others have displayed. And he is in his mid 50's so his window to compete is closing quickly. I hope they can get him signed in time to actually have him compete at Wrestlemania, and against a significant opponent. Such as against a returning CM Punk.

Yeah, because if there's one thing WWE needs it's another authority figure. Unless they plan on keeping Triple and Nipple H backstage (fat chance), returning Vickie to a managerial role, and finding something to do with Brad Maddox then eff every bit of that plan.

Sting is a special attraction and should be used exlusively as such. I haven't been a fan since the late 90's, but I recognize his status and value. While I believe that both have taken a hit due to him not making the leap to WWE sooner, they're still there. There's no good reason to water him down by putting him in a role that will make him a nuisance, which is what authority figures in WWE have become. And habs makes a great point-- it's a role anybody could fill anyhow. The only exception I'd make is if, like I said, every other authority figure goes away and Sting takes a president role like Jack Tunney and Gorilla Monsoon held back in the day.

Bad plan. Just let him wrestle a few times, go into the HOF, and do WCW stuff for the Network.

Punk returns after walking out in an un-professional way and gets to go against Sting? Sorry, but he'd be jobbing to a returning Jonathan Coachman before he gets close to Sting.

I saw this report aswell they have been trying to get sting for years and it looks like they finally have and now they cant think of anything better to do with him other then filling another pointless authority role.i also read another one saying that they are not treating his debut with the same level of importance as the returns of the rock or even batista.sting in wwe is something ive wanted to see for years and i think a lot of fans agree hence the massive amount of sting to wwe threads that come up around this time of year so its quite a big deal but im starting to get a bad feeling that wwe is going to completly screw this up.

Yeah not liking this idea at all, so far we have Maddox, Corporate Kane, Vickie, the Steph Infection, & Triple H, the last thing WWE needs now is yet another authority figure. There is really no point in GMs at all as long as "The Authority" is constantly running around & making all the decisions anyway. Also putting Sting in a GM position clearly screams of them setting up a Sting/Triple H feud, does anybody really wanna see that?

That's exactly what I think the point of the GM role would be, Sting debuts the night after Mania and puts The Authority in their place by giving Bryan a WWE title shot at Extreme Rules. Then we'll have a few months of Sting and Trips trying to one-up each other before finally settling it in the ring at Summerslam.

Punk returns after walking out in an un-professional way and gets to go against Sting? Sorry, but he'd be jobbing to a returning Jonathan Coachman before he gets close to Sting.

You're assuming that he actually walked out in an unprofessional manner, in the manner being speculated upon rampantly on the Internet which has not been referenced directly by either CM Punk or anyone from WWE. As a opposed to a kayfabe, storyline departure designed to give one of the biggest stars in their company a mental break, time to recuperate physically from the grind of the business, yet a tailor made storyline to "return " to once the time is right. So as to avoid a meaningless filler feud in the meantime on the Road to Wrestlemania, while guys like Bryan,Cena, and others participate in ready to go programs.

I remain convinced that the CM Punk scenario is a work, a pure kayfabe storyline which will culminate in a return at Wrestlemania. Will it be against Sting? Who knows. But I wouldn't be too quick to rule it out. And it would be a far better situation for Sting than having him become a GM, a position once held by a laptop which turned out to be Hornswoggle

RAW GM would be a complete waste of Sting.

The point to the crow gimmick is the mystery. He should be booked like the Undertaker. Not around regularly, shows up, doesn't say much, but when he does - it means something.

The more Sting talks, the less mysterious he is, and the less his gimmick works.

The fact that they would even consider this just shows how lost they are. Sting as the GM makes no sense.

Sting should be a dark character with a certain mystique around him, like the Undertaker. He shouldn't come out in a suit to book 6-man tag-team matches.

There's not much more that needs to be said.

When Sting was GM on IMPACT not too long ago, I thought he was great in the role. The difference here, however, is that WWE does not need another authority figure. It worked in TNA. There's no point. We already have HHH, Stephanie, Brad, Vickie and Kane....how many more do we need?

