Pro Wrestling Pet-peeves?

Non-Title matches!! I hate Non-Title matches. I must have said that on about 112 different posts. Instead of Non-Title matches, put the Champion in the announcers booth and have him do commentary and stick the number one and number two contenders in a match or something.

Singles Champions in Tag Team match on Raw or Smackdown. I don’t like these either, but not as bad as Non-Title Matches!! The term “Non-Title Match” for a Champion is the ultimate oxymoron.

Team Blue on Raw and Team Red on Smackdown, especially Michael Cole. There are so many others out there that could be the “Voice Of The WWE”. Why Michael Cole?? If he wasn’t a Heel, and just a play-by-play commentator, maybe I’d accept him being on both Red and Blue shows. I love (more time for Main Eventers) and hate (less time for lower carders) the Super WWE SuperShow, but not as much as I hate Non-Title Matches!!

What about when a challenger has to defeat the Champion in a Non-Title Match to get a Title shot?? What the hell is that??

I also kind of dislike Triple Threat Championship matches cause of the fact that the Champion doesn’t have to be pinned to lose the Title. Why not make it a Triple Threat Elimination match and save the regular, one fall to a finish, Triple Threat matches for Non-Title Matches!?

Headbutts! The worst looking move in wrestling, and the prime offenders are Mark Henry and Big Show, putting their hand on their opponents head and briefly waving their head in the general direction of their opponent, while pushing said opponents head away, as they take a terrible looking bump! It is so fake looking its laughable, and I should know Im from Glasgow, headbutts are so common place here, that there actually a sign of affection (google glasgow kiss) :)

That's done because it's how it's supposed to be. Pinfalls are supposed to be with shoulders as flat as possible. It's basic pro-wrestling 101, hell it's even a rule for amateur wrestling.

---

My biggest pet peeve is that stupid ass "WHAT?!" chant that people always want to do. A lot of times it'll ruin everything good about a promo and just make the whole crowd look stupid. There's only been a number of people who have been able to work with that shitty chant, but even then, they most likely forgot their lines and had to go off their head. Which isn't always a bad thing because basic mic skills should be a know how in WWE, but even still, someone like Drew McIntyre won't exactly fit in the mold of great mic workers.

After that, it would have to be people claiming that women's or tag wrestling is boring or stale. I've yet to see a bad women's match or tag match in the past year, unless it was at an indy show... and I watch a lot of matches throughout the year. If you ask me, a lot of women's and tag matches are way better than what people claim them to be, but because people are too stuck up and stubborn to admit it, they instantly bash them. Case and point, the WWE Tag and Divas title matches at NoC were two of the greatest matches on the card, yet nobody gave them any props.

:wtf: womens and WWE tag team wrestling are better than matches that get 5 stars from dave metzler? looks like somebody is anti-smark!

Another one for me is the ending to ladder matches, they are just so stale stale. Compared to the spots earlier in the match usually the ending comes off as week. Miz's money in the bank win is the ultimate example of this pet peeve of mine. He tips orton off the ladder in the same high spot we see at the beggining of nearly EVERY ladder match. The TLC matches on the other hand do the endings right and have an awesome looking spot before the finish of the match. Ladder match endings should have more pizaz than just have a bland an unexciting ending.

Duh. I know the wrestler's shoulders have to be on the mat, but this isn't amature wrestling, it's professional wrestling. It doesn't need to be real, instead, pro-wrestling needs the illusion of being real. In the example I gave, Swagger hooked the leg too tightly and his opponent's shoulder raised off the ground but it was barely noticable. The ref just stopped counting without the kickout. It took away from the ending of the match. The finish went from holy shit, The Gutwrench to holy shit, The Gutwrench wait, did he just kickout, oh ok its over.

Here's the problem, as lame as that may have looked, if that ref had let it count then there would've been a shit load of people would complain that the ref sucked or something silly like that. Besides, it's not like it was entirely the ref's fault on that one. I get that the pin was hooked tight, but even then it's the worker's job to keep his shoulder's to the mat. Can't get mad at the ref for doing his job... unless you're The Awesome Truth :p

This has just started about 4 months ago, but when Cena runs to the ring, just at the moment he slides under the bottom rope, the camera changes to a high angle so you can see Cena from above, and the heels quickly leaving the ring. I don't know why, but I hate that they do this. It's a horrible angle, as you can barely see the wrestlers.

