The best possibility, and the one I think the referees were discussing, is to throw a pass and leave it incomplete. You get the turnover on downs, but back at the line of scrimmage and not the 2 yard line.

Yes you do, but I'd think it would be better to give up the two instead of putting them in prime position for three or seven. Make them work for the extra points. They get the ball back in either scenario.

As I type this, the Patriots pick it off, which isn't likely to happen if the Colts were just trying to run it up the middle for a score.

I was thinking the same thing on the last part, though I'm not sure if he fumbled or was trying to throw it forward.

Colston deserves no blame whatsoever. It was a designed play... he was doing what was written up. Besides, if it wasn't for Colston, we wouldn't have even been in the game to begin with. He made nearly every big catch the Saints had today, and was the one who recovered the onside kick. Terry Bradshaw burial of him just now really fucking pissed me off. The Twitter reaction is just as ******ed as well.

Anyway, the Saints fought to the very end. They played like shit and Payton called an AWFUL game, but they still somehow managed to have a chance at the end. I'm still very proud of this team and I look forward to next year.

My guess is that he probably forgot how much time wass on the clock which is inexcusable given the circumstance. I'm not going to put the loss entirely on him. The defense was pretty damn good. If they were trying to run a lateral play he should have been throwing the ball to someone behind him to keep the play running.
Even if Stills was out of position Colston could clearly see he would have to throw the ball forward. He should have readjusted and lateraled it to someone behind him.

I know that's easy for me to say because I wasn't the one scrambling around trying to make something happen in a high pressure situation but it was still a bad choice.

I would accept the theory though that he thought all the time had run off the clock so he didn't go out of bounds.

Cadet (not Stills, my bad) wasn't where he was supposed to be and Colston had to make a play before he got hit, thinking there was no time left on the clock.

It was definitely a bad throw, but the playcall was worse, which is why Colston doesn't deserve the blame here.

Besides, the chances of the Saints actually scoring on the next play had Colston stepped out of bounds, getting the 2pt Conversion, and then winning in overtime was EXTREMELY unlikely, to say the least. The only reason we were in that game outside of the defense's awesome performance was because of Colston. He and Robinson were the only two guys to show up for the Saints offense today. 11 REC 144YDs 1TD was Colston's stat line, not to mention him being the person who recovered the onside kick. He was easily the MVP of the game besides Marshawn Lynch, and one play doesn't change that.

Colston is the BY FAR the greatest Wide Receiver in Saints history and perhaps even my personal all time favorite player, and it just kills me to see him getting so criticized for something that wasn't his fault.

I'm going to disagree with that slightly. Colston panicked when he got the ball. He obviously threw the ball forward, which he should not have done, regardless of to whom he was supposed to throw the ball. He had time to evaluate the situation, but he knew the clock was running low and likely thought he was about to be tackled. He did not seem aware of the fact he had more time (on the clock and from being tackled. Sorry, jmt, but he threw it FIVE YARDS forward. He deserves some blame.

He's the one that threw a forward pass, how is that not his fault? The guy has been playing football at some level for the better part of his life, at no level is it ok for the WR to catch the ball down field an throw it forward, the dude obviously panicked & made a mistake.

I'm still impressed by how LeGarrette Blount has turned into Corey Dillon circa 2004. What's even more impressive is that this will be Brady and Belichick's 8th AFC title game in 13 years.

Colston is a great player, but he had a brainfart on that play. He had to have known the time situation but he panicked and threw that pass. Hard to blame him for the loss. The Saints had horrible clock management before that and Payton kept on calling for screen plays to RBs when they had failed all game.

I get what you're saying. I understand the pass was awful, but the playcall was even worse and that's where the blame should lie. And you guys know I ADORE Sean Payton, but that was him getting too cute at the worst time. It's not the first time it's happened this season.