As already said, Sting is a special attraction and I think he should be treated as such. I don't know if we'll ever see a Sting/Taker feud, but anything would be better than seeing a power struggle of sorts between HHH/Sting.

The problem they have is how do they market Sting... Do they continue the "Crow"/Dark gimmick he has used since WCW... let's face it he is NOT going anywhere near the rafters... Sting worked for years without the bat and black coat... he had a perfectly tailored gimmick even in his "surfer" days... it stands to reason that now would be the "final" evolution of the character,

So they work with Steve Borden to reinvent Sting for the WWE.

Where WWE has failed with former WCW guys is they either portray them exactly as they were like Goldberg, Steiner and Booker initially or complete 180's like DDP. When Booker got over properly it was a total reinvention as King Booker...

I hate the over use of the bald gimmick, so not that... Face paint wise - does he need it right off the bat? or does he save it for the debut in the ring? Does he NEED the bat, bearing in mind they are building him as the "last legend" of the ring? These are all things they are thinking about before they decide who he actually faces or if he is GM or what... Cos they get that stuff wrong, they can have him pin Cena on his debut and it'll bomb... we've seen how the fans are crapping on Batista and how some even crapped on Bray Wyatt first night... it has to be a WOW Sting... not WCW's.

He did the suit thing in TNA at times, I could see his WWE "President" get up being more akin to of all things, Palmer Cannon...

Remember how that guy would show up in slacks and "dress coded" rather than suited and booted? That would fit Sting, shades of course but polo shirt/expensive Shirt, no tie... as he in the story is perhaps trying to get away from his previous image and the WWE's "Authority" mentality... Gimmick wise he comes in as "the fresh broom" rejecting previous versions of how things have been done... he's basically the same troubleshooter that Palmer Cannon was shaping up nicely to be before he became a casualty of the Hassan stuff...

Over time of course he begins to get drawn into the feuds and it starts building towards matches... or he goes right for Taker now... but NO-ONE should know what his in-ring persona will be till he steps through the curtain... he shouldn't appear in makeup etc until it is time for his first WWE match and he walks that aisle... tease it in promos and vignnettes but not show it... it shouldn't be either the Crow or the Surfer... but something totally new that will capture the fans imagination as he makes that transition and long awaited debut... Nods to the old perhaps but after 20 years of waiting - they can't just do what he's done for 15 and have it stick... it has to be a new and "ultimate" version of Sting for it to remotely work. They do it for Cena and Trips every year... so there's no problem doing it for Sting.

All that considered it does make more sense for him to be a personality first, it has to be President ala Jack Tunney, basically the board vote that Sting has ALL the power over the matches/talent etc as Monsoon and Tunney once did and cannot be overridden by Trips, Steph OR Vince for any reason... THEN it works cos you have the conflict with Trips and Steph that an "interloper" has "stolen their power", you can inevitably have Trips in his final match against Sting (which would be a good final feud for him) and then it sets Sting up for the Undertaker next year as HE makes the match perhaps with his final act as President...

Or he shows up after Taker beats whoever this year in his Crow get up... points to the Mania banner and that's it... it'd suck to do that...

Sting beging brought in and having a match with Undertaker at Summerslam instead of Wrestlemania is a great idea, mainly because Sting could then be booked to actually win the match and the result would not be a foregone conclusion. And with Summerslam held in California, Sting's home state, he should garner a great crowd reaction, which we have seen over the past few weeks is very important in Vince's eyes.
In the meantime, Sting has to be rbought in and used in a friggin decent way from the get-go, I have no clue as to how to book a 54 year old t-shirt wearing, face painted guy in todays WWE in ring action, but an authority figure he would be great, provided Maddoz/Vickie/Kane are taken off air and Sting is utilised as THE MAN

Would be a colossal waste IMO.
The role of "General Manager" is so stale and useless. Is this really what Sting is gonna buckle in his life-long holdout against WWE over? Pretty hilarious if true. Says a lot about both Sting and the WWE when it comes to major desperation.