The "WHAT" chants. I've been saying this for years now. I bet Vince wishes he never would have started that gimmick for SCSA. The only wrestlers who can get legit heat from it by acknowledging it were The Undertaker (one time he said "Say WHAT if you sleep with you sister," or something along those lines). The crowd started to, then they were like "Ohh!" R-Truth has done alright with it by saying "Don't WHAT me!!! SHUT UP!" The crowd goes into an instant boo most of the time. Here's the deal, it ruins a perfect promo to get more heat on a heel. I think of Nash, Mark Henry, Christian, and Truth as of late. The most retarted thing is, most of the fans chanting What weren't even around in 2001 when it started! Freaking morons. I bet these ******s are missing half of what is said because they're waiting to say What. At least in TNA the fans know better.

Anytime the WWE shows the professional team(s) in teh city they're in sitting front row acting like morons. Are these athletes even wrestling fans, or did they just get a free ticket?

PPV's every freaking 3 weeks!!!

You don't see this much anymore, except for Ryder, but back from 2001 - 2007, everyone wore sunglasses in the ring. At one time, it was HHH and Edge I think cuting a promo in the ring, and both had shades on. It looked ridiculous!

And finally, the repetitive phrases. "At the end of the day," "let me make this perfectly (or crystal) clear to you," "I don't think he's ever given up in his career" - said by Lawler most of the time. Really King? You don't think he has ever tapped out? It just gets old.

When hard working talented wrestlers like Vladimir Kozlov and Chris Masters get released, talented superstars like Drew McIntyre and Yoshi Tatsu never get air time but guys like Mr. Perfect's untalented son and Jennifer Hudson's husband get Tag Team titles and we see them on Raw almost every week. Myself and others were saying it long before King was on TV, I cannot stand those un charismatic bozos and I cannot wait until they are Future Endeavored.

One thing that I feel is ridiculous is the referee checking the participants before the matches. :wtf: They don't actually expect guys to be hiding chairs or sledgehammers in their tights, do they??

The "you can't wrestle" chant really irritates me. When it is directed at someone like Khali, its OK but Cena can sure as hell "wrestle".

Almost all non-American guys debuting as heels. Also whenever they cut a promo, the crowd chanting USA really pisses me off.

Regal always has a pair of brass knuckles down the front of his tights but no one wants to go there.

Rey's "splash" finish he does now, actually anything Rey does in the ring irks me.

I really hate when the commentators don't talk about the match that's going on in the ring. I don't mean when they are talking about other storyline stuff, i mean when they bicker at each other for saying the wrong thing and call each other dumb. It just makes them all look bad and takes away from the whole show.

Another pet peeve of mine is when really childish and unfunny humour is used in promos, as a way of insulting the opponent. I am not talking about the edgy controversial humour that guys like D-X used back in the day, I mean the type of crappy insults and jokes made by John Cena on a regular basis.

I know that the wrestlers cant go to the lengths they used to be able to do in the past, and that the humour has to cater for the target market, but I really cringe when this happens, and in my opinion, the material Cena is given to work with is a big reason why he remains so unpopular with alot of the older viewers. He is based towards children and this shows in his promo content.

If Cena was given a more adult character, moved away from his multi-coloured T-shirts, and was given better quality humour in his promos (if any is needed at all) he would be given more respect.

I have immediately thought of another.

Wrestlers coming out to wrestle wearing their own t-shirts

I have nothing against wrestlers wearing shirts in matches if it fits in with their character, such as Raven or Sandman, but I hate and I mean HATE when guys like CM Punk or Triple H come out to wrestle a match wearing their own merchandise (Punk, Cena, Sting recently etc I am looking at you). Yeah, we know what your name is, it says in on the fucking titantron behind you, on the name plate that comes up when you are walking down the ramp, the announcer says it, the commentators say it..... we dont need you to have it on a shirt too.

