As final project for the bachelor degree course computer science at the FH Trier a system that enables robots equipped with 3D cameras to identify objects placed in front of it was developed.
An object of a certain type is positioned in front of the robot and a range image of the scene is taken. The created image is corrected and restricted to parts regarding the object. Afterwards, features are extracted from the range information and evaluated to identify the type of the object.
Two types of cameras are applied for working with the robots: TOF and stereo camera. In this paper these types are compared and differences concerning functionality, access, creation of range images and quality of received images are eloborated. Additionally, the developed software RoboRecognition is documentated.