That being said...as long as we get Undertaker vs. Sting at WM31 or something like that I will be on board. Really should be a booked match at WM30. I could care less how horrible the actual match might be. The build-up, promos, and entrances alone would probably steal the pathetic show that it's shaping up to be.

If Sting debuts after Mania, and a reset button has been hit to eliminate previous authority figures from their roles, then I like this. I also think that he could bring up Takers name weekly, saying "Oh yeah, Taker is on vacay, said he will be back shortly"... or "He has one more big match in him" once a week up until WM 31 until he finally goads Undertaker into facing Sting at Mania. Yeah, I may be stretching a bit

I like the idea of a WWE version of Sting, but he needs to be enough of the Crow (at first) to show the new members of the audience that he is a big effin deal. Keep the face paint, too. He looks like a relative of Jim Carrey without it.

I'm a Sting mark. I fully admit it. Regardless of my fandom, Sting has to make a bigger impact in his debut than being the 900th authority figure. Some of us have waited a long time for this. Make it mean something.

The cynic in me will believe he's staying in TNA until he walks through the curtain.

I don't like the idea of a GM role for Sting at all. He already played that role in TNA. They do need new GM's however, because Vickie and Maddox are horrible. The perfect replacements in my opinion would be Flair and Hogan. And it wouldn't matter to me who does which show.

It sounds to me like they want more of the "Main Event Mafia" version Sting rather than "The Crow" version of Sting. Big mistake. I've always liked the darker side of Sting, when he was "The Crow" in WCW or "The Joker" in TNA. I like the idea of him debuting at WrestleMania directly after Taker's win. The only problem is if you book Sting vs Taker at SummerSlam, how do you hold the fans' attention for 4 entire months? There's only so many staredowns and videos that can be shown.

So they'd have to start off as allies. If you can get Taker to wrestle here and there for those 4 months, then you have Sting and Taker feud with The Wyatt Family. But that's a huge if. If Taker won't be back til the road to WM31, then they can start off as enemies right off the bat. I just don't want to have Sting show up and challenge Taker to a match at WM31 and we have to wait an entire year like with Rock and Cena a few years ago.

You have to book Taker vs Sting no matter what. I would go for Mania 30. It's been the most talked about dream match for years. The build is already there. The quality of the match wont really matter. It's the spectacle of seeing these two legends going at it on the grandest stage. A lot of fans don't want to see Sting wrestle in a T-Shirt, so why not put him in the same kind of attire Taker or the Shield wears. It's not like Sting is in horrible shape. There's enough time for him to do an intense training program and pull it off. Heck Taker's been doing it the last few years. I say do it now while they can. Taker vs Sting would make Mania 30 special.

It's already been said, but WWE is overloaded with too many GMs right now. In the grand scheme of things, Vickie Guerrero, Brad Maddox, and corporate Kane (and to make matters worse, corporate Kane is so damn boring and dull) are useless in their roles, because Triple H and Stephanie can come out, and overrule their decisions, whenever they feel like it.

On top of that, Vince McMahon is still lurking in the shadows as a character, and he has the power for final say over everyone. Also, I've seen more than enough of Sting in the authority figure role in TNA.

If WWE is planning on using Sting as an authority figure, then it's a pretty lousy and anticlimactic debut for him, because the authority scene in WWE is too overcrowded right now. IF this is going to happen, WWE should wait a while before they pull the trigger. Give Sting a chance to go on his little run before he's stuck in an endless barrage of "No! I'm in charge!" shouting matches Vickie, Brad, Triple H, and Stephanie.

I know im gotta get some heat for this...but....

Sting would do a lot better in a feud with bray wyatt. To me, sting (the crow gimmick) is more related to wyatt than taker.

Bray is one of the rising stars....great gimmick, Sting its a legend and know how to play mind games....a feud between the two will benefit both parts.

I really dont see the purpose to see sting losing to the undertaker in his first wm match. WM31?...thats another story.