I know its just advertising a piece of merchandise, but it pisses me off. Especially when CM Punk does it while wearing his black shirt with black trunks, and it looks like he is naked underneath his shirt, with no pants on.

I dont wanna see that. Stop doing it please.

When families get involved. I know it's all done in kayfabe and to make feuds more personal but it really bothers me when one is talking shit about another's family member especially if they are deceased like the Cole-Lawler feud earlier this year or when a wrestler's family witnesses them getting their asses handed to em up close & personal like when Punk slapped Rey in front of his family. It's all done in bad taste but even if it were done in good taste, it would still be a pet-peeve.

I am surprised no one has mentioned the nature boy yet. His promos this year have just pissed me off greatly. I also can't stand that if you so much as breathe on Flair he will just start bleeding like a stuck pig. (Sarcasm intended). I also wish that Cody would wear knee pads but that is another story for another thread eventhough I am sure that there have been fifty of them already.

Another one of mine is when a wrestler does such a shitty pin on a person just to keep the match going. I mean when the wrestle hits a big move to finish of someone (not a finisher or signature but a power move) and they crawl over without any intention to of hooking a leg to make the kick out look good they just do such a shitty pin. UGH it really bothers me. Also when the ref counts and he throws his hand super high in the air because the wrestler on the ground who is suppose to kick out at two has enough strength to actually kick out.

I cannot stand shitty pins that kill momentum of the match along with overly long 3 counts.

Repetitiveness - This kind of goes with the selling thing but why oh why do we see generic repeats of the same thing over and over! Easy example - Attack occurs in ring - either heel or face comes in and attacks someone in the ring, afterwards one person exits ring and walks up ramp backwards while person in the ring stays there either fuming with anger or simply staring at there opponent.. Why is it like this every time? Why cant for one time, the person in the ring exit the ring and stand on the ramp as well, closer to the opponent, then they call brawl on the ramp, or if the person in the ring was fuming with anger why would they stay there? Wouldn't it be more believable for them to exit the ring and chase after the person on the ramp - hell bent on revenge..

Announcing - IMO announcers are there to call the action that is going on in the match - The PBP announcer should only be calling moves, interferances, providing some occasional facts etc. but not glamorizing saying 'new champion! new champion' or anything ridiculous and lame like that. The Colour announcer is there to provide, well you guessed it: some 'colour' to the commentary, to make it sound more interesting - What they should not do is pick sides and constantly glamorize wrestlers (Jerry Lawler REALLY pisses me off these days by the way he blindly glamorizes and kisses up to Cena, Why do we need to hear this? Its annoying and mind-numbingly lame and I were an announcer working with him I would seriously choke him out with Justin Robert
s tie if he kept praising Cena and the good guys constantly, same with Cole and the bad guys) Also they talk about stuff that is not directly related to the match or the wrestlers in the match (such as excessive plugging of the main event). Commentary needs a lot of work - WWE and TNA included to make it what it is meant to be - calling of the action in WRESTLING matches.

I could go on for so long with all this, there are so many things - like unnessecary unbelievable and repetitive selling but unfortunately I don't have all day but I guess we will just have to live with what they give us..

I can't stand when the announcers and wrestlers keeping using the word TONIGHT, putting special emphasis on the word. If I've paid my money, have my butt in the seats and you're issuing a challenge, you know I'm not going to be at the arena TOMORROW, so why would I ever think you want to fight somebody anytime other than TONIGHT? And after the match is made, if I'm watching on TV, I don't need to know coming in and out of every segment that those two guys are getting it on....TONIGHT! The promo was supposed to be good enough to make me anticipate the match enough already, so ENOUGH ALREADY!!!

Another thing that chafes my hide is, if you're going to have Cena talking to the '4th wall' before he runs down the ramp, at least make the camera mic loud enough to hear what he's saying to us. I know, the crowd is so loud, but whatever he's sayin' is supposed, most of the time, to sell that fact. Not an effective message if the message ain't heard.:banghead:

I like this thread, just been reading through and I gotta almost completely agree with Matth3w, Triple Naitch, Hamler and Stitch, as well as King Patrick's bob-on assessment of non-title matches, hatehabs' point about Rey's middle rope set-up and especially Snake's point about families getting dragged into angles, that shit just leaves me cold.

