Recent Report of McMahon thinking Rhodes "overacts"

Getting Noticed By Management
Is anyone else disappointed with this?

PWTorch.com is reporting that the reason why Cody Rhodes hasn't received a major WWE push is because Vince McMahon is not confident in the superstars' abilities. "Cody Rhodes is capable of a breakout, but Vince McMahon just can't commit to him," said a WWE source. "He thinks he overacts."

I think this sucks. I'm a big Cody fan and I really thought he was on a role. One minor thing I'd like him to change is the weird ass tights he wears during matches... they go up to his like nipples =/... But anyway, do you guys really think he overacts? I just thought it was part of his gig, to be overly cocky. Don't get me wrong, Vince obviously knows LIGHTYEARS more than I do about anything like this so it's not that I'm disagreeing with him, persay, I just wish the article elaborated on what Vince was talking about. I hope Rhodes still ends up getting a ME push...

That's rather confusing to think of really. Especially considering the fact that when Cody brings it over the edge of "dashing", and all the cockiness he carries around with his new-found gimmick, it really just makes him better.

If Cody Rhodes has to hold back on the acting of his character, I think it could hurt the gimmick more than anything. Cody is great because he overacts, because he puts almost too much soul into the gimmick. If he stops doing that, the gimmick will stop working to it's full potential.

Also, to not be confident in his abilities is pretty odd as well. Considering the fact that Cody has truly shined through with his latest gimmick change. The microphone skills has shot to the moon compared to what he had before, as well as the in-ring abilities have been pretty good. The look isn't the greatest, but he's still muscular, and slightly leaning towards the possibility of a total package.

This is what Vince needs to realize if he plans on doing something with Cody, to keep him in the spotlight and keep letting him act out.

Wow... I can't believe that I agree with Vince. Matter of fact, I was just discussing this with someone this weekend. I think Cody has the look, character, legacy, and means to be over but he needs to relax with his gimmick. He's just too over-the-top right now. We understand what he's trying to be but from an actor's standpoint he's borderline irritating with his overacting.

Good call by Vince here.

I think that Cody Rhodes has improved tremendously since his days in Legacy when every thought Dibiase was going to be more successful and that has not been the case. Cody has been way more impressive then Dibiase and I think that is due to his new DASHING gimmick which is getting him turns of heat and he is playing his character well but he does over act and is a little bit over-the-top and if he can tone it down a bit I think it could lead to even more success in the future for "Dashing" Cody Rhodes.

Well, what I take from that is that they believe Cody has the tools to suceed. It's just one thing that's holding him down which he needs to fix. I personally find this to be encoraging and that they feel Cody can be a main eventer b/c I do too. I think this new tag team will help both Cody and Drew improve in their respective aspects that need improving. He's only 24 years old so he has a lot of time ahead of him to do so.

The tights are annoying,
But I'll sacrificice a small goat to get him to put on some knee pads.
He looks like a damn idiot walking down to the ring.
But after I finish bashing his ring wear,
I really like Cody.
Though I'll be honest,
When someone hits him in the face with this new dashing gimmick,
He does overreact,
But Striker in the background screaming, "NOT THE FACE", makes it all better.
So I see where this is comming from, from that standpoint,
Untill I see things like this,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hj4XbOttczI,
Those types of overreactions are just fine in my book

For sure. After all, this is a re-make of Lex Luger's "Narcissus" angle. The difference is that Cody does his own talking while preening in front of the mirror, whereas Luger had Bobby Heenan doing the vocal work for him. (And wasn't it damn uncomfortable listening to The Brain as he ranted and raved about another man's body?:icon_eek: Look at those pecs! Look at those abs!)

Honestly, I don't know how Cody could do the angle without over-acting. The role seems to call for it, and I agree with Ferbian that it makes Cody better.

Plus, I have to admit I enjoy watching Cody perform as the "anti-Dusty." His father was involved in macho stuff like Bunkhouse Brawls and Texas Death Rope matches......and then, here's his son, teaching us how to pluck our eyebrows.

Dusty's other son carved a niche for himself that was totally unlike his father's. Now, the other son is doing it. I think it's terrific.

Wow!! I can't believe I agree with Vince AND D-Man! (well, in part) Exalted company indeed!

Horrible gimmick, awful look, don't get it, started fast forwarding thru his matches now due to excessive tedium, shame, because I miss McIntyre's matches whom I quite like. On a positive note, i've been whizzling past the *yawn* Hart *yawn* Dynasty *yawn* too... so thanks for THAT Cody old son!

Hope Cody gets future endevoured soon.

You might have guessed that I dislike him. It's not the gimmick making me feel that way, it's apathy to his work.

Balls!

I, on the other hand, can't believe I disagree with D-Man! As a huge fan of cartoony, over-the-top personalities and of Dashing's hilarious gimmick and silliness, I don't want him to stop "over"acting. In this era of the WWE without many stand-out personalities, Dashing is a breath of fresh air to me and one of my favorite parts of any program. He's unique. If Dashing were to cut back on his personality, he would just be another Drew McIntyre. The acting is what makes Rhodes Dashing!

Honestly, I don't see why personality is a bad thing. The only thing I would tweak about Cody's character is to give him a very aggressive side that comes out whenever anyone slights him or touches his face. It would be like the personality he showed on the episode of NXT where Husky Harris was eliminated and Rhodes just went batshit crazy and started running down everything and tearing things up.