I give zero credibility to "reports" like this and even less to the people who accept them as fact. However they debut Sting, it will be huge and befitting of a legend and the only WCW mainstay never to appear in WWE.

The coming weeks on raw,I see Brock lesnar coming out and interrupting Christians
Match and injuring him. Taking his place in the chamber.

At elimination chamber Brock will be last to enter. Eliminating everyone except for
Randy orton(bryan will get destracted by hhh and get f-5)
Just when everyone thinks lesnar is going to pin orton the
Gong goes off and lights go out . Lights go on and undertaker is on top
Of the chamber. Brock gets distracted and Orton wins via
Roll up. Brock goes berserk and tortures Orton. Setting
Up undertaker and lesnar for mania. Either that or lesnar breaks into chamber
Just before Bryans about to win and ruins the match.

During raw and smackdown vignettes are playing.
People think its just hyping taker at mania. For some
Reason I think big show and mark Henry will interfere
But lesnar takes both of them out. Taker wins after reverse
On kimora and making him tap to helps gate. After match
while taker is celebrating. A vignette plays then lights go out.
They come back on and he's surrounded by the wyatts,
Crushing hopes of a sting debut. The wyatts beat down taker.
Lights go out. Vignette plays of old vignette with taker
Walking in the rain with coat on. Camera makes its way
From feet to head . Just as he walks in the door ge turns around
Crushing hopes of sting debut again he turns around
Shows a clear face shot of taker. He goes in the abanded house
Faces the camera. Slams the door. Then camera slowly zooms out.
Then you see some ones legs standing on the roof. The camera
Zooms in. Some one dressed in black. With trench coat in
The rain. Just before it gets to reveal his face. Taker walks
Out of the house looking around like he thinks some ones outside.
He goes in side. Then a little girl peeks out the curtain
And says " he's here "

Lights come on. Sting is in the middle of ring surrounded by the Wyatt
Family. He smiles and wipes the wyatts out with a bat.
Cleans house, turns around and taker is in his face
And they have a face off. Undertaker angry and sting
Smiling. Lights go out they're both gone when they come back on.
Crowd will lose it. Best debut ever.

At raw Vince comes out upset with triple h. And says we have
A new manager for raw. Lights go out. Come on.he death drops triple h.
At manager though he should not speak. What they should do is
Get paig from nxt to be his mouth peace. Have her
Dressed all gothic like. He whispers in her ear
She tells the message. Be good to have him quiet untill after he pins
Taker in elimination match at survivor series. So people think he's a threat
To the streak. People say he can't move in the ring.
Oh yes he can.

While I don't mind him being used in a non-wrestling role for the most part, only using him sparingly like Brock Lesnar, having him in a suit and tie would ruin his gimmick.

Like with Nash, Angle & Hardy, there are a lot of people who are not aware of TNA and thought that those guys have retired, the same has happened with Sting. When people see him in WWE they want to see the crow, the face paint, the mystique.

If you want to have him as an "authority figure", don't have him as a GM. Have another face take up an authority role and have him/her talk about bringing in someone to be the conscious of the WWE an enforcer to go against the "Regime". Then have Sting in the rafters. Dropping down to dispense justice when it needs to be done or playing mind games with heels. Calling out people and doing things from above or on the Tron.

Not sitting in an office making matches wearing a suit. Keep Sting the way most fans remember him, bring him back like he was in WCW, keep the gimmick, don't butcher it.

This could work -

After taker wins at Mania the lights go out everywhere but in one section. When they zoom in there is Sting standing and he turns around and shakes hands with Vince McMahon.

Monday night Raw we start with HHH and Steph in the ring and Stings music hits and he comes out in a suit and tie and informs HHH that while he had no intention of ever wrestling for WWE he had no choice when Vince made him an offer he can't refuse and gave him control of the show.

We could see some good PPV matches with sting and have him not lose a match all year and around January 2015 have the 1st in ring staredown of Sting V Taker set up for Mania 31
