I actually doubt that Obama's position on gay marriage is really going to be all that big of an issue.

No dude, there are plenty of right-wing Christians who will base their vote solely on someone's stance on Abortion and Gay Marriage. That is a fact.

It goes both ways too, though. My biggest gripe about the gay community is that they only care about their own. There's no doubt most of them will vote solely based on someone's stance on Gay Marriage as well. And that's wrong. It's far from being the most important issue, including to those who are gay.

I don't get why you don't just take the British route with it. Legalise gay marriage but call it something else like "civil partnership".

As any gay rights campaigner would tell you, gay marriages and civil partnerships are not the same thing. It's a shame that Cameron and Clegg have shat the bed on that score, but they're doing a spectacularly good job of pleasing nobody, so why change things? Wouldn't want the elderly homophobes on the backbenches to have their feathers ruffled!

I maintain that this election will be won or lost in June, when the Supreme Court issues it's ruling on Obamacare, either giving Obama his biggest success or his biggest embarrassment. If Supreme Court rules in his favor, no way he loses. If the Supreme Court rules against, no way he gets re-elected.

Personally, I think that as US elections seem to be won and lost by swing-voters, Obama will win easily by emphasising "Osama Bin Laden is Dead; General Motors is not."

If they are right wing, chances are very, very good that they weren't going to vote for him anyway since he is pro-choice. Royalty has always been notoriously incestuous. Mainly because the marriages were political in nature and thus eventually all the most powerful people ended up related to the reigning monarch somehow. Most epicly demonstrated by the family squabble that was World War I.

Agreed with Steamboat here, its a political arguement, religion should be left in the home. Legalizing gay marriage does not mean YOU have to go get married to a guy, it affects nobody but the individual seeking marriage and sounds to me like a pretty basic 'in' for human rights... But who knows these days!

Judging from the comments i'm seeing on news relating to CM Punk and his stance, however, there are some strongly minded people against my opinion (and that of others) and if it can lead people to proclaim "they should have 'booed' his pro-gay ass" (fruedian slip i'm sure) and now dislike punk, then i'm sure it could easily effect obama's political run... Though i couldnt say which way.

I'm not going to comment on all of this, but we're going to get criticisms from the religious right saying that this harms the sanctity of marriage. I'm a Christian and have been my entire life, and I find this argument completely laughable. We live in a country where you can get a quickie divorce then go through a drive through in Las Vegas, pay $40 and be married by a "minister" Elvis impersonator. My father has been married five times and has cheated on at least four of his wives. According to the religious right though, he's done far more to protect marriage than two men or two women that have been faithful to each other for 30 years. If you want to argue against gay marriage for whatever religious reason you want, go ahead but don't even bother with the sanctity argument. Heterosexual marriage hasn't meant a thing in this country in years.

As far as my opinion, I feel pretty similar to what KB said. People get up and preach about how gay marriage ruins the sanctity of marriage, yet the divorce rate hovers around 50%, you can get quickey married in Vegas, and more than one politician who goes on and on about it has been found having affairs. Hell a handful have been found having gay affairs
