Report: Cena likely out for WrestleMania and longer

So the updated Mania 32 card will be:

- Reigns vs. Lesnar in a 1 hour Iron Man match

- Triple H vs. Undertaker in the first ever 'Try not to die' 1 hour Iron Man match
- 45 minute promo by the Rock where he runs out of material after 15 minutes, and eventually just starts rehearsing new scenes from Ballers.
- The world's longest Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royale.
- And 4 minutes for the Divas Title match.

10/10, best Mania ever.

That match would see Lesnar hit about 80 German Suplex's and 10 F5's on Reigns and still not get a pin fall.

Just read an interesting stat: Every WWE talent that left Wrestlemania 31 as champion is currently out of action with an injury.

Rollins out, Cena and Bryan out, Cesaro and Kidd out and Nikki Bella out. So officialy Wrestlemania 31 is cursed for Champions.

Exactly. Mania will be fine. It is the rest of the shows, especially the house show numbers that WWE needs to concern themselves with.

Merchandise sales probably will get hurt pretty bad too.
Nope. The WWE brand is the draw. Then. Now. Forever.

We live in a post-star Universe. Everyone needs to accept that and swallow their gruel.

Sorry but this is simply wrong. The stars drive the product. Rip away the stars and nobody is watching or buying tickets.

Look at the secondary market for Wrestlemania tickets today. Prices on Stubhub and other secondary vendors went down with news of Cena's absence.

But again, take away the stars and you don't have a product. Nobody is watching every week or buying tickets to see Slater, Bo Dallas, Ryback, Curtis Axel and The Miz headline a show.

Cena isn't the name in the marquee.

WWE is.
Very true but right under that is usually featuring John Cena (continuing with the marquee topic).

The WWE brand sells huge on it's own true it's been around before Cena and it'll be around after he's gone. But when people see Cena's name on the card people get that more excited. Those on the fence might decide to purchase the show or ticket to see Cena while they would pass otherwise.

tl;dr: While the WWE name sells on its own having John on the card helps

Lesnar vs. McGregor. Book It.

They could do something similar to two Manias ago where Reigns fights twice in one night.

Have Reigns enter at #1 at the Rumble. Trips eliminates him and Batista wins the title.

Have Reigns beat Batista early in the night at WM and then have him face Triple H as the last match.

Card should look something like:

Reigns (w/ The Rock) vs. Batista (w/ HHH) (c) for the WWE WHC Title

* Reigns (c) vs. HHH for the WWE WHC Title

Brock Lesnar vs. Conor McGregor

The Undertaker vs. Bray Wyatt

Elimination Chamber Tag Team Title Match

Bullet Club vs. League of Nations

Chris Jericho vs. Kevin Owens

Dean Ambrose (c) vs. Alberto Del Rio (c) vs. Daniel Bryan for the Unified IC-US Title

Divas Match That Is Pointless As Long As They Have Clothes On

Non Wrestling Segments from Cena, Rock, HBK, Austin.

Seems like a decent enough card.

To be honest though, this is Wrestlemania. They might not break records, but they'd at least draw in the 70,000K range even if the main event were an average RAW scenario like Kevin Owens vs Dean Ambrose. Fans buy and reserve tickets to this shindig months before the final card is set.

Cena isn't the name in the marquee.

WWE is.

That is irrelevant. Nobody is going to events or watching for letters.

They go and watch for the stars and talent in the ring.

If there are no superstars and a lack of talent, the product suffers.

Two words: WCW/NWo years

Still, to not sell out the arena would be an embarrassment to Vince. I think that he would be horrified at the thought of leaving over 30,000 seats empty, and that's where the real intrigue lies. Can Vince just rely on the name "Wrestlemania" to sell 100,000 seats? Like people on this site, will he react with, "well who cares if Cena's hurt, Mania will sell out anyway"? I doubt it.

Personally, I think more people will decide to say "fuck it" or "we'll just go next year" as a result of all the names missing, than some people think. If it were me and I didn't live in Texas, I know I wouldn't put my money on this Mania.

How do you people not understand the value of the greatest event in live entertainment?

They still need like an 85% increase in attendance numbers to sell out AT&T. They didn't even sell out Atlanta. I think you're over-hyping the Mania brand a bit.

This is very true.

And you can expand by looking at merchandise. Nobody is walking around in shirts that simply say "WWE" or have the logo on them.

They buy shirts of their favorite superstar(s) and I am assuming a vast majority are of guys who won't be at Mania: Cena, Rollins, Orton, Daniel Bryan (likely)...

For every person who is just a big WWE fan and don't care who is performing I would venture a guess there are 2-4 people who go based on who is performing.

As an example, I went to the RAW in Chicago on July 6. Mainly because Brock Lesnar was there. Without him I wouldn't have gone. Furthermore, WWE knew they needed star power which is why they had Lesnar do that event.

Because that night, the rest of the card was: No Bray Wyatt at all, no Rollins match, no Kevin Owens match, Dean Ambrose vs. Bo Dallas, no Kane/Triple H/Stephanie even appearing. And a main event of Cena vs. Cesaro. They knew they needed Brock or the event wouldn't have been worth the price of admission.

Isn't Mania usually sold out months in advance?

I think the card matters as far as whether or not people are gonna watch (which doesn't matter now because of the Network), but not if people are gonna show up. That's a trip that people usually decide on months or at least weeks in advance.

I think people are speculating about Cena being gone just because of what it means to the card (Taker has to get a new opponent, which means that whoever that guy was facing has to get a new opponent and so on and so forth) and what Cena/Rollins/Orton/etc. being out until around Summerslam at the earliest means for the structure of who's gonna get pushed for the next 6-7 months.

Have they sold all the tickets for this years WrestleMania yet?

If you go to ticketmaster you will find there are, indeed, tickets still available for the event.

One thing I will wonder if they do sell out that massive stadium is how many tickets were sold and how many were given away to family, friends and corporate sponsors.

I say this because I just cannot see any way Vince lets people see that his product couldn't sell out WrestleMania.

He wanted this venue because getting that many people in there would be a massive bonus to the company and his ego. If it doesn't fill up, it will be somewhat embarrassing. Keep in mind, just 6 months ago we were looking at a card that featured all of the currently healthy guys plus Sting, Rollins, Orton, Cena, Rock, rumors of Rousey, rumors of a Stone Cold return. It was shaping up to be a truly star-studded event.

And now, not so much...

Mania 31 drew nearly 80,000. Set the all time gate record for a Wrestlemania. And set a new record for the Levi Stadium in San Francisco. And yet the buildup for the event sucked all kinds of ass. Based on that alone nobody had much faith in Mania doing that well last year. I'd say even with all the injuries, Vince still has a shot at a sellout this year.

They have a shot without a doubt. But I get the sense that anything other than a sell-out will be looked at as a failure in the eyes of Vince and other top execs. All I'm saying is, don't expect Vince to lay back and rely on the Wrestlemania name to sell 100,000+ seats, especially now with John Cena out of the mix.