Doc, I don't believe you're seeing the difference between a Cody Rhodes character and a Drew McKintyre character. Drew is very slow, evil, and borderline UNDER-acting. However, Cody is the equivalent of giving someone 17 cans of Jolt cola and then asking them to portray a "Dashing" gimmick.

You're thinking of this too far into the extreme. No one is asking Cody to not have a personality... we're merely asking for him to back it off ever-so-slightly. Since he's a heel, the way he acted with Husky on NXT was perfect for when he gets angry. But when he's just being a happy-go-lucky "dashing" wrestler, his antics are really over-the-top. I understand how you prefer "cartoon" type gimmicks so this is just different strokes for different folks. But to a majority audience, that kind of acting is labeled as "cheesy" no matter how much you prefer it.

Ah, Doc & D-Man......If I read any more Drew bashing, I'm challenging you guys to a 3-Way Cage Match......... and I'll take down both of you whippersnappers at once. You don't want to mess with me.

And you're right, Doc, Cody is cartoon-y and over the top, because that's what the character he's playing has to be. But I'll say this; if Vince McMahon doesn't like the portrayal, it probably will get dialed down, and that would probably make it unfeasible to continue. If it happens, I hope they come up with something else for Cody that's good because he's fun to watch in the ring.

I'm assuming that the report refers more to this kind of thing:

Than how Rhodes portrays his actual gimmick. Which, to be fair he has stopped doing. There's also no substance to this rumour, given that Cody has been given a hell of a lot of TV time since he became "Dashing", been winning matches clean and appearing on every important show.

As for DCR being a breakout, it's very possible that he could be. But I don't think he is going to be a massive star any time soon, and nor does he need to be. He's 25, and has another 15-20 years to be a star. No need to push him to the moon and back, sometimes a slow push to the top is best.

I hope they don't change "Dashing" Cody Rhodes' character one bit. He's easily my favorite thing on Smackdown right now. His promos are hilarious and his music fits him perfectly. The only thing he needs are some damn knee pads. He just looks queer out there without them. But as a huge mark they better not mess with him at all. I'm already concerned they might slow his push by teaming him with Drew McIntyre. I can't stand that guy.

All I can say is that I love Cody with his new Dashing persona. I just wish he'd get knee pads. Even if he wore them practically down just under his knees like he did before. (Which annoyed me) His theme song and entrance is definitely one of the best ones in a long while, IMO. It's catchy and I'm contemplating getting a ringtone. :p

Don't like that he's paired with Drew now. To me, Cody just seems to be saddled with carrying Drew since the guy has no personality.

I was really angry when I read this. Cody oversells, so it's extremely entertaining to watch. HIAC 2009 was one of my favorite matches with rhodes and dibiase vs dx. i mean, rhodes sold getting hit in the face with a sludge hammer beautifully.:worship:
Now with his dashing gimmick, I love watching smackdown, especially since he's tag champion with my 3rd favorite wrestler, Drew McIntyre. Usually, who vince does not like, he fires. He has the ability to do that, but it's not fair. :banghead:
But, I don't expect the dashing one to be fired anytime soon, since he is tag team champion and getting so much heat.

On wrestlezone, there is a post that Vince thinks cody rhodes overreacts / oversells. Usually, Vince fires who he doesn't like. THATS HIS GIMMICK! Rhodes is a heel, and he overreacts to make the babyface look good. Please vince, don't fire cody. He entered a gret tag team, has the look and the mic skills.

I'm not so sure he'll get fired now. He might still get that push, too. I mean, Vince just crowned him as a Tag Team Champion. Not to mention he tagged him up with someone he loves, Drew McIntyre. Maybe he's doing this so that Rhodes will stop overacting since McIntyre HARDLY acts and may rub off on him. However, I doubt that. I'm thinking maybe this is just an overblown comment that Vince made. He probably said something like "Cody really overacted last night" or something.

that footage of Rhodes is definitely overkill lol. but my issue with him has always been his physical attributes and the knee pad situation. first he was old school and wore em below the point they were designed to protct now he lacks them at all. During Legacy I always wished Cody would bulk up like Ted. But all n all I live his new Dashing persona. And a mirror on the back of his jacket is classic. I think u r all over reacting here, he should be flamboyant and overzealous. I think Dusty is proud.

"Dashing" Cody Rhoades is a unique original character still in his rookie years that isn't relying on his father's gimmick in order to get over with the crowd. What's not to like?

I think Cody is where he should be right now: A tag team champion with a metrosexual agenda. He kind of reminds me of Zoolander (please tell me I'm not the only one that sees a comparison) with his over-the-topness. And honestly I wouldn't have his character portrayed in any other way. How can you take a guy giving you beauty tips seriously??? He has to be at least a little bit comical otherwise he would look kind of like former WWE star Rob Conway or Sylvain Grenier for that matter, who both wound up jobbing and then released.

Cody doesn't have the same build as Luger did, so I don't think comparing the two is fair. Cody isn't pumped with 'roids and Luger wasn't giving tips on how to look like Luger.

So bar none Cody Rhoades is one of the only reasons I tune in to Smackdown. Many pretty boy gimmicks have popped in and out of the history of the WWE, but I would say Cody does the best modern portrayal while still doing it his way. If Vince doesn't like it though I'm pretty sure Rhoades will tone it down a little, though I think it's strange for him to say that now that Cody is holding a championship.
