Movie Roundtable

Shallow Hall > L.A. Confidential

L.A. Confidential might be the best neo-noir movie out there. Set in the early 1950s, this film depicts a world where cops attempt to do their jobs by any means necessary, and this often sees them use less than reputable means. Other cops are totally dirty and are abusing their power to make themselves rich and powerful. However, one cop, Private Exley, is determined to play by the rules to become one of the best officers the city has ever seen.

The movie is full of twists, turns, redemption, betrayal, anything and everything a good noir movie should have. It also has an all-star cast, starring Guy Pearce, Russell Crowe, Kevin Spacey, Danny DeVito, Kim Basinger, and James Cromwel. It's an extremely well made film with an amazing sound track and wonderful cinematography. This is one of my favorite films, almost definitely in my top 10.

L.A Confidental> Lion King

Another classic. This I think is the best Disney movie there has ever been made. This story is a true heart warmer and a great tale. This may have some of the best characters ever made in a Disney movie and I think it goes down as a story that must be told and retold through generations. I love this movie and I remember the countless days of watching it over and over again. It also may be the most remembered movie in all Disney movies and has probaly he most recited lines in all Disney history.

Lion King>Grandma's Boy

Pretty funny stoner flick right here. It's pretty much Adam Sandler's back up stars finally getting their chance to stand out, and I believe they did a pretty good job. Nick Swardson was hilarious in this. I've always enjoyed his quirky brand of humor and he comes across very funny in here. The only surprising part was how weak of an impact Jonah Hill had in the film. He's usually much funnier than this. But other than that, very solid comedy.

Grandma's Boy > You've Got Mail

Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan reunite in 1998 for You've Got Mail after their amazing turn in Sleepless in Seattle. Playing two business rivals who hate each other in real life, but fall in love over the Internet, this movie is beyond cheesy. Somehow they go from being business rivals to Meg Ryan wishing Tom Hanks would be the stranger she met over the Internet, despite the fact that his chain of "Major" book stores are putting ones like hers out of business. But he's a nice guy and all, so her livelihood becomes secondary in these situation.

This plot was so contrived and silly in that somehow the man Meg Ryan fell for online turns out to be the man in Tom Hanks whom she's organizing a protest against his book store, and gets to know him in real life at the same time. Im all for suspending disbelief, or I wouldnt be a wrestling fan. But this was just too much. My girlfriend dragged me along Junior year in high school, and while it had its funny moments, I was busy trying to cross as many bases as I could in the near empty theatre then I was in the movie. Im all for a romantic comedy now and then, and I loved 1993's Sleepless in Seattle, starring them both. But this movie was just awful, contrived as heck, and pushed me past my ability to suspend disbelief.

You've Got Mail>Lost & Found

This was their attempt at finding a new fat guy to star alongside David Spade after the passing of Chris Farley. Their answer: Artie Lange. Now I know this might not be a popular opinion, but I believe that Artie Lange is much funnier than Chris Farley. I've always liked comedians who use their witty and creative thinking skills to relay comedy as opposed to some who relies heavily on physical comedy, of which Chris Farley is the poster boy. Having said that, Tommy Boy and Black Sheep are both leaps and fucking bounds better than Lost & Found. Artie was way out of his comfort zone just playing the complete oaf with no real lines of significance and while Spade had some funny lines here and there, he really just suffered from not having Farley to bounce off of. I'd give this movie a big ol' pass.

Lost & Found > Due Date

How entertaining is this movie?? Robert & Zach made an awesome movie...
I especially enjoyed the part where Robert a.k.a "Peter" told Zach a.k.a "Ethan" about his father and after that emotional scene, Ethan starts laughing about him!!
How good was that??
Zach is becoming one of the must see comedy actors of this generation !!

Due Date > Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind

You wouldn't know it, but Eternal Sunshine is a film about the futility of the human condition. Deep shit right? But it's still an extremely accessible film. Jim Carey gives up his normal comedy role and takes in a darker, more serious role of a recently broken up guy who wants to forget that his past relationship ever happened. Lucky for him, there is a company that specializes in that exact thing.

This surreal film is beautifully edited as it transitions from scenes in dreams with the utmost grace. There are scenes where Jim Carey will be in a bookstore and he walks straight from the bookstore into an entirely new setting without the camera so much as cutting away. It's absolutely incredible.

This film may not be for everyone, but it's a beautiful dark romance that tackles such issues as loneliness, love, relationships, the human condition, dreams, and much more.

Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind<Die Hard

Launching Bruce Willis' movie career this is one of the best action flicks if not the best of the 80's. Set in a highrise building in LA, this movie has a great story and better action. Definately the best of the quadrilogy.

Die Hard> DareDevil

I think I once listed this movie in the greatest action movies of all time. Seriously though this is one good MARVEL movie with tons of twits and turns all through out it. The stroyline of the movie is by far the most interesting thing of it as throughout the story we have good guys turning bad, bad guys turning good. Also it features the song Bring Me To Life which was a personal favorite of mine some years ago. Overall it is a very good action film with a lot of good acting. Also the spin-off movie Elektra is also a movie you should watch.

DareDevil>Lost in Translation

One of my favourite films. Lost in Translation shows you don't need an endless list of characters to work a truly wonderful film. Billy Murray and Scarlett Johansson do a great job holding the film with fantastic acting and good chemistry. Murray is by far the star and he's treated like such. He also should've won the Oscar, but that's another debate for another day. Johansson's still pretty small time when she does this and it's here where she becomes a star. The ending is so bitter-sweet. You have to love it.