Still, no point me showing up purely to nod and agree, I's got my own peeves too...

1 - The Atomic Drop:
This one just doesn't look effective. EVER.

2 - Visibly loose submission holds:
John Cena, I'm looking at your STF, but there are many offenders. It can't be that hard to make it look like you're applying a bit of pressure to someone without actually maiming them, can it?

3 - Redoing spots:
C'mon, do I even need to explain this? It's just fuckin' amateur, learn to work damn it! Go with the flow and do something else if you botch. Keep it believable.

I'm sure there are plenty more where that came from, but I think that's enough moaning for now.

I'm going to agree with Mike Killam on this one i heard Hogan tell flair it was the biggest night of their lives i was sitting there thinking really so winning the championship for the 1st time in your careers was not as big as this? i mean like it was said yea sell the importance of the storyline but don't try to insult my intelligence by saying that something happening in 2011 is more important then something say from 15 or 16 years ago when the nwo formed it just insults my intelligence as wrestling fan.

non-title matches are way up there on my list, as well as bad submissions that are obviously doing nothing, especially when the guy in the hold is overselling it...ugh

I hate when....every wrestler in the wwe, who never in any other circumstance throw a wild looping right hook that spins then around when they miss, somehow, magically find it to be a good idea to do this to john cena, who can't possibly find another way to catch them and drop them on their backs to set up his 5 knuckle shuffle. zero creativity there.

also, i really seriously hate when somebody who has been knocked to the ground scoots over to a better position/angle to take the splash/ssp/whatever from the top rope...looks terrible and very obvious.

Hmmm, I was kinda hoping this thread would pick up a little more momentum, Ah well, might as well continue my list of personal beefs, this time I'll concentrate on what TNA have been doing to piss me off...

4 - Obvious blading

Right, come on now, TNA. Surely you plan your blade jobs, do you not? Perhaps someone in the back could maybe communicate a little with the production team, letting them know when not to get a close-up of a wrestler who just so happens to be in the process of slicing his own face open. That'd be nice, now, wouldn't it?

5 - The convoluted and more than slightly unbelievable power struggle

Ugh.

6 - The Impact Zone crowd

The single biggest reason TNA should take their show on the road more often. Never have I seen a more contrary bunch of mongoloids gathered in one place. Every. Damn. Week.

That's enough for now, I reckon I'll have a focus on WWE once I've caught up on the last few months of programming.

Surprised this one hasn't been mentioned yet...

"In this very ring..."

It's bad enough when it's "Tonight, in this very ring..." That must be why the cameras are on that very ring and not a ring in the parking lot, eh?

But, what REALLY gets me is when they say "In two weeks... At WrestleMania... In this very ring..."

Now, I know there's a CHANCE that "that very ring" could be the one that they set up for the WrestleMania in two weeks, in a completely different city and venue than they are tonight, but who would know if it wasn't "that very ring."

You don't hear that in football and they play half of their games on the same field.

Just annoys the hell out of me...

-Bill

- How formulaic tag matches are. No wonder the division died, they're always the same match! Miz/Truth vs Bourne/Kingston was a good example of how to do it a bit different (although that was just the finish really)

- The contrived way that in multi-man matches, all moves are magically 1000 times more damaging so that they can get the focus onto just two guys and switch them out. It ends up more or less like a tag match except everyone's against each other. And instead of being on the apron the other guys are outside just kind of rolling around on the floor 'n' shit. And gasping like that Family Guy bit.

- WWE.com exclusives. I like them, they're really good - but no fucker apart from me ever watches them! These add to midcarders' characters quite a lot, they should be aired on damn TV!

what is a mongoloid? Is MONG an abrievation for it? I was called a mong once.

anyway back to the pet peeve. When the ref already counts one before he gets on the mat. Sometimes when a pin is being done the ref will make a sound from his body sliding on the mat which sounds just like when he is supposed to count and I can't tell you how many times it has tricked me into thinking the match was over (maybe that's the point:lmao:).

The Divas division being so caught up in their looks.

I don't care WTF you look like, quit ****ing it up and just f**king wrestle already!!!
