NxT TakeOver Dallas

I'd say Aries not hitting Corbin with a brainbuster was a missed opportunity if it weren't so obvious this isn't their final encounter.

Corbin is the shit, but they weren't going to job out Aries in his debut.

I expect big things from the rematch.

For all the text dedicated to the Zayn/Nakamura match, I wasn't actually surprised by how it unfolded, and Aries versus Corbin was my biggest disappointment. I had it down as a dark horse for match of the night. In the end, it was just... functional.

What Sam and I are saying is that the match was good, but the only reason the crowd were wild is because they knew which spots were coming. They were proactive not reactive. Unlike, say, the way they were during three title matches.

I don't have any problem with that in his debut. The crowd popping for the spots made them seem like a big deal, and that excitement will hopefully carry over to new fans once he's a bit more established on the roster.

With America Alpha, Nak, and the main events sure to be hits with the crowd, there needed to be down points for the live audience. Aries was unfortunately that point.

They'll crush it as a Full Sail main event.

I thought the Aries/Corbin match was great, but I'll admit that I am possibly the world's biggest Austin Aries mark.

I'm not necessarily on board with the first paragraph (Sam vs. Accepted Wrestling Wisdom) but that second one is staggering in how correct it is.

Similarly, I know I got more mileage than most as a Corbin fan.

But I could almost feel the match underwhelming while it was occurring.

Good. But I think everyone knows there's more to be offered there.

1997 is the only Bret year worth writing home about. Not new news.

Or do these young boys need educating?

This discussion on Bret and Piper has revealed my startling need for ownership of a Bret Hart DVD set of some kind.

Just rewatching Nakamura's entrance and, while Tasty is correct to criticise his rhythm, it is absolutely incredible.

SHINSUKE
NAKAMURA

While I stand by what I said earlier, I'm finding it much more enjoyable now that my expectations are in check.

Remember when people were like "oh they may repackage him the American audience won't be familiar with him"

I thought they might lose Shinsuke as it's pronunciation doesn't match the spelling, but I think Samoa Joe shows they're past rebranding. There's no point in defending intellectual property when you have no competitors. They seemed to get that in the early 2000s, but then Braden Walker and Scotty Goldman et al showed up.

I can't emphasise enough how horrifying that fucking crying baby face thing that Asuka was wearing was. If anybody has a picture of it...

I'm gonna throw my hat in the ring of Corbin enthusiasts.

Admittedly I only watch the TakeOver events so I have no idea how he is week-to-week but every time I see him he impresses me more and more. He looked very composed and assured which hasn't always been the case but he just strikes me as someone who is now quite confident in his abilities.

Probably need to watch the tag match again to be honest to absorb the last few minutes properly but that Gable dude was impressive, Jordan less so.

Nakamura looked like a bit of a nonce in his video package and stop-motion strut to the ring but he can evidently take a punch/forearm as well as give them out but I never like seeing one of my ginger brethren sad so boo to him.

Asuka and Bayley was my match of the night. Asuka is one of those women I can easily imagine would beat me up if she so needed to but I'd probably enjoy it in a "my lord she's gorgeous but she's going to snap my limbs if I don't stop gazing lustfully at her" kind of way.

The blood stoppages kept taking me out of the Joe-Balor match but it was fine for what it was. Give me Joe and AJ in WWE and I'll die slightly less miserable.

Can't find it. Did find this.
