This surely applies to all but the top 7 teams in the league? Sure, there will be teams like Wigan and Swansea that manage to win something out of the blue one year but European football has proved to be largely detrimental to teams who weren't really anticipating it and their league position the next year.
Its not good enough. People seem to assume we're a small mid-table club that should be happy where we are instead of the team with the 3rd largest attendance in the country.

I wouldn't have necessarily said small but a mid-table club isn't much of an exaggeration really. In the same boat as Everton, to a degree, in that there is some historic pedigree there and the clubs want to do well for their fans but just haven't been able to sustain it.
The difference is Everton are a stable, financially restricted club who buy well & respect their fans. If you gave Everton the gate receipts Newcastle get, they'd be pushing for the title. They wouldnt be the fucking shambles that Newcastle are.
The club is a reflection of the owner, a fat, staggering drunk & glorified 2nd-hand car salesman with no ambition other than to sell crap & make money. At this stage I would accept relegation if it'd get him to sell up & fuck off.
