Ps3 Slim

Super Crazy

CABS ARE HEEEERREEE!!
Okay I recently have divulged into wanting a Ps3 slim. Everyone at work was telling me they do not have fans though. So I did some research. I looked for teardowns and pics of it and any other useful information I could find. Not only does it have a fan but the fan has 17 blades. Not only does the fan shoot the hot air out of the system but it also contains a heatsink which helps to dissapate the hot air.

The reason I am posting in here is because I have now gotten into two huge arguments over it with staff at work. They all say that customers call complaining asking to return the sytem claiming it has no fan and overheats. I have said multiple times that there is a fan and even mentioned the heat sink. It just really pisses me off because even though I may not be the hugest techno-geek or the biggest gamer in the world the person I have been pretty well debating with thinks she is right even though she doesn't even play video games that often. In my opinion she knows nothing about it and just wants to prove me wrong. Anyway I was curious as to whether or not any of you had heard such random accusations about the sytem too or if it is just me?

Here are some links I have looked at for proof :

And here are some images of the teardowns :

The Problem with the Slim version of the PS3 is pretty much the same with its predecessors, The reason sony makes the product is to hopefully fase out their first model and make suggested "Improvements", the negative is the parts, in order to make the product they cut costs, and when doing such they end up using cheaper parts and compressing the machine.

The danger i see here is the PS3 is having the same problem as the XBOX 360 and overheating, and if that happens Sony maybe over run with complaints about their product from avid gamers, I don't mean switch it on a couple of time gamers, i mean the guys who spend their days and nights playing the thing which inturn will cause the over heating due to overuse of the product and not having a fan system in place to keep the processor cool, if thats the case then we may have a problem here.

Im just saying

Watchdog is a UK consumer affairs programme. Last night it had the PS3 on it, there's a problem with a lot of them called the yellow light of death. If you go through Sony to fix this it can cos £128 to fix it.

Hopefully, the PS3 doesn't suffer from overheating. That's the whole reason why I'm getting it over the 360.

possibly similar to the 360 problem with the red light of doom, processor overheating due to not having a proper fan system inplace, IE the fan in place is too small to cool down the rather large processor, it gets hot very quickly due to the fact that its processing speed is tremendous, Sony will probably end up in the deep end for this even being sued by people who baught the product.

buy the normal PS3, the previous model, don't buy the slim or you will be faced with the same problem, the only way to fix it is to put in a bigger cooling system and Sony are being cheap b***tards

I completely agree. While making it smaller and more compact the parts have probably become cheaper. But that's the price they pay when they try to phase out their old system and potentially the competition. But even then if the fan was cheap as I said it has a heat sink and between the fan and the heat sink it should be able to keep the system cool.

I too have a fear that Sony will be having to fix many of these systems right away though. One of my main points in my argument was that even if there is a problem with the system that all systems have problems when they first come out. Look at what happened with the Xbox 360 when it first came out. So many were sent back because of bugs and the piss off Red Ring Of Death.

Eventually the bugs were worked out though and now very few are returned or sent in for repairs. I bought a 360 approximately 7 months ago and have had no problems with it yet. A few people around me keep telling me that I will have a problem somewheres down the road.

This is why I am holding off on buying a Ps3 or a Ps3 Slim because I want to make sure there are no bugs withhin the system and hear/read a positive review of it. I feel as though with every system that is rushed out there will be problems though. As I said the 360 was rushed and had tons of issues. I mean just look at the Nintendo Wii. How many of those have been sent back for repairs or returned. I bet there wasn't even a 1/3 of what the Xbox's were.

Yeh they set up a van outside Sony HQ and did free repairs, it was simple to fix but took 30 mins to do it.

Just keep your PS3 in a ventilated area not in a cabinet or something.

Is there any way to get more memory on the bigger PS3. I was going for the Slim because of the larger amount of memory. I'm a big sports fan, and I save lots of replays and no doubt I'll play the fuck out of SvR 2010 with created characters, Road To WrestleMania, Create-A-Story Mode, etc.

I can see this problem persisting until Sony wisens up and works on getting a bigger fan installed Lee, trust me they will either discontinue the model and go back to the existing model or attempt to introduce another model to take its place.

I hate it when companies attempt to do things on the cheap.

You can get a 120GB PS3. That's the max big one I know of.

But do you really need that much space unless you're saving music etc onto it?

The Sony company will not recall these new systems I do not think. What they lack for in size of fan they attempted to make up for using blades. As I mentioned in the opening post the fan has 17 blades apparently. I think they were hoping it would help push the air out faster.

There are still 80GB and 120 GB ones available, they aren't making any new ones but try and look in some stores where you know they'll have some left. Chances are they'll be down to the $299 price tag as that was cut two weeks before the slim was released.

I'd go to Walmart JKO. The ones by me have a good deal. You can get the 80 GB Ps3 and Infamous and two other games ( the likes of which I cannot remember ) all for $399.

I'm not sure for US stores, you'll know better than me but look around.

UK wise, Currys, Argos, Morrisons and HMV all still have them in.

see how much you can get for the biggest laptop hard drive, there is a slot where the existing drive is installed and all you have to do is unclick it (gently) install the new drive and there you go more memory, I think the highest you can get now is 1tb, but it will be expensive, and if the PS3 can actually partition the drive, that is dependant on the firmware itself and if the machine is programmed to do as such.

My suggestion is check out some tech forums and see what people have done to their machines.

Remember Google is your friend :D

Having worked in video games for two years before I changed jobs, even with a store insurance you still can't make mods. The new consoles have seals on where the mods are made, if the seal is broken = no repair.

After a long playing session or movie, take the disc out leave your console on for ten/twenty minutes. This will allow it to cool down.
