Mentally Challenged

After watching Summerslam 2004, and some storylines from that timeline, it's come to my attention that Eugene was massively over.. but I still to this day, truly fail to understand why. In the end, he wasn't that talented. (Even if the mentally challenged character was a work) And when all was said and done, he didn't even win any Championships. (to my knowledge)

Yet in the end, the fans took quickly to him. I mean, massively to him, the same way they took to Steve Austin, and even Hulk Hogan. Now before I get hugely blasted, I'm not comparing Eugene to either of those individuals, but he got massive pop from the fans, each time he came out during 2004.. similar to the huge pops Steve Austin and Hulk Hogan have received. WHY!?

Do Wrestling fans love incredibly stupid gimmicks? Did everyone that year group together and say among themselves "Hey, let's randomly cheer the fuck outta some random loser who should never even remotely be considered worth a damn!" I think it's possible.

So on that note, I ask this question. And the whole purpose of this thread, is to ask this question.

Does the W.W.E need to bring in another "******/Mentally Challenged" Character?

Personally, I don't think it'd work like Eugene worked because Eric Bischoff helped Eugene get over. Along with the likes of The Rock, Triple H., Evolution, and Chris Benoit. All of which were huge during that time. But to say they shouldn't is a bit much as well.. considering how great it went over initially when they never likely considered it'd hit off that greatly.

So, I ask again.. Does the W.W.E need to bring in another "******/Mentally Challenged" Character? Please explain yourself and add detail to why you feel the way you do. Thank you.

I loved the gimmick. Everybody loves a ******. There have been plenty of stupid gimmicks over the years. If WWE was clever this could have been a subtle spoof of them. I was really looking forward to the day when Eugene revealed that he wasn't really a mong. Shame it never happened.

But there's no need to do the gimmick again. Eugene is still fresh to a lot of people. I say leave the memories alone. Or just bring him back. vs. Chris Jericho at WrestleMania, preferably.

I was awaiting that moment as well. I was hoping for a huge heel push for Eugene, but somehow they would've had to give him his own moveset and the whole 9 yds.

I think the greatest thing, would've been instead of using the Stunner, Rock Bottom & Leg Drop.. as a heel, He could've used the Rude Awakening, Million Dollar Dream and Shake, Rattle & Roll. Or another famous heel finisher.

I also agree that everyone loves a ******. And look at it this way, Eugene actually got William Regal over. So he was truly doing more than just a small service.

Actually, Festus doesn't look all that bright to me either, so that gimmick is still alive it seems, but I think they went full ****** on Festus, and to quote Kirk Lazarous.

Check it out. Dustin Hoffman, 'Rain Man,' look ******ed, act ******ed, not ******ed. Counted toothpicks, cheated cards. Autistic, sho'. Not ******ed. You know Tom Hanks, 'Forrest Gump.' Slow, yes. ******ed, maybe. Braces on his legs. But he charmed the pants off Nixon and won a ping-pong competition. That ain't ******ed. Peter Sellers, "Being There." Infantile, yes. ******ed, no. You went full ******, man. Never go full ******. You don't buy that? Ask Sean Penn, 2001, "I Am Sam." Remember? Went full ******, went home empty handed...

personally i think that if WWE needs to stoop to a level to have a "Mental" charactre get them their pops and rating it is just pathetic! i think the Eugene character was one of the stupidest moves for WWE to take, (btw Eugene did win the World Tag Team Championship) but seriously, WWE and WWF is supposed to be something you watch and go "woah!!!" or "wow!!!" those reactions make rating, not "awwww its a mental guy trying to wrestle, let him win" it is pathetic!!!!! WWE needs more Randy Orton's and Triple H's and John Cena's and HBK's, those guys are where the rating are, not a Eugene character

As with Jake and Will I was also awaiting the occasion that Eugene turned around and told us that were were the stupid ones and he was just acting the entire time. A heel run for him would of been good and perhaps might of shown if Dinsmore had any talent or not.

I like Will's idea of him changing his moves from the popular face moves to those used by heels.

As for whether we need another ******ed or mentally chalenged gimmick, I wouldnt of thought so at least not this soon after Eugene perhaps in another few years. Some will say that perhaps Festus is a similaar gimmick, to me his is a gimmick of 'see what happens when brothers and sisters have sex.'

Reading this board, I see a constant clamor for new ideas. Eugene was a new idea.

Nick Dinsmore played his role well. He clapped his hands, jumped around the ring.....and made himself a sympathetic character whom the fans took to. Sometimes, he showed some decent wrestling ability. Once in a while, he got angry enough to keep the fans wondering what might be coming next.

When the gimmick wore thin, the company got rid of him rather than forcing him down our throats.

Eugene was the essence of a successful character whose act ran it's course. I don't think the company will be repeating it for a long time, if ever.

Well to answer your first question. I think the reason why the fans took a huge liking to Eugene was because of his gimmick of being mentally challenged. In today's society its common to feel bad, and sympathize with those who have some sort of metal disability. So seeing one such as Eugene attempt to be a wrestler even though hes handicapped, won the crowd over i assume.

Now do we need another mentally challenged character in the WWE? Why not? I really wouldn't want one. Since i don't really care for the character type, but i can see one working in the current WWE. Mostly for prop purposes for like the Dirt Sheet or something, and a possible feud with Santino. Hell the character can maybe even have a title run? If they gave one to Santino, it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility.
