Obama approves of gay marriage

I actually doubt that Obama's position on gay marriage is really going to be all that big of an issue.

No dude, there are plenty of right-wing Christians who will base their vote solely on someone's stance on Abortion and Gay Marriage. That is a fact.

It goes both ways too, though. My biggest gripe about the gay community is that they only care about their own. There's no doubt most of them will vote solely based on someone's stance on Gay Marriage as well. And that's wrong. It's far from being the most important issue, including to those who are gay.

I don't get why you don't just take the British route with it. Legalise gay marriage but call it something else like "civil partnership".

As any gay rights campaigner would tell you, gay marriages and civil partnerships are not the same thing. It's a shame that Cameron and Clegg have shat the bed on that score, but they're doing a spectacularly good job of pleasing nobody, so why change things? Wouldn't want the elderly homophobes on the backbenches to have their feathers ruffled!

I maintain that this election will be won or lost in June, when the Supreme Court issues it's ruling on Obamacare, either giving Obama his biggest success or his biggest embarrassment. If Supreme Court rules in his favor, no way he loses. If the Supreme Court rules against, no way he gets re-elected.

Personally, I think that as US elections seem to be won and lost by swing-voters, Obama will win easily by emphasising "Osama Bin Laden is Dead; General Motors is not."

If they are right wing, chances are very, very good that they weren't going to vote for him anyway since he is pro-choice. How many right wing Christian evangelicals could Obama have expected to have gotten the votes of prior to coming out in favor of gay marriage, exactly? Three? Four? Maybe as many as Fifteen?

No clue off the top of my head. I've never thought to check. Why do you ask?

Just because you can in the US, I find this quite funny.

Apparently you can in the UK and 90% of cousin marriages are either the royal family or muslim.

You probably shouldn't write things like that on the internet, Harthan. The oppressors can see it.

;) See? Winky face. I'm using levity, not expressing a belief. I swear!

Who someone sleeps with and wants to be with is their business not mine. If 2 guys want to get married there's nothing wrong with that. Good on them for doing what makes them happy.

Glad to see that I didn't even have to get to page 2 (40 posts per) to see people trying to proof-text Scriptures. Different cultures, different communities, different writing styles than we have in modernity that can cause misinterpretation.

Same-sex marriage as far as the United States of America is concerned should have nothing to do with matters of biblical authority, anyway.

It took 4 posts for the first passage to get quoted, Ricky.

Royalty has always been notoriously incestuous. Mainly because the marriages were political in nature and thus eventually all the most powerful people ended up related to the reigning monarch somehow. Most epicly demonstrated by the family squabble that was World War I.

Agreed with Steamboat here, its a political arguement, religion should be left in the home. Legalizing gay marriage does not mean YOU have to go get married to a guy, it affects nobody but the individual seeking marriage and sounds to me like a pretty basic 'in' for human rights... But who knows these days!

Judging from the comments i'm seeing on news relating to CM Punk and his stance, however, there are some strongly minded people against my opinion (and that of others) and if it can lead people to proclaim "they should have 'booed' his pro-gay ass" (fruedian slip i'm sure) and now dislike punk, then i'm sure it could easily effect obama's political run... Though i couldnt say which way.

lol what?? I thought everyone (other then annoying religious bastards (NOT TALKING ABOUT ALL OF THEM SOME ARE COOL WITH GAY MARRIAGE, JUST EVERYONE ELSE), rednecks, and old people) were all good for gay marriage now a days?? this is hardly news, in a perfect world there wouldn't be such rude people about going on about who can love who. We should really be worrying about those fucking gingers..... soulless children ;P, lol i only joke (don't care about the color of ones skin, just means you got more cultural then this white kid ever will). The only thing we should judge anyone on is what/how a person acts/says that is the true measure of a person, not his crap about who is homosexual and who is straight..... not going to vote for obama just because he is all for the rights of homosexuals..... just don't want another george busch in office XP.

Now on another serious note christians (and other religious people) can take their anti-homosexual beliefs (those who consider homosexuality as a sin), and shove it up their ignorant ass'. Yup i went there, hate me, go for it, just prove me right ;).

I'm not going to comment on all of this, but we're going to get criticisms from the religious right saying that this harms the sanctity of marriage. I'm a Christian and have been my entire life, and I find this argument completely laughable. We live in a country where you can get a quickie divorce then go through a drive through in Las Vegas, pay $40 and be married by a "minister" Elvis impersonator. My father has been married five times and has cheated on at least four of his wives. According to the religious right though, he's done far more to protect marriage than two men or two women that have been faithful to each other for 30 years. If you want to argue against gay marriage for whatever religious reason you want, go ahead but don't even bother with the sanctity argument. Heterosexual marriage hasn't meant a thing in this country in years.

To derail the subject a bit, for those interested in seeing what its like to follow the Bible word for word as its written, there is a book.

The Year of Living Biblically by A.J. Jacobs

Its a pretty good read and it doesn't set out to mock or make fun in anyway. Just the author living a year of his life following the 700+ rules and guidelines laid out in the Bible

As far as my opinion, I feel pretty similar to what KB said. People get up and preach about how gay marriage ruins the sanctity of marriage, yet the divorce rate hovers around 50%, you can get quickey married in Vegas, and more than one politician who goes on and on about it has been found having affairs. Hell a handful have been found having gay affairs

Really, their stances on Gay Marriage and Abortion are what make them right wing. That's my point.

Yeah but you were making it sound like he actually lost votes from that group. I am saying those right wing christians weren't going to vote for Obama regardless of his position on gay marriage anyway. They already weren't voting for him back when he was still opposed to it. His statement today didn't really change their mind at all.

Oh, must be an election year. Go get that gay vote Obama! All it is is bullshit politics. I agree with Obama on it, but see it for what it really is.