Lost In Translation>Not Another Teen Movie

Of all of the lame ass spoof films to come out over the past decade, this is the only one that I found o be even remotely enjoyable. I don't think it had anything to do with the actual movie as much as it's just because I despise the Teen Comedy genre and I get a kick out of watching them get shit on. She's All That, Never Been Kissed and all of the other countless shit movies they have got absolutely trashed and this film and I loved it.

For someone who actually likes those kind of flicks, just go ahead and pass as you'll likely just find it to be rather juvenile.

Not Another Teen Movie> Elecktra

I'm stuck on superhero movies today. This movie was okay. I think that it didn't see all too well thought out however the entire production of it was done well enough for me to appreciate the overall production. I think that the bad guys in this movie are truly bad guys however the reason behind them all blowing up and turning green is beyond me. Overall I give this movie a 6/10 however if you ever need a superhero/chick movie to watch here you go.

Elektra<American Outlaws

Western style flick following the lives of the James Gang. Although mostly fiction it is a great take on Jesse James an how crazy he was. Starring Colin Farrell long before he fell apart I feel it was one of his best portrayals, and im a stickler for anything related to the James Gang especially Jesse.

American Outlaws > Sin City

I've already pushed the hell out of Sin City, but you HAVE TO SEE THIS MOVIE! Three stories told separately, but all extremely compelling. The black and white visuals are amazing, and the acting is phenomenal. If you're in the mood for a GREAT action movie with a very dark side to it, you need to pick up Sin City.

Sin City>You Don't Mess With The Zohan

For me, this was a great movie b/c everything about it screamed "ridiculous." The Zohan character was pretty funny and Sandler seemed to nail to Israeli accent. There was a lot of emphasis on his junk region in the film and it poked fun at middle eastern body hair...funny!

The fact that they had a Palestine/Israel hacky sack contest had me cracking up...we have to be able to laugh at shit in the world, and this proved to be good social commentary.

Overall, worth watching for some cheap laughs.

You Don't Mess With The Zohan > Next Three Days, The

I went to see this movie at the end of it's cinema run and I really enjoyed it. Usually, I don't buy Elizabeth Banks in anything other than a comedy role but she really put the boot into that typecast and showed me what I was talking about. Not only is she amazing in this movie, Russell Crowe is brilliant as well. I haven't seen a Crowe movie that I liked since Gladiator but this one really struck a nerve with me. I honestly thought that it was one of the best movies I have seen this year and that is saying a lot, to be fair. I think that everyone should see this movie, simply because of Banks' performance, it is quite something.

The Next Three Days>Stand By Me

This is one of my favorite movies of all time and is based upon the work of Stephen King. Corey Feldman, River Phoenix, Jerry O'Connel, & Wil Wheaton were really believable as friends. The movie was very insightful and gave great perspective about growing up and moving on.

I always remember the line "Chomper, sick balls" and the story about Davy Hogan and the pie eating contest. The blueberry vomit still makes me cringe.

Stand By Me>Eragon

This is honestly a sub-par movie.. The book was far greater then the movie in this case and I think the acting was just okay. The battle scene really didn't do all that much for me and I actually was quite disappointed in this movie. I am rather gald that there will be no sequel because of the disappointment this movie was to me. I really had high hopes for it and it totally let me down.

Eragon>National Treasure

This is a great movie. I really get a kick out of conspiracy type movies, especially when it involves secret societies like the Knights Templar and the Freemasons. It was really cool how they incorporated US history into the plot with historic places & documents.

No one has played in a while, so I'll try to get it going again.

National Treasure>Earth Girls Are Easy

For a cheesy 80's movie, this film had some really great people in it. Jeff Goldblum, Geena Davis, Damon Wayans, and let us not forget Jim Carey. The were a lot of laugh, and Geena Davis was pretty hot back then.

Young Guns>Step Brothers

This is currently my movie of choice. I laugh from beginning to end, and there are so many lines that I use every day. I just put it on my i pod so I can watch it on the stair stepper at the gym.

"Robert better not get in my face...cause I'll drop that mother fucker."

Step Brothers>Seven Samurai

I've gone on about this film in other threads, but for dam good reasons. The story is simple, the characters are all entertaining and the direction is first class. Honestly if anyone has a spare 3 hours one lazy afternoon, check it out and don't be put off by the fact it's foreign, long and black and white. You won't be disappointed!

Seven Samurai>Innerspace

This movie was released in 1987 and is one of my favorite all time films. Dennnis Quaid, Martin Short, and Meg Ryan all had great roles and the plot was very cool. It ties a bit of humor in with a bit of action.

Looking back, it was a pretty cool Sci-Fi flick. Who wouldn't want to be shrunk and injected into Martin Short?

Innerspace>Excalibur

You know those films that despite the dialogue being clunkier than the armour and the accents just being a bitty queer (in the non-gay sense) you still love? Excalibur is one of those for me. I remember watching this when I was younger and just the look and sound of the film had me hooked, from the green lighting, to the contrasting silver/dark suits of armour, to the sound of clanging metal, these things all stood out. The final fight in the fog is still one of my favourites of all time.
